Cities grow more than suburbs, first time in 100 years

For the first time in a century, most of America's largest cities are growing at a faster rate than their surrounding suburbs as young adults seeking a foothold in the weak job market shun home-buying and stay put in bustling urban centers.

New 2011 census estimates released Thursday highlight the dramatic switch.

Driving the resurgence are young adults, who are delaying careers, marriage and having children amid persistently high unemployment. Burdened with college debt or toiling in temporary, lower-wage positions, they are spurning homeownership in the suburbs for shorter-term, no-strings-attached apartment living, public transit and proximity to potential jobs in larger cities.

While economists tend to believe the city boom is temporary, that is not stopping many city planning agencies and apartment developers from seeking to boost their appeal to the sizable demographic of 18-to-29-year olds. They make up roughly 1 in 6 Americans, and some sociologists are calling them "generation rent." The planners and developers are betting on young Americans' continued interest in urban living, sensing that some longer-term changes such as decreased reliance on cars may be afoot.

The last time growth in big cities surpassed that in outlying areas occurred prior to 1920, before the rise of mass-produced automobiles spurred expansion beyond city cores.

New Orleans, which saw its population shrivel in the mid-2000s due to Hurricane Katrina, saw the biggest rebound in city growth relative to suburbs in the last year, 3.7 percent vs. 0.6 percent. Atlanta, Denver, Washington, D.C., and Charlotte, N.C., also showed wide disparities in city growth compared to suburbs.

Other big cities showing faster growth compared to the previous decade include Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Minneapolis and Seattle.

"I will never live in the suburbs," said Jaclyn King, 28, a project director at a Denver hospital. King, who grew up in the Denver suburb of Littleton and attended Columbine High School, still remembers her parents' 45-minute train commute to the city each day for work. She now rents a Denver house with her fianc?e.

"I just like being connected to everything down here ? concerts, work, restaurants, all of it. This is where everything's at," said King, who biked 6 miles to her job on a recent morning.

Businesses are taking notice. "Companies are really seeking to meet the need of younger people who are choosing to live in cities," said Royal Shepard, an analyst with S&P Capital IQ in New York, who tracks the residential and commercial real estate market. The ratings agency has a "positive fundamental outlook" on residential real estate investment trusts, particularly those with holdings in multifamily apartment buildings, citing in part a demographic shift.

"The recession hit suburban markets hard. What we're seeing now is young adults moving out from their parents' homes and starting to find jobs," Shepard said. "There's a bigger focus on building residences near transportation hubs, such as a train or subway station, because fewer people want to travel by car for an hour and a half for work anymore."

Katherine Newman, a sociologist and dean of arts and sciences at Johns Hopkins University who chronicled the financial struggles of young adults in a recent book, said they are emerging as a new generation of renters due to stricter mortgage requirements and mounting college debt. From 2009 to 2011, just 9 percent of 29- to 34-year-olds were approved for a first-time mortgage.

"Young adults simply can't amass the down payments needed and don't have the earnings," she said. "They will be renting for a very long time."

The numbers are based largely on an analysis of census estimates as of July 2011 for cities and "primary cities," defined as boundaries of incorporated divisions and closely interrelated adjacent areas, by William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution. They are supplemented with data from the New York Federal Reserve as well as Kenneth Johnson, a sociology professor at the University of New Hampshire.

Primary cities in large metropolitan areas with populations of more than 1 million grew by 1.1 percent last year, compared with 0.9 percent in surrounding suburbs. While the definitions of city and suburb have changed over the decades, it's the first time that growth of large core cities outpaced that of suburbs since the early 1900s.

During the mid-decade housing boom, city growth came close to a standstill as the wide availability of low-interest mortgages pushed new residential development outward.

Will it hold?
In all, city growth in 2011 surpassed or equaled that of suburbs in roughly 33 of the nation's 51 large metro areas, compared to just five in the last decade.

"City growth in recent years clearly has ramped up faster than suburban growth has declined, suggesting an increased attractiveness of cities," Frey said. "The real question is, will cities continue to hold their own when the suburban housing market picks up? Cities that market themselves well to young people and that offer job growth, cultural amenities and access to rapid transit are likely to see continued growth."

