What to do when you lose a big client | TechRepublic

January 28, 2013, 4:54 AM PST

Takeaway: If you have one or two big consulting contracts, here are five things to keep in mind when you eventually lose their business.

If you?re in the consulting business for any length of time, you?ll experience the vicissitudes of the feast or famine phenomenon. As you go through its ups and downs, sooner or later one of those downs will take you by surprise. When a large contract suddenly goes away or gets drastically reduced, you might find it hard to pay the bills. You could even begin to wonder whether you can make it as a consultant after all. Here are some things to remember.

Don?t panic

If you don?t have other prospects already lined up, you could find this situation rather frightening. You might want to jump at the first thing that comes along, or even leave consulting for the supposed security of a salaried position. You might think about drastically slashing your rates in order to quickly attract new business. Keep your head cool and think about what?s best for your business. You don?t want to find yourself a year from now slaving on low-paying projects that keep you too busy to find anything better. The skills that got you the client you just lost will help you find others.

Don?t blame yourself

This event can easily become the entrance theme for a magnum performance by the Impostor Syndrome. Some of his best lines include:

  • If you were for real, you would have kept that client.
  • They dropped you because they finally saw through you.
  • You allowed your skills to stagnate, so now you won?t be able to find new work.
  • It?s time you quit pretending to know what you?re doing.

Those are all BS. The truth is that nobody knows everything about their job, especially in IT. We?re all learning all the time, just to do our jobs. We can?t keep up with everything in the field, so there will always be some domain of knowledge about which we think, ?I should have already learned about that.? Even though that may be true, beating yourself up about it isn?t going to help. It will only paralyze you.

Analyze your mistakes

Without blaming yourself, think about whether there were things you might have done differently to keep the client. Then ask yourself whether that is likely to apply to other clients as well. We can all stand to improve ourselves in one way or another. We may need to learn new skills, or work on our interpersonal communications. Did you fail to remove some false dilemma that made the client think that they either had to let you go or suffer some worse consequence? Did you miss or ignore any warning signs that this was about to happen? It?s always good to examine ourselves for the cause of our difficulties, but don?t forget that sometimes circumstances have nothing to do with anything we did or could have done.

Find new work

Even though you may feel compelled to work extra hard for your remaining clients, you probably need to set aside some time to deliberately seek new business. If you try to make up your losses on your existing clients, you may overburden their budgets and create problems in those relationships. When looking for new work, keep a cool head. Desperation doesn?t sell. Stick to your proven methods of finding work, or innovate thoughtfully ? but don?t grasp at straws.

Prepare for the next time

These downtimes are never fun. Wouldn?t it be nice if you could ride through them more comfortably? There are at least two things that you should do. First, set aside some money on a regular basis in a fund specifically designated for getting through these rainy days. Second, keep your client base diverse. If each client is only a small fraction of your business, then losing one or even two at the same time becomes a speed bump instead of a ?bridge out ahead!?

Conclusion

A dozen years ago I lost a client who had been with me for ten years, and who at the time accounted for almost 50% of my business. I didn?t recover quickly. It took years to build my revenue again by piecing together smaller contracts. I had become too comfortable with that regular chunk of income every month.

How about you? Do you have one or two big contracts that are making you complacent? What could you do to soften the blow when they eventually go away?

Get a great deal on your meeting space - Business Management Daily

meeting venueIf you want to get the most for your money when booking meeting or event space, you need to negotiate, says Anthony Coyle-Dowling, director of sales with Zibrant. Don?t just accept the price you?ve always paid for the place you usually use or take the first price you?re quoted at a new location.

  • Start with research. Review your spending and usage patterns for places you?ve booked in the past. Then identify mistakes that may have cost you money and build a list of preferred suppliers with prearranged rates, terms and conditions.
  • Establish priorities. Think about how your space needs will change in the coming year and consider how those changes will affect your requirements for locations, room sizes, Wi-Fi, parking and quality of venues.
  • Consider a variety of locations. Don?t dismiss properties you?ve rejected in the past. Be aware they are frequently updated and keen to attract new business. New venues may also be eager to establish a client base.
  • Think of ways to save. Venues value volume, so if you can do a variety of events at one location you?ll get a better price. If you can get a good deal that fits your needs, you can benefit in other ways from establishing an ongoing relationship.
  • Add accommodations. Taking a block of rooms in addition to meeting space can add additional savings.
  • Mention added-value items. These include Wi-Fi, parking, food and drink.
  • Look at cancellation contingencies. You want to secure good cancellation terms from the start.
  • Discuss AV and other equipment. These can add a lot to your bill, so take them into account in negotiations.
  • Think about your full spend. Don?t just try to get the best rate on bits and pieces of your booking, think about the package as a whole.
  • Go back and forth with offers. Be fair, but go back and forth to get the best deal you can negotiate. Don?t be afraid to go back after the deal is set if you get an offer of better terms elsewhere.

Interview: Adam Kolbrenner (Madhouse Entertainment) ? Part 6 ...

This week, we are fortunate to have as our guest manager-producer Adam Kolbrenner from Madhouse Entertainment, an L.A.-based production and literary management company that works with screenwriters and writer/directors in the areas of film, television and new media.

