Hola blog readers, this is my first entry of hopefully many, to chronicle and pass on the experience of a gringo in Buenos Aires.I enjoyed blogging on a trip to china back in 2005 and you can also read those posts here I think as nothing seems to ever disappear once it is etched in the world wide web.
I left Canada on the evening of January3rd flying Air Canada (the peoples airline) through Toronto,Santiago Chile to Buenos Aires. Passing through Toronto I spend the time sipping and sitting in the Maple leaf loungs listening to the Canada/Russia hockey game and as the game got worse and worse for canada I thought that it seemed to mark a good time to leave the North before the collective downer and gnashing of teeth over the loss, coupled with the long dark winter. Everyone seems happier in the sunshine and win or lose there is always another cold cerveza around every corner.
The plane from TO to south america was a monster Boeing 777 carrying hundreds and hundreds of people in seats and pods all strapped down with not an empty seat on the plane. Everyone was quickly fed and watered
and then most of us tucked ourselves in with the tissue paper blankets and in my case noise cancelling headphones for the long night flight. Of course the watering part previously mentioned presents another problem with the need to pee or your seat row mates needing to pee so the restful night is often interrupted. No worries, once awake I watched Cowboys and Aliens on the viewer. Now for those of you who have not seen this one I won't spoil it, but let me just say it stretches one to the point of discomfort perhaps more than the tight seats and double didget flying times.Buenos Aires welcomes you with its hand out for 75 American dollars entry fee which seemed to cause a great deal of grumbling from the many passengers who did not know beforehand. All part of the struggle down here to get an economy under control and get those greenbacks that everyone still loves. I had been briefed before arriving about the Taxi situation so knew to stay away from the many touts trying to get your attention and went to the prepay taxi booths inside the terminal and found a very efficient and
courteous driver and staff and also my first real try at speakingf spanish and getting the result I hoped for and 'milagro' it worked getting me to my destination without detour or drama!I was met in my appartment by erica the daughter of the owner Nancy,a young latina beauty with a warm smile and very good english so in no time I had taken care of rent business, learned about the appartment and how things work or don't and received the single kiss on the cheek that everyone here uses for greeting and such and was sitting in silence in Argentina!!!
Ah but no time to sit around, I had things to do and a city to see so after a wash I was out into the hot afternoon to wander around my neighbourhood and the barrio of Recolleta.Tree lined streets and architecture that reminded me of Paris with wrought iron balconies and lots of stone work on the facades.I circled the area a few times along side streets filled with cafe's and little shops as well as santa fe a large street full of shoppers and cars. It was there I finally ran out of gas
and settled down on a pattion for a few beers and a steak and watched the world go by before heading back to my appartment and bed.Buenos noches amigosPhotos: 5
