No this is not another story about Sarah Robles my top female weightlifter. ?I had another former Division I female thrower come to me wanting to make the transition from Throwing to Weightlifting. ?When an opportunity like this comes up you jump on it. ?I have always said in order to be successful in Weightlifting in America we have to do a better job of talent identifying athletes. ?We don?t have the infrastructure and organizational support that many of our foreign competitors have. ?Government support, state, regional, and national sports schools, and a national talent identification classification system is non existent here in America. ?What we have done is home grow our athletes or attract athletes from already sports. ?We can?t simply really on developing athletes from the Youth System up. ?We just don?t have the numbers. ?Many of our more successful weightlifters have come from other sports backgrounds anyway. ?Tara Nott-Cunningham came from I believe Soccer & Gymnastics. ?Melanie Roach Gymnastics, Robin Bird-Goad Gymnastics, Carissa Gump Track, Kara Heads Throwing, Holley Mangold Football & Throwing, Chioma Amichi Throwing, and Sarah Robles Throwing. ? I have always stated we must pursue certain sports in hopes of finding the next great talent. ?For women the sports that I would look into are Gymnastics, Track & Field (Especially the Field Events), Softball, and Volleyball. ?The one down fall in many cases is that these women come into weightlifting at the end of their careers after a long career. ?Many times the window for success in Weightlifting is limited do to time allotted for new skill acquisition and age. ?Also prior injuries from their primary sport can hamper their success in Weightlifting. ? If we can transition them early enough as I was able to do with Sarah Robles (She crossed over at 19) we could see greater results in Olympic Weightlifting (Sarah is a 3x National Champion & 3 World Team Member in 4 years of crossing over). ?We must not be afraid to go after these high caliber athletes.
So once I was contacted by this girl with the Throwing background I jumped on the opportunity to work with her. ?Like most Throwers she was never been taught the nuances of the Olympic Lifts. ?It seems to me that all Throwers are only taught the Power Versions of the Olympic Lifts. Power Snatch and Power Clean with many only learning the Power Clean. ?It is rare that they are even taught the Full Lifts/Classic Lifts and if so there is a major gap between the two versions both in weight lifted and technique. ?In all of these cases I never blame the athletes but blame the Coaches whom are failing to teach these athletes the differences between the two and how proper technique is administered. ?What is always appealing to me with these times of athletes is the raw Power that they posses. ?This girl is strong and powerful. ?It is my job now to teach her how to lift and for her to use that base of strength and power training that she has accumulated over the years from Throwing. ?I?m not one for predictions but if she sticks with it she has a shot a being great. ?I will update this website on her progress from week to week. ?For now take care.