I will be posting the whole interview over the course of the week. Today in Part 6, Adam reveals what he is looking for when he reads a script and in a prospective writer client.

Now let?s look at what you do through the eyes of an aspiring screenwriter. How do you go about the process of surfacing a new talented writer?

It?s all about that one script that?s a calling card.? If you don?t have it but ask to meet people or just ?get out there? Madhouse is not the right representative.? I think you might require something more like a dating service.? If you can?t fundamentally write the script that will define you, perhaps you should choose another profession.? When we do have that script, the world is yours.

What specifically are you looking for when you read a script from a potential writer client?

Voice.? Characters.? Plot that we did not see coming.? Dialogue that is not derivative of what we?ve seen on screen before.? If I?m on page 1 of a cop thriller and the cliches start to pop up, say a character gives me: ?I?m too old for this shit? or ?The Mayor is on my ass already? I?ll be putting your script down on the ground.? Have you heard this line of dialogue in a movie from years ago?? You probably have, and it?s not yours to write again.

Let?s say you read a terrific script by a new writer. What?s your process in checking them out as a potential client? Are there certain types of personality traits or skill sets you?re looking for in addition to their writing talent?

Yes as I mentioned, great writing is 99% of what this business is.? But the other 99% is how hard are you willing to work for it.? (99+99 adds up right?).? If I meet a writer and he tells me how great that script is I just read and he asks me what I?m going to do to get it made, and THEN he?ll figure out what he?ll write next, I end the meeting there.? Don?t worry about what I?m going to do, worry about what YOU will do for your career as writer.? Go write.

Okay, so let?s further hypothesize you agree to represent this writer and they have this one great spec script they?ve written. It doesn?t immediately sell, but it?s a strong writing sample. How might you approach guiding this writer through their first six to twelve months in Hollywood? What opportunities might you be focusing on? How closely would you be working with them and what would that work look like?

Madhouse Boot camp.? For both of us actually.? We certainly look at opportunities out there in the marketplace that are realistic.? But, the reality is our boot camp is working together to determine what is going to be the next spec.? Why didn?t the first one sell?? Who knows.? But put it behind you and move on to the next.? Now people know your name.? What are you going to give them next?? That?s all they care about.

Does Madhouse Entertainment accept unsolicited submissions? Can writers submit loglines to you by email?

We get dozens of unsolicited emails a day.? It?s not cool and now I just delete them because while it might seem to a writer that sending an email first thing in the morning for representation is the best time to get a response, I get up in the morning and have at least 50 emails to start going through from clients and others around the world.? Delete.? So, Madhouse?s system can be found out online at our website:? www.madhouseent.net ? we look at every email there, all log lines, determine what sounds interesting and we go from there.? Lots more info and updates on twitter:? @madhouse_ent ? the website link is there as well to submit.

A few subjects that come up again and again. First what?s your advice on whether a writer should relocate to LA or stay where they are and write from there?

We represent plenty of writers that live all over the country.? When you?re starting out, working from anywhere is fine to an extent.? But, in order to be constantly in the game you need to be in Los Angeles.? It shows a more serious commitment to the craft. You meet plenty of other writers here, more opportunities open up and you feel connected.? You want to work on Wall Street, live in NYC.? You want to work in Hollywood, live in Hollywood.? If you don?t want to live in Los Angeles, at least move to Burbank.

Next would you generally advise aspiring writers to focus on one genre or to write whatever stories they want to pursue?

I think it?s vital for a writer to write in the lane that they want to write in for a long time.? I hear from new writers they have a comedy and a drama and a horror film and my head explodes.? Know who you are.? Look at the best screenwriters in the world.? Does David Koepp write the next Will Ferrell movie?? Does John August write Paranormal Activity 6?? They don?t cross genres, why should you?

One more: Should an aspiring screenwriter be more concerned about writing for the market or writing stories about which they are truly passionate, even if their content may fly in the face of Hollywood conventional wisdom?

This sort of wraps around to our whole conversation.? Good writing will rise to the top.? No matter what the story is. ?On the 2012 Black List Madhouse had everything from a 14th Century? movie about whaling, to a slave escape film, to a multi-generational road trip comedy, to a teen time travel adventure and more.? Passion is great.? But great storytelling and great writing wins.

If you had to estimate how many scripts you read a year, what would that total be? After reading so many scripts, do you still get excited about the possibility that this next one could be great? How do you sustain that positive energy?

Madhouse recently ran a contest that was basically a jelly bean count on all the scripts that were stacked behind my desk over a two year period.? (There?s a photo in Screenplay Magazine by Tom Benedek from a year or so ago).? I print every script and read them all.? The number in the script contest was exactly 2,897.? We read everything we can get my hands on.? I stay positive because I have to.? I substitute a classic novel or the great screenwriters (August, Koepp, etc) work in there from time to time to keep perspective.? Every time someone recommends a new writer to me, whether i?ve heard the name or not, I get excited.? I read everything by the following monday.? Always.? I don?t sit around.? Energy?? The Coffee Bean across the street from the Madhouse office and constant flow of interns running over there.

