After its untimely demise, WebOS showed some resilience by coming back in open source form and popping up in various devices hither and yon. On the vanguard of that resurrection is Phoenix International Communications, a team of volunteers who've managed to port the orphaned OS to a Samsung Nexus S device, running as an app inside Android. So far, the reborn OS app is displaying decidedly zombie-like slowness, but it's still an early pre-alpha build. If all goes well, you might one day be able to seamlessly switch between WebOS and Android without rebooting, letting you run apps from both systems. So, if you've been carrying a torch for the fallen system, check the video after the break.
In this July 6, 2011, file photo, President Barack Obama sits in front of a screen displaying a question he tweeted??Looking for leverage in "fiscal cliff" talks with Republicans, President Barack Obama on Wednesday was to host middle-class Americans whose taxes risk going up January 1 then retreat behind closed doors for talks with top corporate executives. The White House also worked to enlist support on Twitter, highlighting a hashtag, #My2K, for tweets about the standoff.
Obama planned to deliver a speech at 11:35 a.m. to press Congress to extend Bush-era tax cuts on income up to $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for families ? surrounded by Americans who stand to be affected when those reductions expire January 1.
The White House says that "a typical middle class family of four" would pay Uncle Sam an additional $2,200 unless those tax cuts are extended. Obama campaigned for reelection in large part on the argument that tax cuts that chiefly benefit the richest Americans? must expire in order to save popular government programs that face the axe. Republicans argue that will reduce investments that generate jobs at a time when the economy is still sputtering, with unemployment stubbornly high. The GOP has signaled it would be willing to consider boosting tax revenues as long as Democrats agree to overhaul popular entitlement programs like Medicare or Medicaid.
That $2,200 figure is the inspiration for #My2K, part of what the White House describes as an "online push" behind the president's approach. Obama has highlighted Twitter hashtags in past disputes with Republicans: #40dollars in the fight over the payroll tax holiday and #dontdoublemyrate in a feud over student loans.
The president, who spoke to top Republican and Democratic leaders over the weekend, was to make brief public remarks at the top of a meeting with his cabinet at 3 pm before huddling with senior executives from major American corporations.
Here is the list of attendees, as provided by the White House:
Frank Blake, Chairman and CEO, The Home Depot
Lloyd Blankfein, Chairman and CEO, Goldman Sachs Group
Joe Echeverria, CEO, Deloitte LLP
Ken Frazier, President and CEO, Merck and Co.
Muhtar Kent, Chairman and CEO, Coca Cola
Terry Lundgren, Chairman, President, and CEO, Macy's Inc.
Marissa Mayer, CEO and President, Yahoo!
Douglas Oberhelman, Chairman and CEO, Caterpillar
Ian Read, Chairman and CEO, Pfizer
Brian Roberts, Chairman and CEO, Comcast
Ed Rust, Chairman and CEO, State Farm Insurance Co.
Arne Sorenson, President and CEO, Marriott
Randall Stephenson, Chairman and CEO, AT&T
Patricia Woertz, President and CEO, Archer Daniels Midland
The "fiscal cliff" refers to an economically painful set of tax hikes and deep spending cuts that come into effect January 1 unless Congress and the president reach a deal.

Corporate wrongdoers should stick to the facts in post-crisis messagePublic release date: 26-Nov-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

When faced with scandal or wrongdoing, corporations should stick to the facts in their post-crisis messaging, according to a new study from researchers at Rice University, the University of Georgia and the University of Maryland College Park.
The study, "Managing the message: The effects of firm actions and industry spillovers on media coverage following wrongdoing," examined quarterly media coverage of 45 U.S. public toy companies a 10-year period and over 5,500 press releases generated by the companies during that time.
Almost half of the companies surveyed conducted a toy recall (for a total of 56 million toys associated with thousands of reported injuries or incidents) during the study period. Those recalls were indications of a firm's "wrongdoing," defined as behaviors that placed stakeholders at risk or violated consumer expectations for standards of conduct.
The research revealed that the worse a company's "wrongdoing," the more damaging media coverage it received. It also showed a spillover effect: Many of the companies that were not associated with toy recalls suffered from negative media backlash aimed at the entire industry, making them "guilty by association."