In Denver, for instance, civic leaders have been actively promoting their city to young, educated professionals ages 25 to 34, touting in brochures the city's "walkable urbanism" including a newly formed Theatre District, pedestrian walkways, high-rise apartments, bicycle lanes and a variety of sidewalk cafes and restaurants.

Similar efforts have been under way in other larger cities across the U.S., including Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C., seeking to turn excess city asphalt to greenery with new planters, small parks and pedestrian plazas.

In recent years, the share of 16- to 39-year-olds with driver's licenses has declined markedly. The suburb also is no longer a refuge from poverty, now surpassing cities in numbers of poor people.

Still, some economists aren't so certain "generation rent" will last. They point to practical considerations such as better schools in the suburbs, continued government tax breaks for home ownership and subsidies for travel in rural areas, as well as rapidly rising downtown rents, that are likely to push young adults to the suburbs once they sort out decisions about jobs, kids and finances.

Symm Vafeades, 33, isn't so sure. Growing up in Denver, he briefly moved outside the city as an adult to experience suburban life. Before long, though, he was back in town. Vafeades said he likes being able to stop at his favorite shop for iced coffee and a breakfast burrito on his way to work instead of sitting in traffic. His commute to his job as an architect clocks in at just 2 miles.

"I much prefer living in the city," Vafeades said. "There's just a lot more you can do without having to drive everywhere."

Other findings:

?Roughly 52 of the 73 cities with population of greater than 250,000 showed faster annual growth (or slower rates of losses) in 2011 than their average growth over the last decade. Cities switching from declines to gains included Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn.

?Texas dominated the list of the 15 fastest-growing large cities from April 2010 to July 2011, including Round Rock, Austin, Plano, McKinney, Frisco, Denton, McAllen and Carrollton.

?The city of Chicago added nearly 9,000 people last year compared to annual losses of roughly 20,000 in the last decade, having benefited as fewer moved to the outlying exurban areas of Will and Kendall counties. Detroit saw much smaller losses last year, a sign that its 25 percent decline over the past decade has bottomed out.

?New York remained the most populous city at 8.2 million, followed by Los Angeles and Chicago. The 15 most populous cities were unchanged since the 2010 census with the exception of Austin, Texas, which moved up from 14th to 13th, supplanting San Francisco.

94% Moonrise Kingdom

All Critics (159) | Top Critics (41) | Fresh (147) | Rotten (10) | DVD (1)

Anderson never loses his core themes - young love, the need to escape, the bind and bluster of family. His "Kingdom" may not be large, but it is perfectly appointed.

Though undeniably smart and charming, "Moonrise Kingdom" loves itself the way the callow Holden Caulfield loves himself: unconditionally. Salinger understood the problem with that. Anderson may not.

The latest unadulterated delight from Wes Anderson, director of "Rushmore," "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox."

The usual complaints and caveats about Anderson - he's precious, his characters have no grounding in the real world - can be made about Moonrise Kingdom, but so what?

Anderson and his actors are able to convey more genuine feeling through these devices than most filmmakers can with more-traditional means.

One knock against some of Anderson's previous efforts is that they're too clever - so clever, in fact, that the humanity gets sucked out of them. That doesn't happen here.

Eventually Anderson's penchant for style over soul becomes draining.

The plot isn't as fetching as the presentation, starting with the tersely whimsical dialogue. There aren't punch lines for big laughs, but rather a seamless series of non sequiturs for smiles.

It's funny, it's touching, it's Anderson doing what he does better than he's ever done before.

Wonderfully inventive and entirely immersing.

The great thing about Wes Anderson, other than his fabulously childlike imagination, is his deep attention to the smallest details.

This isn't Wes Anderson's best effort by any stretch. However, any Anderson is better than no Anderson at all.

This film contains some of cinema history's best lightning strikes.

Wes Anderson's films are stylistic carbon copies of each other, merely swapping out storylines and characters. It's like going to a bunch of different restaurants and ordering the exact same meal -- you walk in knowing what you're going to get.

Most of Wes Anderson's previous pictures came from the head; Moonrise Kingdom is one from the heart.

Moonrise Kingdom is a charming reminder of Anderson's particular talent for spinning fantasies about the collective childhood we all wish we had.