What?s the single most satisfying aspect of what you do as a literary manager?

Building lives and careers.?? Seeing our clients cash checks.? Seeing clients get married, have kids, build houses.? Seeing movies get made.

Finally what?s the one biggest piece of advice you can give to aspiring screenwriters?

Read everything.? Write more than everyone else.? Stay focused.? Don?t quit.? Don?t expect results from others, the only results come from when you type ?THE END? and send that script to the universe.? The universe will decide on the great ones.? Tip your bartenders and the valet guys because they might just have a great story idea for you.

That concludes this great interview with one of Hollywood?s most notable managers Adam Kolbrenner.

Please stop by comments to thank Adam for taking the time for the interview and post any follow-up questions you may have as he has agreed to answer them.

7 Triggers for Psychological Optimization of Websites | Internet ...

Do you know WHY your website needs to be psychologically optimized? When we optimize for psychology, sales go up, interaction & retention are enhanced and return visitors increase. If you?re doing e-commerce then you need every opportunity to increase your online sales. If your website is informational, you need people to remember you as a reference. If your website?s purpose is for education it?s important to stimulate the mind of the critical thinker.

When considering the psychology of your website, consider your purpose. There is no ?one size fits all? approach.

So let?s break website psychology down.

Color Psychology

Colors affect every decision we make, whether we know it or not. How we perceive a product, person or place is directly associated with the colors involved. Consciously or sub-consciously, colors play a role in our decisions. Colors effect our mood ? have you ever walked into a room that was dark and uncomfortable? It makes you want to leave immediately. This holds true with your website as well. If a visitor doesn?t feel comfortable, they will leave.

So it?s easy, you just have to find which colors mean what and put them in the design, Right? Not that easy?

Let?s use Orange as an example. Orange encourages ambition, fun times and warm energy, but when applied as a sales tool it makes products more attractive and look more affordable. If you have a call to action in Orange it will seem much more affordable and inviting then a call to action in Gold, which represents worth, loyalty and prestige. (Unless that?s what you?re going for)

All to often is the wrong color chosen for a web site. A color should be decided on based upon two key starting points. 1. Your target demographic 2. Your product/service.
If you have an existing logo, the color of the logo must be taken into consideration. The existing color must be incorporated with the correct density in the design, while still maintaining a balance with corresponding colors. (Which is another consideration you must address).

Color psychology is powerful when done correctly. It?s not an accident that Campbell?s soup has used the same colors continuously throughout their products life. I even bet when I mentioned that product you had a visual of the label pop up in you mind.

What about Coke, Pepsi, Google, 7UP, Nike, RedBull, Reese?s. These colors all play a role in how we perceive them.

So, once we have the colors, now what? What triggers us?

Psychological Triggers

We develop a Psycho-graphic profile which allows us to choose the color schemes. Psychological triggers, on the other hand, are used when developing our sales funnels in which we want those profiles to follow. It works both consciously or subconsciously, the proper use and placement of triggers will lead a customer through your website to the point of purchase.

If you recall the beginning of this document, I asked you ?Why does your website need to be psychologically optimized?? Do you know why I asked you that? Because humans are curious by nature. Asking ?why? stirs our curiosity stick so we delve deeper into a sites content. Searching for the answer.

?

The top 7 Psychological Triggers we can use are:

  1. BE SPECIFIC ? It?s important to be as specific as possible. Why? Because it makes your information more believable and credible.
  2. CURIOSITY ? We use this to lure viewers into content. It?s helps them discover the answer through their own efforts, even though we are not hiding anything from them to begin with.
  3. REASON WHY ? Why should people listen to you? Why should consumers buy from you? Why is what you?re offering going to make their life better?
  4. SCARCITY ? Simply put: we are more driven by the thought of
loosing something then by the thought of gaining something. ?Limited time offer?, ?Limited chances to win?, ?Buy before 4:00pm and win a fancy hat?
  5. FEAR ? Fear is a powerful trigger and controls the majority of our actions. The fear of Y2K had people frantically storing food, finding shelter and preparing for the end of the world.
  6. ENTHUSIASM ? Having positive energy when selling your product/service makes all the difference in the world. No one buys from a dull depressed pitch. The transfer of energy is crucial for consumers to believe in what they are committing to.
  7. TELLING THE TRUTH ? Sincere honesty gains you respect and credibility. All lies surface in time, but the truth will give you a concrete foundation that builds a relationship. People appreciate honesty, even when it?s not in their favor.
  8. Psychological optimization is just another key component that plays into the overall efforts put into web development. These tiny, yet large, decisions can mean the difference between profits and losses. We approach every website with these factors in mind. We go through the necessary research to properly evaluate who is visiting the site and how they will navigate through the site to arrive at a call to action. Each website is approached differently depending on it?s unique needs and how they pertain to the visitors.

As Pentagon Opens Up Combat Positions to Women Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Community Services Discuss Unique Needs of Female Combat Veterans

Female military service members and veterans face varied challenges when they return from active duty, like their male counterparts, but especially when it comes to issues of unemployment, homelessness and sexual traumas. As the Pentagon announced yesterday its decision to formally open up combat positions to women, representatives from Dixon Center and it?s partner Easter Seals commend the policy move and express urgency about the unique needs women veterans face upon returning home from military service.