But the key to managing the crisis is different depending on whether a corporation was directly to blame or "guilty by association," according to lead study author Anastasiya Zavyalova, assistant professor of strategic management in Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Business.
"If your corporation is directly to blame, it's best to stick to the facts," Zavyalova said. "A media strategy that shares substantive information about how you're planning to address the problem can help change the tone of the media coverage."
However, for companies that are "guilty by association," it's better to have communication that takes attention away from the scandal and puts the focus on how the corporation differs from others in the industry. These ceremonial press releases included information about company plans such as starting a foundation, engaging in a charity event, etc.
"For companies not directly to blame that have suffered negative press, this type of communication helps shift attention from the media backlash," Zavyalova said.
Zavyalova noted that during times when more than one company was conducting a recall, media coverage was somewhat less negative for individual wrongdoing firms.
"It goes to show that there is some 'safety in numbers,'" she said.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The head of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Mary Schapiro, announced on Monday that she would step down from the agency on December 14.
SEC Commissioner Elisse Walter will be designated to succeed Schapiro upon her departure, the White House said in a statement.
"The SEC is stronger, and our financial system is safer and better able to serve the American people - thanks in large part to Mary's hard work," President Barack Obama said.
Speculation had swirled for months that Schapiro would leave soon after the November presidential election. The announcement marks one of the first departures of Obama's financial regulation team in the aftermath of the election.
Schapiro led the SEC through a major overhaul in the wake of the financial crisis, as it bore the brunt of criticism for its oversight leading up to the crisis and for failing to catch now-convicted Ponzi schemers Bernard Madoff and Allen Stanford.
In the past two years, the agency has logged record enforcement actions, including 735 in the 2011 fiscal year and 734 in 2012, it said in a statement announcing Schapiro's departure.
The SEC has also been bogged down with major rules that the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial regulation law required it to write, many of which are still in process.
"I've been so amazed by how hard the men and women of the agency work each and every day and by the sacrifices they make to get the job done," Schapiro said in the statement.

HOUSTON (CBS Houston) ? Stop thinking that all porn actresses are ?damaged goods.?
A new study finds that female porn stars are more religious and have a higher self-esteem than other women.
The study, which was published in the Journal of Sex Research, concluded that these women do not fit the ?damaged goods hypothesis.?
?In terms of psychological characteristics, porn actresses had higher levels of self-esteem, positive feelings, social support, sexual satisfaction, and spirituality compared to the matched group,? the study titled ?Pornography Actresses: An Assessment of the Damaged Goods Hypothesis? concluded.
The study compared 177 porn actresses to a sample of women based on age, race and marital status.
According to the Toronto Sun, researchers shot down the ideas that women who work in porn came from broken families or hostile backgrounds.
The study also found that women working in porn tried more drugs, had their first sexual experience at a younger age and had more sexual partners than those in the sample group.
The study was conducted by Rresearchers from Texas Woman?s University, Shippensburg University and Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? The Atlanta Falcons stumbled into a hole, only to find a way to escape again.
Matt Ryan threw for 353 yards and overcame two critical turnovers by leading another late touchdown drive to rally the Falcons to a 24-23 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
Ryan teamed with Julio Jones on an 80-yard TD midway through the third quarter, but the NFC South leaders found themselves trailing 23-17 after the Bucs marched for a touchdown, then forced a fumble by Ryan to set up a field goal that put the Falcons in catchup mode with 10 minutes to go.
Michael Turner's 3-yard TD run put Atlanta ahead for good with 7:55 left. Connor Barth missed a 56-yard goal for Tampa Bay (6-5) in the closing minutes, and the Bucs' four-game winning streak ended when Josh Freeman's desperation pass fell incomplete in the end zone with no time remaining.
The win enabled the Falcons (10-1) to keep pace with Houston for the NFL's best record. Turner also scored a fourth-quarter TD that helped the Falcons overcome six turnovers to beat Arizona 23-19 last week.
Doug Martin scored on a pair of 1-yard run for the Bucs, however the rookie who began the day leading the NFL in total yards from scrimmage was limited to 50 yards rushing on 21 carries.