As fussy as anything Anderson has ever done, but instead of being overstuffed, as virtually all of his movies have been, for good and ill, [the film] is mostly delicate.

A sometimes precocious but mostly whimsical and artfully fluent evocation of adolescent enthusiasm and adult ennui.

Anderson's latest effort is like an Instagram photo - a nostalgic snapshot that seems to be of different time and place but is really the twee affectation of a world that never existed.

[Anderson] may make it look easy because of how firmly his mannerisms are established at this point, but it takes a real artist to evoke the rocky emotional storms of adolescence and adulthood with such clear eyes and precise voice.

Anderson's films have been described as quirky, eccentric and whimsical. But there is also a genuine charm and heart that is driven by the Anderson's love for his characters, and the love those characters have for one another.

Wes Anderson, at 43, is still grappling with adolescence.

More unbearable Anderson whimsy.

When the storm arrives, it's a doozy, especially as it intensifies a final, thrilling chase sequence.

NYTimes starts Chinese site; microblogs go offline

(AP) ? The New York Times started a Chinese-language website Thursday that generated so much interest in China two of its microblog accounts drew thousands of followers and then were apparently taken offline for several hours.

The Times' accounts on microblog sites hosted by two popular Chinese web portals were offline Thursday morning, said Craig Smith, the paper's China managing director. "We are seeking to clarify the situation with those accounts," said Smith, adding that the Chinese site cn.nytimes.com has not been affected and continued to receive "strong traffic."

The paper's Chinese microblog accounts were activated Wednesday, attracting around 10,000 followers on Sina Weibo within a day and several thousand users on other sites. But on Thursday morning, the accounts hosted by Sina and Sohu.com appeared to have been taken down. The account on Tencent, another popular portal, remained active but functions such as commenting and forwarding posts were apparently disabled.

By late afternoon, the Times' Sina microblog site was accessible again.

The Times had no indication its microblogs went offline because of the company or its content, or if a technical problem occurred, Smith later said.

Sina public relations staffer Mao Taotao said the site could be accessed and the company had no reports of problems. A male customer service staffer at Sohu surnamed Wang would not comment on whether the Times' account was offline and would say only that he had passed on the query to the relevant departments.

The Chinese blogosphere lit up with speculation that the Times' microblog sites had been censored.

Bloomberg's English-language site, meanwhile, appeared to be inaccessible from mainland China. Bloomberg spokeswoman Belina Tan said the company was looking into reports of technical difficulties on its China website.

The online outages are an indication of the challenges that foreign news organizations face in trying to reach out to the Chinese audience, for whom the main sources of information remain state-controlled media.

The Times joins the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal and several other English-language news titans in offering news in Chinese to tap into the huge China market and break the government's controls on information.

Regulations prohibit foreign companies from distributing news directly, and to get around that, the Times, like its predecessors, has located its servers offshore. That tactic also leaves them susceptible to being blocked by censors and thereby jeopardizing their advertising.

The Wall Street Journal began its Chinese offerings a decade ago. While the site has struggled at times, executives have said over the past three years it has thrived, reaching more than 35 million page views a month. After it posted an article in October 2010 about the Nobel Peace Prize being awarded to jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, the site was blocked for five weeks and lost half its page views, according to a presentation one executive gave a business group.

Updated Logos Earning Marketers New Customer Attention ...

With over 2 million businesses being created every year, graphic artists and sign companies have plenty of opportunity to make a visual impression for their clients. In addition, businesses often decide to update or refresh their logos because of mergers, acquisitions or the need to rebrand themselves. Logo design can make a huge difference for a business and experts recommend that marketers take the time to get it right.

Tom Searcy, a business advisor, reminds readers of the SalesMachine blog that a good logo is part of the ?appealing tangibles? that clients consider when they are deciding whether they will do business with a specific enterprise. Get the logo wrong and a marketer misses an opportunity to connect with potential customers in key ways.

Along with encouraging businesses to create a logo, Searcy also has some advice about what constitutes an effective design.