Chicago (PRWEB) January 24, 2013

Female military service members and veterans face varied challenges when they return from active duty, like their male counterparts, but especially when it comes to issues of unemployment, homelessness and sexual traumas. As the Pentagon announced yesterday its decision to formally open up combat positions to women, representatives from Dixon Center and it?s partner Easter Seals commend the policy move and express urgency about the unique needs women veterans face upon returning home from military service.

?For our nation, formally recognizing the fact women have been and are serving valiantly in combat roles for the past 11 years is appropriate,? says Kimberly Mitchell, Deputy Director, Dixon Center. ?I do look forward to the bold policy steps that will be taken recognizing the unique needs of all our service members regarding post traumatic stress, traumatic brain injuries, military sexual trauma and the military's proactive steps which previously have been reactive.?

Women are far more likely than men to have experienced a military sexual trauma. Women also make up the fastest growing population of homeless individuals today ? and they?re not alone; increasingly they bring their children with them.

Mitchell?s 17 years of service in the U.S. Navy included a commission as a Surface Warfare Officer, service aboard several surface Navy combat warships, and multiple shore tours in Washington, D.C. This evening, Mitchell will be participating in a panel discussion, ?Change and Challenges ? Women in Today?s Military,? at the Pritzker Military Library in Chicago, offering her insight and perspective.

?As a Navy veteran, I know women have been serving side by side their male counterparts for years. This is a watershed moment for our country and recognizes all of our service members? capabilities, valor and achievements,? adds Mitchell. ?Opening combat roles to females should not be lauded as a bold step but rather a normal progression towards equality. The military's mix of gender, races, creed, lifestyles, and backgrounds makes it a bellwether of society. This decision should not be used as an opportunity for demagoguery, but rather a chance to acknowledge our military's ability to fight and win our nations? wars.?

With this decision, Mitchell along with Dixon Center and Easter Seals urge policymakers to collaborate with the myriad of resources in the civic and private sector, as well as support and dedicate resources to all military service members, veterans, their families and the families of our fallen when they return home from their deployments and where they live. Today?s service members ? women and men alike ? are making significant contributions to their communities but some face challenges during transition and reintegration. These challenges include physical wounds as well as isolation, exasperating emotional and psychological wounds. They face unemployment, families that are not always intact, and communities unable to meet their immediate and long-term needs.

?We need to consolidate local efforts in communities and find synergies for the delivery of services or to services. We as a society need to focus on enabling their potential, and not create more cookie cutter solutions. This is our mission at Dixon Center,? concludes Mitchell.

Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Community Services is a national clearinghouse launched in 2012. The Center is a catalyst for the consolidation of the disparate efforts underway since 9/11 that provide services to veterans, military service members, and their families. Dixon Center provides leadership to a nationwide network of support ? consisting of tens of thousands of organizations - for the delivery of services, or to services. Its team is led by Executive Director David W. Sutherland, Colonel US-Army, Retired. Easter Seals is Dixon Center's 501(c) 3 sponsor and is also one of its myriad partners that provide support and direct services to veterans and military families. Easter Seals is supporting Dixon Center to emerge and deliver on its bold mission. Dixon Center?s work will not be done until veterans and our military families can thrive; where they live. A plea deal John Kiriakou made with prosecutors required the judge to impose a sentence of two-and-a-half years. U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema said she would have given him much more time if she could.

Kiriakou's supporters describe him as a whistleblower who exposed aspects of the?CIA's?use of torture against detained terrorists. Prosecutors said his claim was laughable, given that the first public statements he made largely defended the?CIA's?use of waterboarding.

Kiriakou's 2007 interviews about the interrogations of al-Qaida terrorist Abu Zubaydah were among the first by a?CIA?insider confirming reports that several detainees had been waterboarded.

The 48-year-old pleaded guilty last year to violating the Intelligence Identities Protection Act. No one had been convicted under the law in 27 years.

Absent the plea deal, federal sentencing guidelines would have called for a prison term of at least eight years, which the judge said she would have imposed. She said she understood the government's desire to secure a deal, given the difficulties in holding a public trial for national security cases that invariably delve into classified evidence.

Kiriakou chose not to speak at Friday's hearing, to which Brinkema responded, "Perhaps you've already said too much."

Kiriakou did give a brief statement outside the courthouse after the hearing, thanking supporters.

"I come out of court positive, confident and optimistic," he said.

Kiriakou was an intelligence officer with the?CIA?from 1990 until 2004.

In 2002, he played a key role in the agency's capture of Abu Zubaydah in Pakistan. Abu Zubaydah, who was waterboarded by government interrogators, revealed information that exposed Khalid Sheikh Mohamed as the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Accounts conflict, though, over whether the waterboarding was helpful in gleaning intelligence from Abu Zubaydah, who was also interrogated conventionally.

Kiriakou, who did not participate in the waterboarding, expressed ambivalence in interviews about waterboarding, but he ultimately declared it was torture.