Barth kicked field goals of 22, 42, and 48 yards, the latter giving the Bucs their six-point lead after cornerback E.J. Biggers sacked Ryan to force a fumble. Ryan threw a second-quarter interception ? his sixth pick in two weeks ? that led to Barth's field goal that made it 10-10 at the half.
Ryan completed 26 of 32 passes, including four straight on the drive that Turner finished with his TD run. Jacquizz Rodgers had a 5-yard TD run in the first quarter, and Jones finished with six receptions for 147 yards despite playing on a sore right ankle that limited him in practice.
Ryan started the game with 10 straight completions before Ronde Barber's interception and 28-yard return to the Atlanta 31 led to Barth's first field goal.
The Falcons drove to the Tampa Bay 4 in the closing seconds of the half, but wasted an opportunity to regain the lead when Matt Bryant hooked a 22-yard field-goal attempt wide left as time expired. The Atlanta kicker missed a 48-yarder with 8 seconds left, giving the Bucs one more chance to pull out what would have been their first signature victory under first-year coach Greg Schiano.
Atlanta struck quickly after Barth's second field goal put Tampa Bay up 13-10. Ryan found Jones racing up the right sideline, and the receiver broke free from cornerback Leonard Johnson to continue into the end zone. The Bucs regained the lead when Martin scored his second TD on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Freeman finished 19 of 30 for 256 yards. Vincent Jackson had five catches for 96 yards.
Atlanta converted six of eight first downs and outgained the Bucs 239 yards to 105 in the opening half, yet it was 10-10 at the break because the Falcons settled for a field goal after holding the ball for more than seven minutes of its first scoring drive, Ryan's interception and Bryant's missed field goal.

Though you may be coming to the Orlando area to spend time at theme parks, you may also want to soak up some sun. If you don?t feel like driving an hour to the beaches and you want more privacy than a community pool at a hotel or condo offers, you can always rent a Disney pool home. With more than 26,000 rental vacation homes and condos to choose from, you will find a home suitable to every taste. Many of the available Disney homes offer private pools in screened lanais, and some even offer Jacuzzis. Whether traveling with just a spouse or friend, your kids or extended family, a Disney pool home provides the luxury of entertaining yourself without incurring additional costs.
Alone time with your spouse
Whether you?re on your honeymoon, second honeymoon, a weekend away or your first vacation together, you and your spouse can enjoy privacy in a Disney vacation home. Spend a day at a theme park and then drive back to your pool home for a romantic home-cooked dinner. After you eat, spend some time together under the Florida stars by taking a dip in the pool together.
Fun with friends
You may be meeting up with a friend whom you haven?t seen in a while or simply going on a Disney vacation with a friend that you see daily. If you want to be able to catch up and spend some time without the hassle of kids or random guests around, a vacation pool home would be perfect for you. You can watch the sun rise from your private lanai and patio area while talking over coffee and a light breakfast. Come back to your pool home to relax after a tiring day at Disney. And whether or not you?re in for the night, you?ll know that you can always come back and go for a swim when you want a break from spending money.
Splashing with the kids
Traveling with kids can be a wonderful time for creating memories. It can also sometimes be hard on parents. You may want to offer your kids ample playtime but find that a communal pool at a hotel can get pretty busy, especially on warm days. You may feel that your kids don?t have enough room to play or that it?s hard to keep an eye on them, as there are so many people crowded in the pool. With a Disney vacation home, you?ll have your very own pool for your kids to have for themselves. Save money by spending an entire day playing in the water, and have a cookout. Taking a day off from park hopping can save you hundreds of dollars. Even with a full vacation agenda, you can still use the pool in the evenings if your kids get a late-night energy burst but you are too tired to take them out to another attraction.
Family fun in the sun
A pool home can be fun for everyone in your family. After a day out at Disney, you may be looking to relax. You may also just want to have a place to call home even when you?re miles away from your own home. Grandma and grandpa may want to take an early-morning swim while you prepare breakfast for the kids to get your day going. If you have your siblings and their kids with you, you may want to save money by spending an evening in your vacation home and having a pool party.
