MF Global Farmers Get Tax Relief from IRS - Young Theo62's blog
The IRS has announced it will give needed tax relief to farmers who could not properly file their taxes due to not receiving their 1099 by the March 1 deadline from the now defunct MF Global.? A Reuters article entitled IRS Waives Fines for Farmers Missing Tax Info from MF Global reports that farmers who underreported their taxes because of missing information from MF Global will not be penalized.
Run by former New Jersey Gov. and CEO of Goldman Sachs, Jon Corzine, MF Global crumbled on October 31 and filed for bankruptcy mainly due to its exposure to European sovereign debt. This is seen as a colossal failure of a derivatives brokerage firm whereby $1.2 billion in company assets including client investments disappeared.
MF Global had a large share of agricultural clients facing IRS problems who had to scramble to report their earnings without the proper financial information.? Many used personal records to estimate earnings as best they could and reported those figures to the IRS.
Farmers emerging from the MF Global mess are required to file their taxes by March 1 if:
- Two-thirds of their gross income was earned from farming
- They did not file a mid-January estimate of earnings.
According to IRS spokesman Eric Smith in a Friday press release it is not uncommon for the Agency to waive penalties in extreme circumstances, including natural disasters or instances such as these. While penalty abatement may be a comfort in the short term, most of MF Global clients were not uber-wealthy?their lost investments will take many years to recoup.? However, there is a silver lining in every cloud ? and in this case, Internal Revenue Code Section 165 could shine brightly for MF Global victims.
IRS Section 165 Can Provide Tax Help to Victims of Investment Fraud

Greek Artist Petros Vrellis is a big admirer of Vincent Van Gogh, which prompted him to produce an interactive version of Starry Night. It took him a patience-sapping six months to produce the original PC version, where finger swipes redirect the painter's famous daubs into a light and sound show. Miracle Recovery: From Paralyzed to Helping Others
Janne Kouri was told he would never walk again. Paralyzed from the neck down after a freak accident in the ocean five years ago, Kouri's entire world was completely turned upside down. But rather than give up, Kourani pushed through with the support of his wife and family, and turned his tragedy into a life's work.
Now, five years after he was told there was no hope for recovery, the 36-year-old can stand up on his own without a walker.
On August 5, 2006, Kouri, of Hermosa Beach, Calif., was playing beach volleyball with some friends when he ran down to the ocean to cool off in between games. He dove into the waves, crashed his head into a hidden sand-bar, and was instantly paralyzed from the neck down.
"I knew something really bad had happened because I couldn't move anything," said Kouri, who was 31 at the time of the accident. "There definitely was -- a moment there where I was thinking that that could be my last breath."
Fortunately an off-duty EMT pulled him ashore and rushed him to the hospital. Kouri was alive, but a doctor delivered devastating news to his then-girlfriend, Susan.
"[The doctor] looked me right in the eye and said, 'You need to be prepared for him never to walk again,'" Susan Kouri, 36, recalled. "I will never forget that."

Before the accident, Kouri had worked as a director of an online social network and was a force of nature. At 6' 4" and 285 pounds, he was the star defensive tackle on the Georgetown University football field with NFL prospects and was called "the general" by his friends because of his take-charge attitude.
With his spinal cord fractured in two places, Kouri spent two months in intensive care, developed pneumonia and nearly died twice.
"There were many times he came to me and said, 'You know, you don't need to do this. You don't need to be here,'" Susan said. "I promised him that as long as his heart and his mind stayed the same that I would love him."
That love would change everything, giving Kouri the determination to move forward with his life. As his health returned, the reality of his paralysis was grim and treatment options were bleak.
Cutting-Edge Research Renews Couple's Hope
Finally, the couple found their ray of hope. In their research and after months of Susan traveling around the country visiting rehab centers, they discovered Dr. Susan Harkema at the Frazier Rehabilitation Institute in Louisville, Ky.
Harkema helped develop a cutting-edge therapy known as "loco-motor training," which teaches the spinal cord how to control motor functions like walking, through repetitive motion. The late actor Christopher Reeve was among her first test subjects to utilize the training; the therapy has now helped hundreds of spinal cord injury victims.
"Dr. Harkema was the one person that told us, 'There is hope for recovery,'" Kouri said.
The couple moved to Louisville to work with Harkema.
"The first day I got there they put me up on the treadmill and I passed out in seven seconds. Shortly after, within days after, I was able to stay up for ten, 15 minutes, and then an hour," Kouri said. "Very quickly I started to get a lot stronger. My circulation improved, blood pressure improved, muscle strength."
After two to three months of training, Kouri had his first milestone -- a little toe wiggle.
"I started wiggling one of my toes, which was an incredible moment," he said. "And I said, 'You know what? I have a chance here."

