Microsoft is seemingly making a big push to integrate gesture and touch functions into its products, as indicated by the recent previews for Windows 8 and the release of its Touch Mouse. Logitech has taken the hint, releasing its own brand of mouse, the Wireless Touchpad ($50 direct), to satisfy the touch market for PC users.
The Wireless Touchpad may bring to mind a certain Apple Magic Trackpad that was launched just last year. Though the Touchpad isn't quite as chic, it offers up to 5 inches of touch real-estate to scroll, swipe, and pinch-zoom to your heart's content: one finger moves the cursor, two fingers allows scrolling, three fingers swiped horizontally moves through photos, and four fingers swiped horizontally switches to a different application. A physical right and left-click button have been included in case you don't want to completely give yourself up to the one-finger touch tap.
The touchpad connects wirelessly via a USB dongle inserted into your PC. It transmits information over 2.4GHz, a standard among wireless devices. The dongle also has Logitech's Unifying technology built in. This feature allows you to connect up to five other Logitech peripherals to one USB dongle, rather than two USB receivers taking up space in order for you to use your mouse and keyboard.
There does seem to be SetPoint configuration software available for the Wireless Touchpad, but it's unclear if it will be as extensive as customizing your own gestures or as basic as setting the cursor's sensitivity.