Whether you?re looking for the privacy of having your own pool, a home away from home or an opportunity to save money, you?ll find it all in a Disney vacation home.
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Neighbors of the man charged with murdering three New York shopkeepers of Middle Eastern descent described him on Friday as a self-styled "tough guy" who affected a fake Italian accent and claimed to be retired detective.
"He was the kind of guy who you could tell had watched 'The Godfather' too many times,'' said Ben Elchonen, who lives in the same Queens apartment building where murder suspect Salvatore Perrone, 64, often stayed with a girlfriend.
Police say Perrone, an independent clothing salesman who is divorced and owns a home in the city's Staten Island borough, began his killing spree on July 6 when he shot Mohamed Gebeli, 65, in his Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, clothing store.
On August 2, Isaac Kadare, 59, was killed in his Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, budget items store. On November 16, Rahmatollah Vahidipour, 78, was gunned down in a women's clothing boutique in Brooklyn.
Perrone was identified after police circulated a picture taken from a security camera near the scene of the third attack.
A rifle and .22 caliber ammunition consistent with shell casings found at the crime scenes were discovered in a duffel bag Perrone was seen carrying in the surveillance video, police said.
An attorney who represented Perrone at his arraignment could not immediately be reached for comment.
Perrone was charged with three counts of murder and three counts of criminal possession of a weapon. He pleaded not guilty to the charges on Thursday.
Perrone told police he was affiliated with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, according to the New York Post. A New York police spokesman could not be reached for comment on Friday.
Elchonen, 26, said Perrone gave the impression of playing the role of a cop, once questioning him as to why he was on the building's roof and telling him "we've gotten reports of someone throwing eggs."
"He acted like a tough guy, but he wasn't at all,'' Elchonen said. "He spoke with this heavy Italian accent, but you could tell he was playing a part, playing a role."
Bryan Gibbs, 33, who grew up near Perrone's Staten Island home, said Perrone "speaks 100 percent fluent, northeastern English.
"He has no accent whatsoever."
Gibbs said Perrone told him he was a retired detective, and for years patrolled the neighborhood, taking notes on neighbors' homes and calling in minor violations to the city buildings department.
"He is completely unhinged,'' Gibbs said. "When I was in high school I'd come home at one and two in the morning and (Perrone) would be sitting on a lawn chair in the middle of the street - not on his property, in the middle of the street - wearing a beret and drinking a bottle of wine or a six pack of beer, and just staring up at his house. It was insane."
Investigators said they have yet to determine a clear motive for why Perrone would have carried out the attacks, which occurred near closing time when the victims were alone in their shops.

When Nnamdi Asomugha was a younger man, he?d get upset at players he saw on television, the ones he thought were underperforming.
So he?s not going to badmouth Eagles fans who have targeted him the same way.
?If a fan has an issue with that, they?re not going to get me saying that?s wrong or anything like that,? Asomugha said, via Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com. ?I can look back to being a fan and teams I liked and when a player I like comes in and, . . . it?s not working out, being upset about that.
?So I can?t now be that guy and then look at them and say, ?You can?t be upset that we haven?t won and I haven?t been, you know, Superman on the field,? even though that?s been expected of me.?
The cornerback has become the very symbol of the Eagles current woes, signing a five-year, $60 million contract to become part of the Dream Team, and struggling just like the rest of them once he got there. He?s been part of a team that?s gone 11-15 since he walked in the door, far below expectations.
That?s hard anywhere, but in Philadelphia, the heat is a little higher than in other places.
?It?s tough,? he said. ?That?s one of the things they say, . . . Mentally, how do you handle this sort of situation? Not just the losing, but losing in this environment. Because losing is different here.
?No one wants to lose. You want to win everything that you?re doing, but as they?ve pointed out, as we all know, you?ve got to win here. You just have to win here.
?So I get that question a lot from younger guys, and I just try to talk to them, keep their head in it. When you believe in yourself and believe in your team no matter what?s going on, I?m one of the people that believes it turns around at some point.?
Of course, when it does turn around, it?s likely to include a new coach, and it?s far from guaranteed it will include a 33-year-old corner who?s scheduled to make $15 million next year. But he doesn?t second-guess his decision to sign with the Eagles.