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? The four candidates for Mexico's presidency officially launched their campaigns for the July 1 election on Friday, all of them promising change.
Enrique Pena Nieto, who is running for the Institutional Revolutionary Party that ruled Mexico from 1929 to 2000, used the word "change" 26 times in his first official campaign speech.
"Mexico is clear on what it wants, and it doesn't want more of the same," Pena Nieto declared in the western city of Guadalajara. "It wants to exit this stage of shadow and darkness and enter a new stage of light and hope."
Pena Nieto's focus on "a grand crusade for change" and "the change we want" echoed the 2008 campaign slogan of President Barack Obama, "change we can believe in." It was unclear whether that echo was intentional.
The Obama campaign's skillful use of social media in 2008, when it employed email, text messages and the Web to reach voters, appears to have made an impact on the Mexican political scene.
Josefina Vazquez Mota, whose pre-campaign appearances have been plagued by logistical difficulties and poor planning, told supporters Friday to use social media, "this new world that accompanies us," to attract potential voters.
"It's going to be hard to reach every corner of the country," Vazquez Mota acknowledged. In fact, the first female candidate for a major Mexican party has had trouble making it on time to campaign events in Mexico City, let alone the often violent and isolated outlying regions of the country.
Though she is an incumbent-party candidate, Vazquez Mota is campaigning on the one-word slogan, "Different," perhaps an attempt to distance herself from President Felipe Calderon's six-year offensive against drug cartels. More than 47,000 lives have been lost to drug-related violence in that time.
All three major-party candidates said they want to bring peace to Mexico.
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who is making his second run for the presidency for the leftist Democratic Revolution Party after narrowly losing the 2006 election, said at his first campaign news conference Friday that he represents "true change."
Lopez Obrador led weeks of street blockades to protest what he claimed was fraud in the 2006 elections and later anointed himself as "legitimate president." He has since been seeking to change his angry, radical image for a softer one.
"Let all of us, from below, undertake a campaign to build a new, just, humane, dignified, free democratic and loving republic," he said.
Supporters such as 58-year-old schoolteacher Beatriz Lara Aguirre say Lopez Obrador has changed this time around: "He's more serene," she commented. But the leftist candidate complained as he did six years ago that "we are going to come up against money, government agencies and some news media who want to impose (the choice of) the next president on us."

If a loved one has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, time is precious and there are 5 things you need to do.? In part 1 of this article, we discussed determining your loved one?s wishes, helping your loved one document his love, and making sure his estate plan is comprehensive and up-to-date.

4.? Listen
Your loved one will likely feel the need to talk about his life and you are helping by simply listening.? He may at times feel angry, ripped off, wishful, sad, happy, satisfied, and scared.? All of these feelings are normal.
5.? Accept Help?
Recognize that you can?t provide everything your loved one needs and that others will feel better if they are able to help.? Let friends and family help where they can, recognizing that not all folks are good at the same things.
- Some family members may be good at dealing with professionals such as the estate planning attorney, CPA, insurance professional, and financial advisor.
- Others may work well with the doctors, nurses, social workers, and hospice team.
- Some may help by cleaning out the garage, while others help by making meals, getting the taxes filed, or running errands.
- Others may contribute by sitting beside or with physical care.

Piers Morgan Black Lists Madonna From Show
Piers Morgan has joined the growing list of people who aren?t exactly thrilled with Madonna. She has apparently earned herself an all out ban from his CNN show and even his UK show. Earlier this week we reported that some people in the music industry were a little miffed by Madonna?s comments on stage at a recent electronic music festival. At that show, she jumped on stage and made a drug-related reference to MDMA by asking the crowd if they have ?seen Molly.? This caused electronic music heavyweight Deadmau5 to completely destroy her on Twitter, by saying she was a bad influence on the young crowd. Now apparently Piers Morgan has beef with Madge. TMZ reported today that he has totally banned her from his talk show. The strangest part is that Piers did not give a reason, but was clear about his stance. He sent the following to her on Twitter: ?Welcome to Twitter. You’re still banned from my show. Love Piers X.” The only trouble is that she was recently invited on his UK show. Her manager even sent the invite back to him via Twitter. Piers then zapped the following response: ?Madonna has only been banned from [...]

