Key players in Pakistan's upcoming election

A look at several key players in Pakistan's upcoming national election that is expected in May:

?PRESIDENT ASIF ALI ZARDARI: The president rode to power on a wave of sympathy following the 2007 assassination of his wife, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, but his tenure has been turbulent and he has long been plagued by allegations of corruption. Zardari will not be participating in the upcoming election, but as co-head of the Pakistan People's Party, which led the last government, he will be a key figure. His unpopularity and anger over the performance of the government during its five-year term could damage the party's run in the upcoming election. The economy is stuttering, energy shortages plague the country and Taliban militants continue to stage deadly attacks.

?BILAWAL BHUTTO ZARDARI: The only son of the president and his late wife, he is set to carry the torch for the Bhutto family political dynasty in Pakistan. His grandfather, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founded the PPP and served as the country's president and prime minister. He is too young to participate in the upcoming election ? the minimum age is 25 ? but will likely play a key role as co-head of the PPP with his father. It remains to be seen how well the Oxford-educated youth can rally the party's largely poor, rural constituency in southern Sindh province since he has lived most of his life outside the country and is still working on his command of Urdu, the national language.

?NAWAZ SHARIF: The head of the main opposition party, the Pakistan Muslim League-N, hopes to become prime minister for the third time. His party, which appeals to an industrialist base and is strongest in central Punjab province, is the PPP's main rival to form the next government. Sharif was ousted as prime minister in a bloodless coup in 1999 by Gen. Pervez Musharraf and was sent into exile the following year. He and Bhutto returned to Pakistan in 2007 to lead their parties in the 2008 elections. Bhutto was killed before the elections were held.

?IMRAN KHAN: Khan is a Pakistani cricket legend-turned-politician who could have a significant impact on the upcoming election. He founded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or the Movement for Justice Party, more than 15 years ago, but failed to gain much traction until 2011. That year he marked his rise as a major political player with a rally that drew more than 100,000 people in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province. Khan has appealed to a largely young, urban constituency tired with the current crop of politicians and the corruption that plagues the system. Analysts doubt his party can win enough seats to form the next government, but it could steal key votes away from the PML-N and the PPP, especially in Punjab, and that could affect who wins.

Scientists test skeletons for Black Death bacteria

LONDON (AP) ? Scientists digging a new railway in London have uncovered 13 skeletons that will be tested to see if they died from the Black Death plague in the 14th century.

The lead archaeologist of the Crossrail project, Jay Carver, says the location of the bodies and historical records suggest that the skeletons were found in a burial ground that opened at the start of the plague. Carver says scientists will study the bones to establish cause of death, and hope to map the DNA signature of the plague bacteria.

The plague began ravaging Europe in 1347, spreading quickly and killing an estimated 30 percent to 60 percent of the European population. Some 75 million people in all are believed to have died in the four-year pandemic, including 25 million Europeans.

Pet Shop Boys switch labels for new 'Electric' album

LONDON (Reuters) - Pet Shop Boys have left the record label Parlophone after 28 years and will release their new studio album "Electric" through independent music publisher Kobalt in June, the British duo said on Thursday.

The chart-toppers, whose 1980s hits include "West End Girls" and "It's A Sin", said further details of their 12th studio album would be released soon.

The move by the duo, who have sold 50 million records worldwide since getting together 32 years ago, comes a month after it was announced that Parlophone was being sold to Warner Music.

Parlophone was previously one of EMI's most prized assets but Vivendi's Universal Music Group agreed last year to sell the label to satisfy European regulators over its $1.9 billion purchase of EMI's recorded music business.

The Pet Shop Boys said when they signed with Parlophone, whose artists also include Coldplay, they had no idea how long or how successful the relationship would be.

"However it is also exciting now to commence a new phase working with a new team in a new business structure and we look forward to a creative and equally fulfilling relationship with Kobalt," bandmates Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe said in a statement on their website.