?Did I make the right decision? Should I have gone somewhere else? That doesn?t cross my mind at all,? he said. ?This is the place I wanted to be. Whatever happens or has happened, I always have the mindset that there?s something to learn from it and there?s a way to grow.
?And I think especially with what we?ve been through, the type of stuff we?ve been through the last year and a half, what did you learn from it? How can you become a better man from it? That?s going to help you on the field. That?s always been my mentality. I absolutely believe in the decision that I made and believe in this team.
?I don?t even think about that stuff. Whatever happens, I?m built to deal with that situation. Honestly? Being as honest as I can be? It doesn?t go through my mind.?
It?s going through many others, however, and they?re rightly wondering if it was all worth it.
Are you looking forward to host a web site at low cost read on the content given below:
Even though web hosting is offered free of cost by many firms, most of the web administrators are looking for low cost hosting. This is the best way to start a website for a very low monthly fee. Low cost hosting is very much suitable for the first time web administrators, which will help them to know about the advantages and disadvantages of the hosting plans without paying much for it.
One most important thing to be checked upon with affordable plans is the up-time. The up-time should be at least 99.5 per cent so that the visitors of the site are not lost because of delay in loading. Some service providers offer a number of features at a very minimal cost. These plans offer lesser quantities of bandwidth and disk space.
Even though Low cost hosting comes at a lowest rate, you might have to give up your customer service since some of the hosting providers do not provide 24 hours customer service because of which any technical problem arising in the server will not be looked upon immediately, which will in turn cause some problems to the businessman.
The best way to select a hosting company is to know what other people think about their services. Public online areas and open forums can also be used in selecting the hosting plans. This type of hosting will be of great use when the funds are limited and when you are the first time web master who looks forward to learning about how to become a good web master. The service provider that you choose helps in deciding the future of your website to a great extent. A general thinking about the lost cost companies is that they look for higher profit and so they will not be able to support the need of higher bandwidth and storage capacity. It is also believed that the low cost providers offer poor service when compared to high cost providers. But, this is not true some of them offer better service when compared to high cost service providers and even some companies offering domeinnaam registration services as well.
There exists a steady rivalry between the low and high cost hosting provider as to prove which one is best. A factor mainly considered in selecting a web hosting service provider is the cost within their means. And as such the affordable hosting companies are doing a good business.
Irrespective of the cost at which the service is offered, it is essential that the best company offering the best domeninnaam registration services should be selected.

On November 3rd and 4th 2012, I had the pleasure of attending the third Australian food blogging conference,?Eat Drink Blog,?which was held in my hometown of Adelaide. I was one of 80 lucky Australian food bloggers who were selected to attend the fun and food filled conference. Our third event of the day was a South American fiesta themed dinner at the Hilton Hotel, smack bang in the middle of Adelaide.
The pool deck of the Hilton was made 'food bloggers only' for the night. The deck looked fantastic; white tables and chairs, colourful table runners and fairy lights. Everyone loves fairy lights, right? :) The menu for the night was put together by Executive Chef of the Adelaide Hilton Hotel, Dennis Leslie. He told us that he believes this style of eating will be the next big thing. Although he has never?traveled?to South America, he one day hopes to visit and go on FOOD SAFARI! That sounds like my kind of safari. He also has his own food blog. The menu was as follows:
My food selections for the night
Dennis Leslie preparing some meat with his team
The wonderful spread
There was so much food. I was concerned about what would happen to all the leftovers. Well, anything that can be donated to a charity was vaccum packed, frozen and then given the opportunity to be turned into a delicious meal for a local charity. Any food that was not safe to be passed onto a charity, was placed into special bins, collected and turned into compost.?
So full from all the food, it was dessert time. There was a chocolate fountain and I managed to make some room for a taste. I tell you though, I was so full. It was hard to move!
I attempted to take a photo of the grand chocolate fountain only to incur every food blogger's worst nightmare....
Luckily, Simon from Simon Food Favouriteshas been kind enough to allow all delegates, sponsors, committe and presenters to use his photos:) Simon took so many photos and they're up on his Facebook page if you would like to have a squiz.