In court papers, prosecutors said the investigation of Kiriakou began in 2009 when authorities became alarmed after discovering that detainees at Guantanamo Bay possessed photographs of?CIA?and FBI personnel who had interrogated them. The investigation eventually led back to Kiriakou, according to a government affidavit.

Prosecutors said Kiriakou leaked the name of a covert operative to a journalist, who disclosed it to an investigator working for the lawyer of a Guantanamo detainee.

In previously sealed court papers that were made public late Thursday, Kiriakou's lawyers say that the journalist who him told about the covert officer was not actually a journalist but an investigator working for Guantanamo defense attorneys.

"Mr. Kiriakou now realizes that he made a very serious mistake in passing any information to Journalist A, but he would not have done so had he known how Journalist A would make use of that information," defense attorney Robert Trout wrote.

Prosecutors say that leak was one of many that Kiriakou made and that they simply lacked the resources to bring charges for all of the leaks.

Kiriakou was initially charged under the World War I-era Espionage Act, but those charges were dropped as part of a plea bargain.

Uganda again arrests leading opposition politician Besigye

KAMPALA (Reuters) - Leading opposition politician Kizza Besigye was arrested for planning anti-government riots in the Ugandan capital Kampala, police said on Saturday.

Besigye has led protests for years aimed at toppling President Yoweri Museveni, to whom he lost a presidential election in February 2011. He denounced that poll as fraudulent.

His supporters were at the forefront of widespread anti-government protests against the high cost of living in 2011 and, after a lull last year, they led demonstrations again in October and Besigye was arrested.

Besigye has lost three elections against Museveni, who has been in power for more than 26 years, and stepped down as leader of Uganda's biggest opposition party, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) last year, but is still a popular politician.

Earlier this week police banned opposition leaders from clearing up rubbish in Kampala's suburbs, saying it was a cover for staging public protests.

"Following attempts to unlawfully assemble and carry out riotous demonstrations ... Dr. Kizza Besigye has been arrested this morning," police said in a statement.

The opposition holds a range of grievances against Museveni, accusing him of seeking to be president for life as well as failing to tackle corruption and rights abuses.

Major western donors withheld aid to the east African country of 33 million people last month citing graft claims in the prime minister's office.

FDC secretary general, Alice Alaso, told Reuters Besigye had been arrested outside his home as he drove out.

Alaso said she visited Besigye at Kira police station, about 13 km (8 miles) from the city center, where he was being held.

Police stopped her giving him a bottle of water, she said.

"Their aim is to starve him ... how can you arrest someone when he has committed no crime?" she said.

Police did not say what charges they would bring against Besigye, who went for medical treatment in Kenya in 2011 after he was nearly blinded with chemical spray by police breaking up demonstrations.

Goggle-wearing rats learn predictive skills

Rats are sporting tiny, sci-fi-esque goggles in the name of science. The result: In addition to providing some pretty cute images, the fashionable rats have revealed that parts of the brain related to vision also help animals predict future rewards.

An animal's ability to predict events is vital for avoiding danger and obtaining basic resources, such as a rewarding drink of water. Though scientists had known rats had the ability to make predictions, they thought only higher cognitive areas were involved. Now a new study, to be published in February in the journal Neuron, reveals how the vision center of a rat's brain can learn to time when a reward is imminent.

While the study was in rats, it could prove to be a good model for how learning occurs in the human brain, too.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Winter's big chill means fewer summer bugs

As the bitter cold in the northeastern United States keeps even hardy New Hampshire skiers off the slopes, there?s at least one potential upside to the cold snap: fewer mosquitoes come summer, according to an entomologist riding out the cold in upstate New York.

    2. Brains vs. immunity: Genes hint at tug of war
    3. Study: Fracking wastewater could be too much
    4. Shrinking proton: Particle is smaller than thought

"This is a fantastic example of how the response of cells changes due to a behavioral paradigm," said theoretical neuroscientist Harel Shouval of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, who was not involved in the study but has worked previously with the researchers. "We can see the cells learning new behavior," he said.

Just as Pavlov's dog learned to associate the sound of a bell ringing with dinnertime, rats can learn to associate flashes of light with how long they must wait to receive a sip of water. Researchers outfitted rats with goggles that flashed a light in one of the animal's eyes to signal the rat to lick a spout in order to receive a drop of water.

A flash in one eye indicated a certain number of licks were required to release the water, while a flash in the other eye signaled that many more licks were necessary. The rats learned the connection between a signal to each eye and the licking time required. The researchers recorded the rats' brain activity using electrodes as the animals completed the task. Results showed, neurons in a vision center of the brain became active in response to one expected licking interval or the other, but not both.

Next, the researchers probed how this learning mechanism works. Nerves from a part of the rat brain known as the basal forebrain are thought to secrete the chemical acetylcholine into the brain's main vision center, also called the primary visual cortex, reinforcing connections that were recently active. When the scientists injected the rats with a neurotoxin that blocks those acetylcholine-releasing nerves, however, the rats' brains continued to remember the licking time for each signal, suggesting the acetylcholine and basal forebrain weren't needed to maintain those associations.