Kobalt is a fast-growing independent music publisher set up in 2000 by Swedish businessman Willard Ahdritz who established a new publishing model to release and market records while giving the musicians greater control and ownership of their work.

The label's first international album release, "Push The Sky Away" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, debuted this year at No. 1 in seven countries and in the top four in 13 other countries.

UK study: Violence more likely among vets, troops

(AP) ? Young men who have served in the British military are about three times more likely than civilians to have committed a violent offense, researchers reported Friday in a study that explores the roots of such behavior.

The research found that merely being sent to Iraq or Afghanistan made no difference in rates of violent crime later on. Instead, a key predictor was violent behavior before enlisting. Combat duty also raised the risk, as did witnessing traumatic events during deployment or misusing alcohol afterward. Still, the vast majority ? 94 percent ? of British military staff who return home after serving in a combat zone don't commit any crimes, researchers told reporters at a briefing.

The study found little difference in the lifetime rates of violent offenses between military personnel and civilian populations at age 46 ? 11 percent versus almost 9 percent. Among younger men, however, being in the military seemed to make a difference: Nearly 21 percent of the military group under age 30 had a conviction for a violent offense in their lifetime compared to fewer than 7 percent of similarly aged men in the general population, according to British crime statistics.

"The problem is that some of the qualities you want in a soldier are the same ones that get people arrested for violent behavior," said Walter Busuttil, director of medical services for Combat Stress, a British veterans' charity that was not part of the study. Busuttil said many of those recruited into the army are from disadvantaged backgrounds where violence is more common.

The research was published online Friday in the journal Lancet. Researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London looked at data from more than 13,800 U.K. military personnel and veterans and compared that to records of violent crimes ranging from verbal threats to assaults and homicides. Some people were followed for up to seven years. Nearly 1,500 women were included, though they were mostly in noncombat roles.

Deirdre MacManus, the study's lead author, said combat experience seemed to matter when they compared violent crime rates among military personnel. "Being deployed in itself wasn't a risk factor for violent offenses but being exposed to multiple traumas, like seeing someone get shot, increased the risk by 70 to 80 percent," she said, compared to someone who hadn't witnessed such a harrowing ordeal.

Researchers said other studies have made similar findings.

Britain currently has some 5,000 soldiers in the NATO-led mission fighting in Afghanistan and it is the second-largest foreign contingent after the U.S. It withdrew its soldiers from Iraq in 2009 after six years. The U.K. Ministry of Defense has been under pressure to develop more mental health programs for veterans after reports of returning servicemen committing crimes, like the 2012 case of an ex-soldier in Leeds jailed for shooting his landlady after fighting in Afghanistan. He had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder but had not been monitored or treated.

In the U.S., there have been numerous cases of veterans committing violent crimes, including a Marine charged with killing six people in California last year. Soldiers from a single Army unit in Colorado killed 11 people over a few years after their return home. An Army report in 2009 placed part of the blame on the psychological trauma of fierce combat in Iraq. And this week, a U.S. Senate panel heard women in the military describe sexual assaults by fellow soldiers.

American researchers said it is possible the same links the British study found between fighting in a war and violent crime exist in the U.S. but that there isn't enough data yet.

"For some soldiers, it's hard to stop being a warrior," said Brett Litz, a psychology professor at Boston University who studies veterans' issues. "What happens during a war may be a prescription for a small percentage of men to get into trouble," he said. "They may find it very difficult to switch out of a wartime mindset."

But given the differences between Britain and the U.S., Litz said it was impossible to predict what effects would be seen in the United States. "Maybe the economy is better here, maybe the (department of defense) does a better job with transition, maybe (the) culture is different especially with respect to alcohol," Litz said.

"There will be a lot of returning soldiers who have to be reintegrated and unfortunately there is no quick fix," he said.