Chocolate fountain. A work of art
Awards were also presented for winners of the photography and writing competitions. I wish I could learn to take photos like those who won the?photography?competition. One day...one day...
It was a wonderful evening of food, fun and new friends. Thank you to all who made it possible. We all had a fabulous time and will always remember the experience.

Yodeling is actually one form of singing. This is different from an ordinary singing because of the intermittent high and low pitch. When you do yodel singing, you extend your note fast and repetitively. The art of yodeling is not new. In fact it had existed from several cultures all over the globe many years ago. It is a big wonder that different cultures perform yodeling differently.
Who of you have heard someone yodeling? A lot of us heard a lot of people doing it. Some appreciate the sound but there are a lot of people who conceive of it as mere noise.
Yodeling is actually one form of singing. This is different from an ordinary singing because of the intermittent high and low pitch. When you do yodel singing, you extend your note fast and repetitively. As you do this, you need to alter the pitch of the chord that emanates from the chest.
Yodeling as done by other nations
The art of yodeling is not new. In fact it had existed from several cultures all over the globe many years ago. It is a big wonder that different cultures perform yodeling differently. You will find the Africans, Swiss and Persian yodelers doing the art in versions inherent in their culture. The pygmy performers coming from Central America use another version of yodeling known as detailed polyphonic singing. The Persian version does yodeling with an accompaniment of a tahir; this is an instrument that causes fluctuations in the yodeling tones.
How about people from the Swiss Alps? To these people, yodeling was a mere means of communication when they are up in mountain peaks. Because this had been frequently used, yodel developed into a traditional style of music for many Swiss people.
Pitch in the human voice
In yodeling, you use your human voice. This has two individual registers which are called head voices and chest voices. As said, yodeling is a high-low then high-low pitch. The high pitch comes from the head register while the low pitch emanates from the chest register. Thus when yodeling you will use both your head and chest.
The pitch range between the head and the chest is difficult to attain. Even if you are already experienced in singing this, you will still encounter the difficulty. These experienced yodelers could possible attain the desired range through vocal trainings. What these experienced singers are able to do is control their voices in order to overlap the ranges. When this is done, you will be able to change from the high quality pitch of the head to the low quality pitch from the chest. If you will succeed in going backwards and forwards (head to the chest chords) or vice versa repeatedly, you be able to successfully yodel.
How to do this is simple. Try to yodel - Yodayeeeeoooo. Make the Eee come from the head voice and all the rest from the chest voice. As you do this, you try to alternate the high and the low pitch. Successfully doing this, you can comfortably be yodeling.
Yodeling is now a contemporary music. And when you want to be into the music industry you have to learn this craft. Remember that this is not learned overnight, practice makes perfect!
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? NASA is tracking a regional dust storm on Mars, but says it has not affected the operations of its two rovers on the surface.
The space agency said Wednesday the storm raging in the Martian southern hemisphere was spotted earlier this month by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter circling overhead.
The storm came within 840 miles of Opportunity's location. On the opposite side of the red planet, a weather station aboard NASA's newest rover, Curiosity, detected changes in air pressure and overnight temperature related to the storm.
Scientists want to learn more about Martian dust storms, including why some morph into storms that blanket the planet.
If this latest storm turns into a global one, the solar-powered Opportunity would see an energy decline. Curiosity, powered by plutonium, won't be as directly affected.
When it was released a year ago this month, James Rickards' Currency Wars: The Making of the Next Global Crisis was widely hailed and quickly adopted as a guidebook of sorts for economic conservatives, Fed critics and gold bugs -- especially gold bugs given Rickards' support for a return to the gold standard.

Since the book's release, the Federal Reserve has tripled-down on its policy of quantitative easing, effectively pledging to keep rates at zero indefinitely ? or until the job market dramatically improves. Nevertheless, predictions of the dollar's demise have proven unwarranted, or certainly premature. Among other issues, concerns about Europe's debt crisis have driven global investors into the greenback, rather than fleeing from it as Rickards (among others) predicts.
In the past 12 months, the Dollar Index is up about 3.3% while gold has been largely stuck in the middle of a range between the low $1500s and high $1700s, well below its August 2011 high of $1900 per ounce.
