SAO PAULO (AP) -Doctors say former FIFA president and IOC member Joao Havelange is continuing to improve from an infection on his right ankle and is set to leave intensive care.
The Samaritano Hospital said in a statement that the 95-year-old Havelange is in stable condition and will be transferred to a semi-intensive care unit on Monday.
The hospital says Havelange "is responding well to treatment." He has been hospitalized since March 18 because of septic arthritis, a serious bacterial infection that affects joints.
Havelange resigned from the International Olympic Committee late last year citing undisclosed health reasons, avoiding a possible suspension for allegedly taking kickbacks from former FIFA marketing partner ISL. He presided over FIFA from 1974-98.