Jelly Bean pushing out for Verizon Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and 7

Verizon Galaxy Tab 2 7

After the initial Jelly Bean rollout for non-carrier branded devices, Veizon's Galaxy Tab 2 family is now getting its chance at some Jelly Bean goodness. This over the air update has been officially live for a few days, and it seems that a significant amount of users are finally getting the update pushed to their tablets. One of the biggest new features that comes packaged with this version of Android is Google Now, along with improved performance thanks to Project Butter. 7" Tab owners also get a new keyboard and updated softkeys, while those with a 10.1" Tab will now see lockscreen icons and an improved notification panel. For a full list of changes, see Verizon's official pages for the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1.

If you haven't already gotten the update notification manually, go to Settings in your tablet and tap on About Device, then System updates. You can't get this update while roaming, so connect to WiFi if needed. Is this update a huge improvement? Does it break anything? Let us know in the forums!

Thanks, mordoc!

Rick Rule: Gold Fear Trade, Silver Greed Trade, Platinum Math ...

In his latest interview, Rick Rule shares extraordinary insights based on four decades of investing in the resource markets. In this article, we picked out two topical and highly relevant questions that Rick Rule answers. First, is it wise to sell some gold and silver in order to move into platinum and palladium? Second, with (expected) inflation and real negative rates, is it smart to hold cash?

Is it wise to sell some gold or silver, and move into platinum & palladium?

?I would prefer that people sold US Treasuries. I like all forms of bullion. I love John Mauldin?s quote that you want to own things that the enemy can?t print. Certainly gold & silver constitute that.?

Rick Rule goes on to say that, if pushed, the best form of bullion in terms of price appreciation for the next one to two years is platinum and palladium. It is not because of the monetary aspects of it, but because the industry does not earn its cost of capital at this price point. On the supply side, there is no above ground inventory. There is only new mine supply. At this price point, new mine supply is falling. The biggest platinum & palladium producer in the world is South Africa. They have experienced a 19% production decline in six years because the industry is not profitable at this price point. They are facing labor cost inflation, tax inflation, capital inflation, power inflation ? all those costs have to go up, and the industry cannot pay them because do not make any money at these costs at this price. At the same time, demand is increasing; it is increasing because the utility of platinum and palladium at this price point is extraordinary. The trade-off is platinum versus smog. Society believes that it gets a great deal at this price point.

So it is important to know that platinum and palladium prices MUST go up, and prices CAN go up.

Listen to Rick Rule his full answer at this point in the interview

Which investments are still safe? Is it smart to own cash?

We believe this is such a key point that it is worth taking the time to think about his answer. ?I think you need to hold some cash, and you have to acquaint yourself with the fact that liquidity is a tool in turbulent markets.

You need to have some dollars [cash] knowing that you will lose two or three percent compounded, because if turbulence increases, cash will give you the means and the courage to take advantage of the mistakes that others will make in a 2008-style market. So the first thing is that you need to choke down the fact that you are losing money in a real sense, and need to hold some cash. It is an ugly lesson, but you have to do it.

The second thing is that some of that cash ought to be a store of value that is a medium of exchange. I cannot tell the individual speculator whether he or she should be long gold, silver or platinum. Traditionally, the fear trade (which is what I am interested in) is gold. The greed trade (which is what Eric Sprott is interested in) is silver. The math trade is platinum.

Great White Shark Protections Set To Go Into Effect In California

SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? Great white sharks off the coast of California will likely enjoy greater protection, as state officials consider whether to add the predator to California's list of endangered species.

The California Fish and Game Commission unanimously voted last month to advance the candidacy of the shark for inclusion on the state endangered species list. That means during a one-year study review the shark will receive the same protections as if it were listed as endangered.

The commission was expected to publish last month's decision on Friday, a move that would officially launch the protections, state wildlife officials said.

Great white sharks are internationally protected and already can't be targeted for catch. But the additional restrictions will also ban incidental takes by net fishermen.