Ripping electrons from their cores: Physicists mix two lasers to create light at many frequencies
ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? A team of physicists at UC Santa Barbara has seen the light, and it comes in many different colors. By aiming high- and low-frequency laser beams at a semiconductor, the researchers caused electrons to be ripped from their cores, accelerated, and then smashed back into the cores they left behind. This recollision produced multiple frequencies of light simultaneously.
Their findings appear in the current issue of the science journal Nature.
"This is a very remarkable phenomenon. I have never seen anything like this before," said Mark Sherwin, whose research group made the groundbreaking discovery. Sherwin is a professor of physics at UCSB and a co-author of the paper. He is also director of the campus's Institute for Terahertz Science and Technology.
When the high-frequency optical laser beam hits the semiconductor material -- in this case, gallium arsenide nanostructures -- it creates an electron-hole pair called an exciton. The electron is negatively charged, and the hole is positively charged, and the two are bound together by their mutual attraction. "The high-frequency laser creates electrons and holes," Sherwin explained. "The very strong, low-frequency free electron laser beam rips the electron away from the hole and accelerates it. As the low-frequency field oscillates, it causes the electron to come careening back to the hole." The electron has excess energy because it has been accelerated, and when it slams back into the hole, the recombined electron-hole pair emits photons at new frequencies.
"It's fairly routine to mix the lasers and get one or two new frequencies, Sherwin continued. "But to see all these different new frequencies, up to 11 in our experiment, is the exciting phenomenon. Each frequency corresponds to a different color."
In terms of real-world applications, the electron-hole recollision phenomenon has the potential to significantly increase the speed of data transfer and communication processes. One possible application involves multiplexing -- the ability to send data down multiple channels -- and another is high-speed modulation.
"Think of your cable Internet," explained Ben Zaks, a UCSB doctoral student in physics and the paper's lead author. "The cable is a bundle of fiber optics, and you're sending a beam with a wavelength that's approximately 1.5 microns down the line. But within that beam there are a lot of frequencies separated by small gaps, like a fine-toothed comb. Information going one way moves on one frequency, and information going another way uses another frequency. You want to have a lot of frequencies available, but not too far from one another."
The electron-hole recollision phenomenon does just that -- it creates light at new frequencies, with optimal separation between them.
The researchers utilize a free electron laser -- a building-size machine in UCSB's Broida Hall -- to produce the electron-hole recollisions, which they note is not practical for real-world applications. Theoretically, however, a transistor could be used in place of the free electron laser to produce the strong terahertz fields. "The transistor would then modulate the near infrared beam," Zaks continued. "Our data indicates that we are modulating the near infrared laser at twice the terahertz frequency. This is where we could really see this working to increase the speed of optical modulation, which is how you get information down a cable line."
The electron-hole recollision phenomenon creates many new avenues for research and exploration, Sherwin noted. "It is an interesting time because there are a lot of people who can participate in doing this kind of research," he said. "We have a unique tool -- a free electron laser -- which gives us a big advantage for exploring the properties of fundamental materials. We just put it in front of our laser beams and measure the colors of light going out. Now that we've seen this phenomenon, we can start doing the hard work of putting the pieces together on a chip."
In discussing the research team's discovery, Sherwin cited Michael Polanyi, the Hungarian scientist and science philosopher. "He talked about growing points in science, and I'm hoping this is going to be one of those, where a lot of people can use it as a foundation for going off in a lot of different directions," he said. "I want to continue working on it, but I'd like to see a lot of other people join in."
Also contributing to the research is the paper's second author, R.B. Liu of The Chinese University in Hong Kong. "This is an excellent example of the value of communicating with scientists from all over the globe," said Sherwin. "If we had never met, this research would not have happened."

Everyone has experienced at time when one has wanted to change the look of his/her home but is too clueless to find a starting point because of the enormity of the project. You might have been bored with the house looking the same but do not know how to go about altering it in a cost effective manner. When thinking about home improvements, many are apprehensive about the amount it might cost them, and ultimately shrink away. However, with some planning and imagination, home improvements can be done with minimal costs, with glowing results.
If you are thinking of re-decorating rooms, then there is much that can be done with just some rearrangements. Firstly, determine the purpose of the room. What has the room been used for so far? Would you like to change the feel of the room so as to fix its function? A room that has till now only been a vague living/sitting space can be converted to a ?family? room.
Transform it according to your family. If you have young children, put a lot of huge soft cushions for them to play around. You can use brightly colored covers. If you have a television here, try mounting it on a wall so that it does get damaged when the kids are horsing around. Put a rug as well on the floor. The whole feel of the room will become warm and welcoming for children and their friends. If your budget allows you, you can try painting the walls in warm colors like pale orange or brown too.
Kitchens are one place that we think of altering very frequently. This is probably because we spend a lot of time there, especially if the dining area is connected to it. One of the major changes that can be done here is changing the cabinets. Cabinets have the capacity to start looking stolid too soon. If the entire cabinet area cannot be changed, you can try just painting its doors, and you will see an immediate transformation. Adding extra drawers or shelves will also increase your space, giving you room on the counter for more working area.
Lighting also creates dramatic effects. Consider adding or changing the placement of lights at your home. If you have any pictures or paintings, put a soft focus light above them to emphasize them. You can soften a room by adding a lamp or two with a low intensity bulb. Get lighting that can be twisted around to focus on the area where you are working.
One instant and inexpensive way of perking up the look of an area is putting plants. You can pick from a variety of indoor plants. For a functional area that has much furniture or where you need a moving space, pick plants that do not have many leaves or branches. It should be straight growing. If you want to fill in a space, pick leafy plants. Either way, a warm feeling will enter your home.
Instead of changing windows entirely, replace your plain glass with tinted or stained glass. The colors that filter in along with sunlight will drastically brighten up any room. Team this up with striking curtains to complete the look.
In these ways, big changes can be made with little investment to your home d?cor resulting in stylish and beautiful living spaces.
