Mitt Romney wins big in Florida primary, retakes lead for nomination

Early reports in the Florida primary show that Mitt Romney has a double-digit lead on Newt Gingrich. Romney's organization and improved debate performances appeared to be decisive.

Mitt Romney won the Florida primary handily Tuesday, reasserting his status as front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination.

With 67 percent of the results reported, Mr. Romney had 47 percent of the vote. Newt Gingrich was second with 31 percent, Rick Santorum was third with 13 percent, and Ron Paul fourth with 7 percent.

Romney?s big victory marks a sharp reversal for Mr. Gingrich, the former speaker of the House, who just 10 days ago won the South Carolina primary by nearly 13 points.

Romney?s strong debate performances last week, in which he pounded on the former House speaker over his tumultuous speakership and consulting work for mortgage giant Freddie Mac, proved to be crucial. According to early exit polls, about two-thirds of Florida primary voters cited the debates as important in how they voted.

Florida, the fourth largest state in the country, is by far the biggest prize to date, with 50 GOP convention delegates at stake. In some ways, Florida is a microcosm of the country, with large minority populations and residents who have moved here from all over the United States. Romney?s victory portends an ability to play to varied crowds in future primaries.

The exit polls show about 45 percent of Florida GOP voters said that the ability to defeat President Obama was the most important quality in a candidate. The top issue was the economy, selected by 60 percent of voters.

Despite Romney?s resounding victory in Florida, the three other candidates in the race all say they?ll continue to compete.

On Tuesday, before the polls closed, Gingrich promised to remain in the race ?probably six months ? [until] probably June or July ? unless?Mitt Romney?drops out earlier.??

Mr. Santorum, a former senator from Pennsylvania and winner of the Iowa caucuses, has a strong following among social conservatives.?

Congressman Paul from Texas is well-funded and has a devoted following among young voters and libertarians.

Paul did not campaign in Florida, focusing instead on the next contests in Maine, Nevada, and Colorado. Santorum left Florida early, and missed some days of campaigning when his young disabled daughter fell seriously ill. After her situation stabilized, Santorum resumed his campaign in Colorado and Nevada.

The biggest lesson of Florida may be that money and organization really do matter in a large state. Before the Florida primary, a candidate with time to go county by county and shake a lot of hands could do well; that?s how Santorum won the Iowa caucuses. In the Sunshine State, that?s not enough.

Given Florida?s 19 million people and 10 media markets, Romney was the only candidate with the resources and staff to compete comfortably statewide. Gingrich also had the support of a well-funded super political-action committee, which aired ads in the state. But that wasn?t enough to help the former speaker overcome Romney?s attacks in the debates and on the airwaves.

Indeed, Romney likely owes his victory in Florida more than anything to the two debates here. Romney encountered some bumps last week when he released his tax returns, revealing a low effective tax rate, accounts in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland (on which he paid US taxes), and significant donations to the Mormon church.?

But the fact that Romney is extremely wealthy was not news, and for now, nothing untoward in his finances has emerged.

First Lady Pushes Jay Leno to Eat Healthy (Time.com)

p> (BURBANK) -- Jay ate the veggies.

First lady Michelle Obama cajoled Jay Leno into nibbling on apples, sweet potato fries and a pizza made with eggplant, green peppers and zucchini on the "Tonight Show," breaking his long-held aversion for all-things-healthy in his diet.

Leno once told a magazine he hadn't eaten a vegetable since 1969, and he insisted he tasted his last apple in 1984. That didn't dissuade the first lady, who's promoting her "Let's Move!" campaign to get kids excited about fitness and healthy eating habits. (See photos behind the scenes with Jay Leno.)

Earlier, Obama poked at him in a Twitter post, hinting she'd "get Jay to eat some veggies" on the NBC show.

He did.

"That does smell very good. I assume this is sausage-pepperoni," the comedian quipped as he eyed the pizza made with a whole-wheat crust.

She convinced Leno to dip an apple in honey made from beehives in the White House garden: "It will help it go down easier," she assured him.