But then the scientists switched the visual cues, so a flash to the eye that signaled less licking now signaled more licking, and vice versa. Then they injected the neurotoxin into some rats but not others. The rats that didn't receive any neurotoxin learned the new association, but those that received the neurotoxin couldn't make the switch; their brains continued to remember the old mapping. The results indicate that the brain's primary vision area plays an important role in learning and relearning new associations.

There's more work to be done, says Shouval, but the findings strongly suggest that the primary visual cortex is not only sensory, but is involved in learning new behaviors as well.

Adopting a 15 & 16 year old - a little long - Adoption.com Forums

My husband and I are adopting two brothers, aged 15 & 16, out of foster care. They are precious guys! Just a little background information: I never wanted to adopt. I was happy with our daughter, an only child. However, I felt the Lord tugging at me and looked at an adoption website on April 12, 2011. I saw these two boys and felt God tell me they were going to be our sons. To make a VERY LONG story short, CPS took their sweet time, but my husband and I continued to fight and never gave up. CPS finally told the boys about us on October 16, 2012. We met them October 29, 2012. The oldest stayed the following weekend with us. The youngest decided he didn't want to be adopted. The oldest told us that weekend that he wanted to be adopted. He was to stay with us the following weekend. That Thursday, they were removed from their foster home for several reasons. The youngest decided to stay the weekend with us, too, mainly because he was removed from the foster home. They were moved into a respite foster home just five miles from our home. They previously lived about 90 miles away.

We got the boys every weekend and holiday including all of Thanksgiving. We picked them up every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for various church activities. The boys finally were placed in our home for adoption on December 14, 2012. We were thrilled! Both boys want to be adopted.

I realize they haven't been in our home long. They haven't even known of us for long. We had a year and a half to grow to love them, and I have to admit, I love them very deeply...unconditionally!! They are AMAZING young men, and we are very blessed to call them our sons. Right now, I am struggling with their lack of love for us, especially the oldest. The youngest has done a complete 180. He said he would never call us mom and dad...he started calling us mom and dad after being in our home for two days. He said he would never change his name...he wants to change his name to our last name. He never seemed happy or smiled before. He is ALWAYS happy now and smiles all the time. We also get lots and lots of hugs. The oldest is very happy, too. I just haven't seen as big a change in him. He is going to hyphenate his last name, and that's fine with us. We understand that.

While in the respite home, the boys created a FB page and contacted their biological parents, a big no-no per CPS. Instead of making them delete their account, we have allowed them to keep it as long as we have access to it. After all, they are teenagers and could very well go behind our backs and create another account that we wouldn't know about. We'd rather know than not know. They talk to their parents every now and then. We know they love their biological parents very much. Their mom is very supportive of the adoption. It's hard for me because I feel like I'm in competition with the biological family. It's especially hard right now because my husband is away on business for a month, and he hasn't been here to be my rock, and our daughter is away at college. So, it's been me and our two sons alone together for the first time.

I guess my question is this...how long does it take for teenagers to grow to love you? How long does it take for them to truly consider you their parents? Our adoption consummation is in April. Yippee! But I know that doesn't mean that we will be their parents in their hearts. I'm not naive, and I'm not expecting to be loved overnight. I'm just wondering how long it will take. Will they be adults before they truly realize how much we love and adore them? I tell them I love them. The youngest has begun to tell me he loves me, too. The oldest doesn't. Should I stop telling them I love them? Do you think it makes them uncomfortable if they don't feel the same way? I don't know what to do, and I don't want to push them away by loving them too much. Does that make sense?

Any help, advice and/or encouragement is greatly appreciated.

Microsoft virtual ecosystem aims to simulate world

4 hrs.

Microsoft Research is embarking on a highly ambitious project: A computational model of an entire ecosystem, from the soil itself to the creatures that live on it.

Such a comprehensive model would be useful not just to biologists, but to city planners and legislators, who could see concrete?predictions regarding things like deforestation and dams.

To model anything from nature properly is a monumental task, regardless of scale. A single atom, a single cell, or a single organism contains so much information and so many variables that it is effectively impossible to model them perfectly.

Modeling?an entire ecosystem with any accuracy, then, is a task of mind-boggling complexity. But not too long ago, so was sequencing the human genome, or simulating the way proteins form and fold in the molecular soup of our bodies. Drew Purves at Microsoft Research in Cambridge thinks the time has come for what the company describes as a General Ecosystem Model?(also known as GEM)?? capable of simulating just about any ecosystem in the world.

Purves wrote an article for the journal Nature announcing the?team's intentions, and calling for others to help out ? because it's not a small project. They've already created a prototype, called the Madingley Model, which is already more ambitious than anything out there.

"There are a huge number of ecological and environmental models, but in our opinion, nothing that is yet as comprehensive as a GEM would be," Purves told NBC News in an emailed statement. Models for certain areas of the ocean, or specific types of forests, already exist, but can't be adapted easily. He wants to make one that's powerful enough to be applied anywhere, from the deep ocean to the high desert; you'd just need to put in the correct parameters.