"While targeted sport and commercial fishing for white shark has been banned in waters off California since the mid-1990s, there were some exceptions that allowed for incidental take and take associated with research activities," said Marci Yaremko, program manager for state and federal marine fisheries at the state department of fish and game.

Under the enhanced rules, researchers and gillnet fishermen will have to apply to the Department of Fish and Wildlife for permits to tag or accidentally capture a shark or risk criminal prosecution.

Gillnet fishermen have voiced opposition to the shark review, saying the shark population is not in jeopardy and greater protections are not needed.

The shark review is also expected to provide an estimate of the number of great white sharks in state waters.

Kerry: Egypt needs political, economic viability

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's bickering government and opposition need to create "a sense of political and economic viability," giving businesses confidence and setting the stage for a vital international aid deal, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Saturday.

Kerry stressed to business leaders the importance of Egyptians coming together around human rights, freedom and speech and religious tolerance. Equally essential, he said, is uniting "to meet the economic challenge of this particular moment."

Several hundred people protested outside the government offices where Kerry later met with Foreign Minister Amr Kamel. They burned Kerry's pictures and chanted that Washington was siding with President Mohammed Morsi's ruling Muslim Brotherhood.

Kerry arrived in Cairo, the latest stop on his first overseas trip as a member of President Barack Obama's second-term Cabinet, intending to press all sides to come to a basic agreement on Egypt's direction ahead of parliamentary elections that begin next month. A meeting with Morsi was set for Sunday.

Of great concern, too, is the ability of Egypt to undertake the reforms necessary to qualify for a $4.8 billion International Monetary Fund loan package. Steps could include increasing tax collections and curbing energy subsidies.

Agreement with the IMF, contingent on ending the political chaos that has ensued since Morsi's election, would unlock significant U.S. assistance, including portions of Obama's $1 billion pledge last April.

"It is paramount, essential, urgent," Kerry told business leaders, "that the Egyptian economy gets stronger, gets back on its feet and it's very clear that there is a circle of connections in how that can happen.

"To attract capital, to bring money back here, to give business the confidence to move forward, there has to be sense of security, there has to be a sense of political and economic viability."

After meeting with Kamel, Kerry spoke about how Egypt can surmount its challenges and become a strong and stable democracy, with a stable economy.

"I say with both humility and with a great deal of respect that getting there requires a genuine give-and-take among Egypt's political leaders and civil society groups just as we are continuing to struggle with that in our own country," Kerry told reporters.

"There must be a willingness on all sides to make meaningful compromises on the issues that matter most to all of the Egyptian people."

Earlier, Kerry said he would tell Morsi in their meeting that U.S. assistance would depend on Egyptian reforms and the IMF agreement.

"It is clear to us that the IMF arrangement needs to be reached and we need to give the market place some confidence," Kerry said.

The political turmoil has scared away tourists and foreign investors, eroding Egypt's foreign reserves by nearly two-thirds of what it was before the uprising. Those reserves, which stand at less than $14 billion, are needed to pay for subsidies that millions of poor Egyptians rely on for survival.

Kerry met with opposition figures before a round-table discussion with members of the business community. He described the first session as "very, very spirited."

According to the U.S. State Department, Kerry also spoke by telephone with Mohammed ElBaradei, a Nobel laureate who heads the National Salvation Front, an opposition coalition calling for an election boycott.

Kerry met with Amr Moussa, a former minister under ex-President Hosni Mubarak who's now aligned with the Salvation Front. Moussa, an ex-Arab League head, ran for president last summer.

A statement from Moussa's office said the two talked about how the U.S. could support Egypt economically.

Kerry's talks with the league's current leader, Nabil Elaraby, covered the uprising in Syria, where 70,000 people have died in fighting over nearly two years.

The Salvation Front says it could consider participating in elections if parts of a new constitution are changed, police stop using excessive force against protesters and if an inclusive government of the Christian minority, women, and liberals is formed.