  • Line weight: Searcy cautions against using thin line weights in graphics. In some print publications, these lines may disappear altogether.
  • Typeface: It might seem like a good idea to stand out by using a trendy typeface. But when these typefaces go out of style, the business ends up looking dated. In other cases, trendy typefaces can be hard to read.
  • Balance: Good graphic artists understand what draws the human eye in a positive way. A geometric balance of text, images, shapes and colors will do the trick because consumers have been trained by decades of visual iconography. When a logo falls outside that balance, it might interest some consumers but it may also detract from the impact a marketer is trying to make.

Companies that are seeking to rebrand themselves might want to consider a new or refreshed logo as part of the revised image they want to present to potential customers. And new businesses should be prepared to pay the going rate for a good logo. As Searcy reminds readers, ?You have only one chance to make a first impression.?

Selena Gomez Part Of Me Premiere: Fashion Fail

Selena Gomez joined a pack of wild celebrities who went out to show their support for the premiere of Katy Perry’s Part Of Me movie. A lot of the big wigs were on hand, including Justin Bieber, Robert Pattinson and Paris Hilton, but one celebrity stood out. Yes, the former Disney star turned long term stalker of the Biebs showed up looking like a walking piniatta. Her ruffly bright red dress is bad enough in itself. Then you throw in some gas-station sun glasses and you have a real disaster on your hands.   And please forgive me if I’m out of touch, but is that her mother with her wearing the same glasses? If so, that’s actually kind of cute. But all it does is double-up this ridiculous fashion fail. Come on Selena, you can do better than this! Photos By: WENN.COM

(AP) ? Gunmen raided the headquarters of a pro-government Syrian TV station early Wednesday, demolishing the building and killing three employees, the state media reported. Officials denounced what they called a rebel "massacre against the freedom of the press."

SANA added that the attack on Ikhbariya TV occurred in the town of Drousha, about 20 kilometers (14 miles) south of the capital Damascus. Hours after the attack, the station was still on the air broadcasting its programs.

Ikhbariya is privately-owned but strongly supports President Bashar Assad's regime. Pro-government journalists have been targeted on several previous occasions during the 15-month uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime, although such incidents are comparatively rare.

Earlier this month, two Ikhbariya employees were shot and seriously wounded by gunmen in the northwestern town of Haffa while covering clashes between government troops and insurgents.

Rebels deny they target the media. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the raid and the deaths of several employees, but had no other information.

Information Minister Omran al-Zoebi told reporters outside the station that gunmen stormed the compound, placed explosives and then detonated them.

"What happened today is a massacre, a massacre against the freedom of the press," al-Zoebi said in comments broadcast on state-run Syrian TV. "They carried out a terrifying massacre by executing the employees."

An employee at the station said several other employees were wounded in the attack and other guards were kidnapped when the gunmen attacked just before 4 a.m. local time.

The employee, who did not give his name for fear of repercussions, said the gunmen drove him about 200 meters (yards) away, and then he heard the explosion of the station being demolished. "I was terrified when they blindfolded me and took me away," the man said by telephone.

State-run Syrian TV showed a demolished structure without a ceiling, saying it was the station's main studio. It also showed what it said were tapes on fire amid piles of debris.

Darvish has 10 Ks as Rangers?stop Tigers

By STEPHEN HAWKINS

updated 1:26 a.m. ET June 27, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Yu Darvish is feeling right at home in Texas, where he's already done something only one other major league pitcher has accomplished in the past half-century.

The Japanese standout has won his first seven career home starts after the Rangers' 7-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. Overall, he matched the American League lead with his 10th victory less than halfway through his first season in the majors.

Darvish (10-4) struck out 10 in seven innings for his fourth double-digit strikeout game. After giving up two runs the first four batters, he settled down and got into a nice groove - something he has already done a few times with the Rangers after sluggish starts.

"It seemed like the longer the game went, the better he got," manager Ron Washington said. "He was trying to get rhythm again those first few innings. They put some runs on the board, but we came back and answered, and he continued to pound the strike zone. All of a sudden his fastball was crisper, his breaking ball was crisper."

The Rangers said, according to Elias, the only other pitcher in the past 50 years to win his first seven career home starts was Carlos Perez for the Montreal Expos - eight in 1995. Kenny Rogers is the only other pitcher to win seven consecutive starts at Rangers Ballpark at any point.

The only walk Darvish allowed was Austin Jackson's to start the game, though the big right-hander hit Miguel Cabrera in the left earflap of his helmet with a 92-mph fastball before Prince Fielder's double quickly put the Tigers up 2-0.

