Summary Box: AirAsia X ends Europe, India flights (AP)

GROUNDED: Malaysia's long-haul budget carrier AirAsia X said it would eliminate flights to Europe and India as soaring fuel prices, exorbitant taxes and weakening demand took a toll on its operations.

SKY-HIGH FUEL AND RULES: Oil prices have tripled since AirAsia X launched flights to London in early 2009, and are likely to remain high, the airline said. Flights to Europe are also burdened by new emissions charges and rising air passenger duty taxes in the U.K.

IT'S THE ECONOMY: Chief Executive Azran Osman-Rani said continued high jet fuel prices and weakening demand for air travel due to a depressed economy were a double-whammy for the carrier and made it "economically impossible" for the airline to sustain low fares to Europe.