The dollar may strengthen further in the near-to-intermediate term if Israel's clash with Hamas proves to be a prelude to war with Iran next year, Rickards predicts.
'Blunt & Threatening' Fed
That said, he's sticking with a long-term forecast of the dollar's demise as the world's reserve currency. "The Fed wants a cheaper dollar but that doesn't mean they're going to get it" right away, says Rickards, a partner at JAC Capital Advisors says. "If they don't get it, they'll have to try harder."

As evidence, he cites Fed chairman Ben Bernanke's "blunt and threatening" speech in Tokyo last month, which many observers took as a response to criticism of Fed policy by global finance ministers, notably Brazil's Guido Mantega.
"What Bernanke said, reading between the lines is: 'do what you want, we'll keep printing until the dollar gets weaker,'" Rickards says. "'Your choices are inflation if you want to keep pegged [to the dollar] or higher export prices if you let your currency go up.'"
In a speech Tuesday in New York, Bernanke primarily spoke about the need to avoid the fiscal cliff but did nothing to dissuade investors from the idea the Fed would continue its policy of quantitative easing and perhaps add to it in the coming year.
"We will continue to do our best to add monetary-policy support to the recovery," Bernanke said during Q&A. "What the Federal Reserve can do and will do is continue its stated policy which is to do additional asset purchases, buy [mortgage-backed securities], and take whatever actions are appropriate to try to ensure that the outlook for labor markets improves in a sustained way and a substantial way."
The Fed could increase the amount of securities it is buying from the current plan of $40 billion per month and has set "no time limit" for when QE will stop. "They've got a long way to run," Rickards says. "We're not always in currency wars but when we are they last for a long time."
While admitting timing the dollar's downturn is difficult, Rickards says currencies are prone to "sudden shifts" and believes the notion of currency wars has "gone global," citing comments in recent months from policymakers in Taiwan, Mexico, Hong Kong and South Korea.
"When do the chickens come home to roost?," he asks. If trading partners do start to let their currencies get stronger and the psychology of U.S. consumers changes about the threat of inflation. "Instead of nice smooth path from 2% to 3%, [inflation] could gap to 6% in a matter of months," he says.

After an impressive night of "Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars," Apolo Ohno and Emmitt Smith were eliminated in the semi-finals.
"I have great appreciation for the show," eliminated Emmitt said. "After tonight, this show has lost a good chunk of charisma," co-host Tom Bergeron candidly said after the results were revealed.
Ohno did receive a perfect 30 for one of his performances with partner Karina Smirnoff on Monday, but apparently, it wasn't enough. "This competition was hard from the beginning," Ohno said after learning he wouldn't move on to the finals. "Every single person who does this show is a champion because it forces you to become a champion in your own right ... It's been a blessing.
Unsurprisingly, Shawn Johnson and her partner Derek Hough made it through to the finals, as did Melissa Rycroft and her partner Tony Dovolani. At the very last minute, it was also revealed that Kelly Monaco and her partner Val Chmerkovskiy will also be performing in next week's finale, which will be an all-female finale.
One of the highlights of the night was former "Dancing with the Stars" guest judge Paula Abdul who performed a medley of four of her hits, which she called a "dream medley." "I think this is technically one of the coolest things we've all pulled off here," Bergeron said when introducing Abdul.
British boy band The Wanted also took the stage, performing their hits "I Found You" and "I'm Glad You Came."
"Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars" will continue with its final week on Monday, Nov. 26 at 8 p.m. ET and Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 9 p.m. ET.
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Illinois may soon become the most populous U.S. state to grant a form of driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, after the nation's growing Hispanic population boosted the power of Democrats in national and state elections on November 6.
A bipartisan group of Illinois politicians announced on Tuesday they would propose such a law when the legislature convenes on November 27.
Washington state and New Mexico are the only states that currently allow illegal immigrants to get licenses. Utah allows driving permits. As the fifth most populous state, Illinois would be the biggest state to adopt such a law.
A California law that allows immigrants with federal work permits to receive driver's licenses will take effect January 1, 2013.