Darvish threw 113 pitches on a night when the game-time temperature was 103 degrees, and finished strong. He retired the last seven batters he faced, striking out the last two.

"That's one of the top high-level lineups in the league and I was looking forward to facing these hitters," said Darvish, who didn't feel overwhelmed by the heat either. "My teammates still tell me it's not as hot as it's going to get. ... Even though it was hot, I didn't feel too uncomfortable."

The AL West-leading Rangers went ahead to stay with a four-run fourth. They were up 5-3 after consecutive RBI singles by Yorvit Torrealba and Brandon Snyder - the Nos. 8 and 9 batters in the lineup.

Josh Hamilton later homered for the second night in a row, his leadoff shot in the seventh was his 24th of the season to match Toronto's Jose Bautista for the major league lead. Hamilton has a majors-best 67 RBIs.

Prince Fielder drove in four runs for the Tigers, including a two-run double in the first. Three innings later, when the temperature was still in triple digits, Fielder hit his 12th homer to make it 3-1.

"We did a decent job against Darvish. If you can get five runs off him you're doing pretty well," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "He has good secondary pitches. He looks like a breaking-ball pitcher."

Drew Smyly (2-3) was activated from the disabled list to start after being out since June 11 with a blister on his left middle finger. The lefty struck out three while allowing six runs and eight hits over 4 2-3 innings.

Ian Kinsler led off the Texas first with his first homer since June 8.

Adrian Beltre had a one-out infield single in the fourth and scored on Michael Young's triple to left-center. Nelson Cruz followed with an RBI single and then stole second base before Torreabla's hit. Cruz scored the tiebreaking run when he slid around catcher Alex Avila's swiping tag attempt and a bat to reach out and touch the plate.

Joe Nathan worked a perfect ninth for his 17th save in 18 chances. Mike Adams escaped trouble in the eighth, when the first two batters reached before deep fly balls by Cabrera and Delmon Young sandwiched an RBI grounder by Fielder.

Darvish joined teammate Matt Harrison and Tampa Bay left-hander David Price as the American League's only 10-game winners. It was Darvish's last start before the All-Star rosters will be announced Sunday.

"A job of a starting pitcher is quality starts and keeping the team in the game," Darvish said. "It's been iffy at times, but I just think overall being able to do that, the result is that I got those wins. Overall as a starting pitcher, I think I am doing my role, that job."

But Darvish had a bit of a rough start, even though Detroit scored three fewer first-inning runs than the previous night.

Cabrera dropped to the ground and was sprawled out in a sitting position when he looked toward the mound after getting hit in the head. A trainer came out and checked on Cabrera, who appeared a bit dazed as he got up and walked toward first base. He then scored from first on Fielder's drive into the left-center gap.

"He has a good fastball, and he's sneaky with his delivery. He has a plethora of different pitches," said Quintin Berry, who had an RBI single for the Tigers. "We got a couple of runs early and felt good about it."

Notes: Beltre is hitting .500 (22 of 44) in his past 12 games. ... Avila was back in the Tigers lineup after missing the series opener with tendinitis in his left knee. He had a double in the fifth and scored on Berry's single. ... Tigers closer Jose Valverde, who hadn't pitched since June 15 because of a sprained right wrist, pitched a perfect eighth. ... Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey is the only other pitcher in the majors with four 10-strikeout games. ... During a kiss-cam segment between innings, Rangers president Nolan Ryan and his wife Ruth were shown on the video board with a message wishing them a Happy 45th anniversary. Also shown was a picture of the couple on their wedding day.

Political ads by independent groups are not only common -- they are more effective

To avoid backlash, political candidates rely on independent groups to attack their opponents

Los Angeles, CA (June 26, 2012) As the election season ramps up, many voters are already experiencing attack ad fatigue. With the rise of the so-called Super PACs and greatly increased spending by independent groups more generally, many election watchers are anticipating that there will be far more ads and far more attack ads on the airwaves in this election than ever before. According to a recent article in American Politics Research, a SAGE journal, the power of ads sponsored by independent groups rests not just in their sheer volume, but also in their relative effectiveness. When an attack ad is sponsored by an independent group, the authors found that the ad is far more effective than when the same ad is sponsored by a candidate.