It wouldn't be perfect, but you?don't need a perfect model of something to make useful predictions: Tomorrow's weather, the effects of a drug, and the existence of subatomic particles like the Higgs Boson were all theorized from imperfect models. And Purves cautions that while the researchers' work has a broader range than anything out there, it's still missing a lot.

Even without simulating bacteria or the effects of certain features like streams, researchers can reach predictions that match up to the real world. A rise in temperature, for example, would kill off certain plants and cause others to thrive, which would affect the soil they live in, the herbivores that feed on them, and the carnivores that feed on them. It could all be simulated within the model.

But they still need data. Lots more data. Purves elaborates:?"What we are really missing is good data on the state of whole ecosystems... how much herbivore biomass there is in total, or, how many individuals of each size class?" After all, a thousand, big wildebeest may consume more grass than small ones, and seek out higher territories. And since every creature ends up recycled into the ecosystem again, every statistic is important to keep track of.

Purves hopes that the model will enable not just advances in science, but in policy as well. With a true model of a state or region's ecosystem, the effects of dams, runoff, climate change, and other things can be calculated objectively and included as part of the lawmaking discussion. On that front, the researchers are collaborating with the United Nations Environment Programme to help?hone?their work for political relevance.

It's a work in progress, but in a few years it could be a powerful resource for anyone looking into the effects of just about anything on the environment and its denizens. New updates to the project will be logged at the Computational Ecology and Environmental Science section of Microsoft Research.

India mulls raising taxes on the rich ? Chidambaram comments ...

Chidambaram 300x198 India mulls raising taxes on the rich Chidambaram comments ahead of budgetNEW DELHI/MUMBAI: India should consider the argument for higher taxes on the ?very rich?, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said in comments likely to fuel speculation about steps he may take in next month?s budget to boost tax flows and narrow a yawning fiscal gap.

In an offthe- record pre-budget meeting with Chidambaram and Finance Ministry officials on Jan. 7, some economists pressed for higher taxes on the rich to make sure they are paying their fair share, alarming business lobby groups that warn such a move would stifle growth.

The Indian finance minister?s comments come against the backdrop of a global debate, from the United States to France, about whether the very wealthy pay enough taxes. The growth rate of Asia?s third-largest economy is widely expected to slip to a decade-low in fiscal 2012/13 as the government grapples with ballooning budget and current account deficits and high inflation. Chidambaram wants to plug holes in the nation?s finances by cutting expenditure and increasing revenues through improved tax collection. ?I think we should have stability in tax rates but we should consider the argument that very rich should be asked to pay a little more on some occasions, but that is not the view I am expressing. That is simply the argument I have heard and I am repeating,? Chidambaram said in a TV interview aired yesterday.

Chidambaram offered no definition of the ?very rich?, but his comments are likely to please many in his centre-left Congress party who feel recent reforms to further liberalize the economy favor corporate India at the expense of the common man. The Congress party is facing a tough fight to hold on to power in a series of state elections this year and general elections due by May 2014. ?It is good electoral politics but economically doesn?t make sense,? said Venugopal Dhoot, who controls India?s diversified Videocon Group and ranks 38th in Forbes? India rich list with a net worth of $1.5 billion. It was not immediately clear if Chidambaram was referring to higher taxes on income, assets or capital gains in a regime that currently makes India a good place for the rich to live.

At present the top income tax rate is 30 percent, which applies to earnings above 1.0 million rupees ($18,500) a year. There are just 35 million taxpayers in a country of 1.2 billion people, and of them about 1.5 million declare annual earnings of more than 1.0 million rupees, according to the Finance Ministry. There is no inheritance tax, an issue Chidambaram raised as a concern after being appointed finance minister last August.

In 2009, his predecessor withdrew a 10 percent surcharge on the 30-percent rate paid on earnings above 1.0 million rupees. A government official with direct knowledge of the debate in the Finance Ministry said the focus is on plugging loopholes in the collection of income tax paid by individuals and companies. ?There are options of revisiting the inheritance tax and surcharge on income tax paid by the individuals,? the official said, declining to say if these were firm proposals on the table for the budget to be unveiled around the end of February. ?Even if they bring (back) the surcharge that will only add about 15-20 billion rupees, which is a drop in the ocean and will be lost in the decline of tax revenues that will arise due to lower compliance if tax rates are raised,? said Surjit Bhalla, chairman of advisory firm Oxus Investments.

India?s richest people tend to own businesses and other assets and thus have comparatively little exposure to salaries tax. Billionaire Mukesh Ambani, for example, was paid salary and perks of 150 million rupees ($2.8 million) in the last fiscal year by Reliance Industries, which he controls. According to Forbes, Ambani is worth $21 billion. Similarly, Azim Premji, founder of India?s No 3 software exporter, Wipro Ltd, and India?s third-richest person with a net worth of $1.2 billion, took home a salary and allowances of $84,696 in the last financial year, less than half of what the company?s chief financial officer was paid.

Premji said at a gathering of business leaders in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday that in principle he was not against higher taxes for the wealthy.? Reuters

What happens after you move forward with your Blueprint real estate ...

Based on conversations after the fact, many of our clients revealed that they had been reading Investing Architect for months (and in one case, over a year) before they decided to contact us to craft and execute their real estate investing Blueprint. This surprised me a little at first.