Supporters said the law would be good for public safety, allowing Illinois immigrant motorists to get tested on their driving skills and buy insurance.
"When you have a quarter of a million undocumented drivers on the road, it's definitely a safety concern," said Ron Holmes, spokesman for Illinois Senate President John Cullerton, who is backing the measure along with fellow Democrats Illinois Governor Pat Quinn and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
Former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar, a popular Republican, joined Democrats at a news conference in Chicago Tuesday to support the idea, as did Republican State Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka. It also has the support of the powerful House Speaker, Chicago Democrat Michael Madigan, giving it a good chance of passage.
The drive to pass the law follows the re-election of Democratic President Barack Obama, Democratic gains in the U.S. Senate and in the Illinois legislature with strong Hispanic support.
Since 2010, a handful of Republican-led states, notably border state Arizona, passed laws cracking down on illegal immigrants. But after this year's election, which saw an estimated 66 percent of Hispanics vote for Obama, Democrats and Republicans have said they want to work on an overhaul of federal immigration law.
Illinois, like California, elected a veto-proof Democratic supermajority in the legislature this month, with Democrats now controlling all branches of government.
Unlicensed, uninsured drivers are involved in almost 80,000 accidents in Illinois each year, resulting in $660 million in damage, according to the Illinois Highway Safety Coalition. Unlicensed immigrant drivers cost $64 million in damage claims alone.
The Safety Coalition said on its website that since New Mexico made the change in 2003, the rate of uninsured motorists fell from 33 percent to under 9 percent.
New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, a Republican, has fought to outlaw such licenses since she took office in January 2011. She has argued that the state's law encouraged people to come to New Mexico from other states just to obtain driver's licenses.
Holmes said supporters of the Illinois measure are talking with law enforcement officials to make sure a license for undocumented immigrants would not be used for fraud.
The measure would expand to undocumented immigrants Illinois' existing temporary visitor driver's license, used by legal immigrants. The licenses are "visually distinct" from ordinary licenses, with a purple background and the words "not valid for identification" on the front, explained Lawrence Benito, chief executive of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.
"This is a practical, commonsense approach," said Benito. He said supporters have been talking with Republicans in the legislature to try to get their support.
According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the number of Latinos in Illinois was over 2 million, or nearly 16 percent of the population.
Republicans in Illinois who have objected to the proposed law in the past could not be reached for comment.

An S corp couldn?t get away with paying its sole shareholder-employee $24,000 a year in FICA-taxable salary, while also paying him large FICA-free dividends. According to a recent federal appeals court ruling, such an arrangement isn?t reasonable.
The S corp in Watson v. U.S. (Sup. Ct. Dkt. No. 12174, 2012) is now out of options, as the U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear the case.
The IRS considers this an important case and has been watching it closely. With a win under its belt, it can continue to aggressively pursue S corps on this issue.
Intent doesn?t count. A tax accountant was the sole employee and shareholder of an S corp, which was a partner in an accounting firm. In 2002, his S corp paid him $24,000 in salary and $203,651 in dividends. In 2003, he again received $24,000 in ?salary and $175,470 in dividends.
The IRS determined that the S corp underpaid salary and FICA taxes and assessed additional FICA taxes, penalties and interest. The S corp paid a portion of the assessment and requested a refund, which was denied. In court, the S corp argued that its intent to pay a salary determined whether the amounts paid to its shareholder were wages or dividends. A trial court disagreed and ruled for the IRS, noting that the S corp?s allocation between salary and dividends wasn?t reasonable.
An appellate court affirmed the trial court?s decision. Court: Although reasonable compensation issues usually arise in the context of corporate income tax deductions, the principle for FICA taxes is the same. Since what counts is the economic substance of a transaction, rather than the form chosen by the taxpayer, it was appropriate for the IRS and the trial court to apply a reasonableness concept to FICA taxes, the court concluded.
REASONABLENESS RULES: Whether a ?salary is reasonable is a complex but crucial determination. Factors to consider:
The employee?s qualifications
The nature, extent and scope of his or her work
How salaries compare with the company?s gross and net income and with distributions to other shareholders
The company?s general salary policy
The prevailing compensation rates for comparable positions at comparable companies.