"This study indicates that candidates have every reason to hope for an unofficial division of labor, in which independent groups that are unaccountable to voters will do the dirty work of running these kinds of harsh attack ads that the candidates would rather not do themselves," wrote study authors Deborah Jordan Brooks and Michael Murov.

Brooks and Murov conducted an experiment by showing a negative state-level election ad about a particular fictitious candidate. The ad was either endorsed by the candidate's opponent, by a nonpartisan independent group, or unattributed to either and shown to a sample of 1,500 U.S. adults.

Regardless of sponsorship, Brooks and Murov found that the ads were similarly persuasive regarding the flaws of the candidate who was the target of the ad. The difference was that public penalized a candidate for sponsoring such an ad with what is known as a "backlash" effect. Because there was far less backlash aimed towards the benefitting candidate if the ad sponsor was an independent group, the attack was far more effective when it was sponsored by Citizens for a Better State Government than by the candidate himself.

The authors also suggest that since there is reduced potential of backlash from voters, independent groups may face incentives to produce highly controversial advertisements while facing relatively few incentives to be truthful in ads.

"To the extent that they may generate controversy, they may garner free media coverage which can extend their reach well beyond actual ad expenditures," wrote the authors.

Electronic dance music stars from around the world joined fans this weekend in paying homage to Swedish House Mafia, after the Holy Trinity of House announced via their website that their upcoming tour will be their last.

"Today we want to share with you that the tour we are about to go on will be our last. We want to thank every single one of you that came with us on this journey. We came, we raved, we loved," the message reads.

Together the Swedes — Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso— joined their prolific individual talents into one of dance music's most commercially successful and intriguing brands, leading the charge of EDM's American takeover. With five widely successful singles in two years, SHM dominated traditional music festivals like Coachella, sold out Madison Square Garden and hosted their own Masquerade Motel mini-festivals attended by tens of thousands in Miami.

SHM's announcement was hard to believe considering their biggest career undertaking is still before them: a July show at Milton Keynes Bowl in England, which holds 65,000 people.

"I just heard @swedishousemfia are gonna split. I hope it's not true They are really special," David Guetta tweeted on Saturday.

DJ Chuckie tweeted, "Sad news for electronic music, i just heard that the @swedishousemfia just announced they gonna break up!"

Some DJ/producers used the occasion to celebrate how far Swedish House Mafia have come, even thanking them for their tutelage and inspiration.

"Well ... @swedishousemfia will be a legend for ever!" Zedd wrote.

"Just wanted to tip my hat (the A-Trak hat) to @swedishousemfia. They invited me to MSG which was huge. Those are my bros. *#bros," A-Trak tweeted, referencing his opening duties at MSG last December.

Hardwell tweeted, "We gonna miss you @swedishousemfia! You've been a huge inspiration for me, every producer and the whole music scene! #wecameweravedweloved."

But the fun is far from over. There is much to look forward to from Swedish House Mafia, including their Sydney, Australia-inspired new single, possibly titled "Don't You Worry Child" per an SHM tweet and Dancing Astronaut. Upcoming tour dates include the aforementioned Milton Keynes Bowl in England (July 14), recurring weekly dates at Ushuaia in Ibiza (July 4 through August 29) and a final leg of their tour (presumably including farewell dates in the U.S.) to be announced in August.

Seagate and DensBits team up on solid-state drives for the home, call truce in the HDD versus SSD war

Seagate Pulsar XT 2It's an understatement to say that Seagate started off on the wrong foot in its attitude towards solid-state drives: the company only slowly came around to embracing flash memory, and then mostly for the enterprise crowd and hybrid drive lovers. A newly-struck partnership between Seagate and controller maker DensBits is signalling a more serious attempt to offer SSDs to everyday users. Along with catering to the business folk, Seagate wants its new teammate's help on building "low-cost, high-performance" consumer SSDs. Most of the drives for the plebeians will use slower but denser 3-bits-per-cell memory made on a process under 20 nanometers, while the suits will get faster 2-bits-per-cell flash for their servers. The deal doesn't have any timetable attached, although Seagate's decision to pour equity cash into DensBits suggests it's not just a one-time fling.