"White House honey? That sounds bad," Leno told her. "You know, with a different president that could mean a whole different thing, 'a little White House honey.'" (See photos of Michelle Obama's best fashion moments.)

The first lady is on a two-day swing through California where she'll promote her initiative while attending two events to help Democrats raise money for the upcoming elections.

She told Leno she's not doing anything special to prepare for what's expected to be a tough re-election campaign for her husband, President Barack Obama.

"You know, there's really no way to mentally prepare for it. You take each day as it comes," she said.

Republican Mitt Romney has been ridiculing the White House and might face the president in November, but the first lady graded the former Massachusetts governor's singing voice with something like a sly endorsement. Romney surprised supporters in Florida with an on-pitch version of "America the Beautiful" on Monday, and Leno asked the first lady for her opinion. (See more on the First Lady's healthy food initiative.)

"It's beautiful," she said after a pregnant pause, with a laugh and raised eyebrows. "And it is America's song, and it's a song that's meant to be sung by every American," the first lady said in a taped appearance for the NBC show.

Leno told her, "That is right, regardless of political affiliation."

But she swooned over her husband's singing -- Obama took a brief turn as a soul singer earlier this month at a New York fundraiser, crooning a bar from an Al Green classic. She says he does a little Marvin Gay, too.

"He does have a beautiful voice, and he sings to me all the time," she told Leno.

South Korea, Japan want U.S. to detail Iran sanctions (Reuters)

TOKYO/SEOUL (Reuters) ? South Korea and Japan will soon meet U.S. officials in Washington to ask how much oil they can import from Iran under new sanctions that leave the Asian nations with few alternative sources for energy, government officials said Wednesday.

Japan is the world's third biggest oil consumer, and South Korea is the fifth largest.

Both nations import significant amounts of crude from Iran, which they are under pressure to cut back to secure a waiver from a U.S. law imposing sanctions on financial institutions that trade with Iran's central bank.

Japan's foreign ministry said a delegation was due to hold talks in Washington Thursday as part of ongoing consultations and would seek clarity on the law, which is part of a raft of sanctions aimed at reining in Iran's nuclear ambitions.

"We don't know what the Americans want until we hold the meeting," a government official said.

The official said Japan would explain the nature of its trade with Iran, as well as ask the United States to exempt Japanese banks from sanctions. No concrete steps are expected to be agreed upon, he added.

South Korea's foreign ministry said a technical team was planning to visit the United States to discuss the Iranian sanctions, but would not give details about the trip.

Kurt Campbell, the top U.S. diplomat for East Asian Affairs, told reporters in Seoul the United States was keen to discuss the specifics of its sanctions with Japan and Korea soon.

"We welcome a prospective South Korean team coming to Washington to discuss specific aspects of various energy related and financial interactions between South Korea and Iran," he said.

"We want to work closely with countries like South Korea and Japan who have particular vulnerabilities in this regard."

South Korea, a key U.S. ally, has warned the United States it would have difficulty replacing Iranian crude supplies.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak will visit major oil producers Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates next week to try and secure alternative sources of energy.

Afghan in army uniform kills NATO service member (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? A man wearing an Afghan army uniform shot and killed a NATO service member, the international military coalition said Wednesday, the latest in a rising number of similar attacks.

NATO did not provide any other details about the killing, which took place on Tuesday in southern Afghanistan.

It was the fourth time since Dec. 28 that an Afghan soldier ? or an insurgent posing as one ? has turned his weapon on the international troops working to train the national security forces.

After an Afghan soldier killed four French soldiers on Jan. 20, French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced that France would speed up the exit of its troops from Afghanistan and that it would ask NATO to hand over all combat operations to Afghan forces in 2013 instead of by the end of 2014.

The Pentagon has said that while the number of cases of Afghans killing their international partners is rising, it does not appear to be a widespread problem. Tuesday's attack brought to 34 the number of international troops killed in Afghanistan this year.