But after giving it some thought it all started to make a lot of sense. Before you take the step to contact someone like me, you have to come to two important conclusions. First, you have to decide that investing in real estate offers the most efficient path between where you are right now and where you aim to be at retirement compared to any other asset class. Then, after considering the plethora of options in the real estate investing spectrum, you have to decide that the Blueprint method we advocate is the one that? best aligns with your goals, risk profile and personality. As tall an order as that might be, the ?glue? that brings it all together is?trust.?After you decide that you will start investing in real estate and our strategy?speaks?to you unlike any other, you must be able to trust that with our help you will be able to execute a plan and bring the strategy to life.

So, just in case there are some of you who might be wondering what happens after you decide to move forward with our Blueprint real estate investing strategy, I thought I?d just tell you.

The Blueprint comes first

Everyone?s combination of financial goals, capital, income and time is unique so the very first thing we do is craft your Blueprint. For this you will need to provide some answers to our questions and then we can answer your most important questions in return. Namely, we need to know:

  • What is the main goal? (i.e retirement),
  • What income would accomplish it? (i.e. $75,000/year)
  • How long do we have to get there? (i.e 10-12 years)
  • How much capital do you have saved at this moment?
  • Based on your job income, what?s your savings rate? ( i.e $25,000/year)

If you don?t quite know the answers to those questions,? let this be an invitation to start thinking about them. Once we have those answers, here are the major questions we can answer for you:

  • How many properties you will need to acquire during your asset accumulation stage?
  • How much liquid capital it will take to acquire those properties?
  • How long will it take you to complete the acquisitions based on your current level of capital and your savings rate?
  • How long your capital growth stage will take using just the positive cashflow from the properties?
  • If that will take too long, how much you will need to contribute from your job income to pay off the properties in the time we have till retirement?
  • How to allocate your porfolio between standard and premium assets based on your investment timeframe?

Financing and commitment

Now that we have our ?roadmap?, we have to get ready for the trip. Before we go about the business of acquiring investment properties we connect you with our investment property specialist Lender. You aren?t obligated to use them after the pre-approval is done but after you speak with this pro you will understand why nearly 100% of our clients opt to finance their investment properties with this Lender. Once the preapproval letter has been issued, we are almost ready to start looking. Also at this stage,? paperwork is drafted, reviewed and signed that establishes the client-agent relationship. We commit to help you achieve your goals and you commit to working exclusively with us.

Potential properties and? acquisition

Now the fun part begins. We research hundreds of potential investment properties daily then distill that list down to about thirty contenders. At this point we run a market analysis on each property to find out what the incoming rent would be if we were to acquire it and what is the current market value for sale. What follows is an in depth cash flow analysis that projects the positive cashflow, capitalization rate and cash on cash return at Year 1. Then, it tells us how the property will perform throughout the investment timeframe and what your internal rate of return is during that time. When a property satisfies our high minimum standards and it?s a good fit for your portfolio, we will forward our research to you along with general property information and lots of photographs. After this, if you are a local investor, we would schedule a time to tour the property. Photoshop is a hell of a software so boots on the ground on every property our clients buy are mandatory. If instead you?re one of our out of state investors, we could shoot a video walkthrough of the property and send it to you. This process may take some time and will require some patience because Houston is the hottest real estate market for investors after all. But when that right property comes along, we pull the trigger and start negotiations right away. We go into those negotiations a strong pre-approved Buyer and that enhances our chances of success.

Hope that gives you an idea of what?s around the bend when you decide to move forward with your Blueprint real estate investing strategy. If there?s other questions or concerns you might have, ask away in the comments below, email me or call my cell at 713.922.2702.

Is SEO Affected by Social Media? - Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine

(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) ? ?The short answer to the title of this article?s question is: Yes. As with most things your business does on the internet, social media sites contribute at least in part to your overall search engine optimization (SEO). In most of our other articles on the topic of SEO, we delve into the subject of how to use keywords and cross-linking to improve the search ranking of your company?s website. In fact, we even hosted a webinar on the topic just last month:?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNdyLC4730g.

However, a fairly recent development in search engines is the inclusion of social media sites into their search algorithms. This development should not only be motivation for re-strategizing your company?s SEO plan, but it should also motivate you to better utilize your social media presence. With social content now being a factor, you should be trying to produce more shareable content in your networks. Since this is still such a new area for search, it is important to stay on top of how it may still evolve or change. For now, it is important to understand the new relationship SEO has with social media, and how your site can benefit from it.

Include links?to your social media pages on your actual business website, to grow your network in those areas. Conversely, your social media pages should of course link back to the main website.

Write keyword-rich content?wherever is appropriate on your social pages, such as the Twitter bio or Facebook information section. By using the same keyword strategy that you would use for the actual website, it will ensure that your social media presence is high-ranking in search results as well.

Publish highly-shareable content?to your social media networks. If this content is tied to your website, the sharing satisfies one of the basic rules of SEO, which is to have multiple websites linking back to your website. If something from your business is highly shared, you have more backlinks boosting your SEO.