They say now is not the time for elections that will further polarize the country while violent clashes continue to take place between protesters and security forces, further shaking the faltering economy.

They accuse Morsi and the Brotherhood of dominating power in Egypt, effectively stepping in to the same role as Mubarak and failing to carry out reforms while also seeking to instill a more religiously conservative system.

Morsi's administration and the Brotherhood say their opponents, who have trailed significantly behind Islamists in all elections since the uprising, are running away from the challenge of the ballot box and are trying to overturn democratic gains.

Egypt has been locked in political crisis for months amid successive waves of protests against Morsi that have turned into deadly clashes and rioting.

As Kerry was meeting with opposition figures, including some who have joined the election boycott, activists in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura say a 35-year-old protester was killed when an armored police vehicle crushed him to death during violent anti-Morsi protests before dawn on Saturday.

A 14-year-old boy was reported to be shot in the head and critically wounded.

In the restive Suez Canal city of Port Said, a police vehicle ran over five people Saturday after protesters marching along a main street refused to allow the car through.

Kerry's visit to Egypt is the sixth leg of a nine-nation trip through Europe and the Middle East.

PHHHOTO is a GIF-making iPad photo booth

A photo booth is a nice addition to any party, but when you combine one with an iPad and trendy animated GIFs, you'll have a line around the block trying to get in. PHHHOTO offers just that.

The service converts an ordinary iPad into a self-contained GIF production engine, courtesy of cloud storage and a little extra hardware. It uses the iPad's front-facing camera, so resolution won't be too hot, but the app provides a ringlight to to illuminate faces for a professional look.

Once you're in front of the camera, you activate the shutter and it takes a few pictures, sending them off to PHHHOTO's servers, where they are assembled into an animated GIF. The finished product is sent back to the iPad and stored online as well so it can be linked to, shared and so on.

The app is put out by HyperHyper, a "creative technology studio" based in New York and Los Angeles that made it for a holiday party and decided to take it a step further. The company is partnering with local services for rental and installation of the booth and lighting.

It costs 99 cents to activate the app, but parties will run you $10 per event (for as many photos as you'd like) ? or you can really shell out for a big event with custom colors and multiple iPads. At $999, though, it's not likely you'll be doing it for a friendly get-together.

Sure, you could probably find a free GIF-making app and cobble something together, but if you put a tip jar next to this photo booth, chances are you'll recoup your investment. PHHHOTO should be available in April.

Michelle Orange vs. the Philosopher Kings

A great cultural critic is a bit like a philosopher king. By reading him, we (the literate) give him dominion willingly, even gladly, over our thoughts. We read him because we want a leader, because the world is too big, the thoughts too many. He is superior in wisdom, but also subject to his own laws (the critic of language must, himself, use language well). He is precise (like James Wood), he is sensitive (like John Jeremiah Sullivan), he is righteous (like Ta-Nehisi Coates), he was blessed with ecstatic genius (like David Foster Wallace). He guides us with seeming benevolence, and we follow him, wherever in his mind he leads us.

That figure?that leader, that philosopher king?is also a particularly male one. I say this to the extent that I can (being female myself) without judgment of any sort: value or political or moral or rhetorical, or anything. There is not a practical circumstance in which this observation could matter, except to say that there are fewer women writing cultural criticism than men, and have been for a long time.

Michelle Orange?s new essay collection, This is Running for Your Life, brings that fact (and it is a fact) into the starkest light. But the implications of making that observation and stating that fact are murky. What do I mean by that, really? Am I saying that women have been underrepresented as cultural critics? And if I am saying that, whose fault is it? The editors'? The world's? What do men do that women do differently, or better, or worse, or can we even say? Orange is a woman, and an accomplished?at times, wondrous?writer, but by no means a household name. And so I ask, why?

Orange?s essays unspool more than they develop. Her most ambitious pieces?on fantasy and the female sex symbol; on fame and mortality; on photography and memory?rush past big ideas, then turn around and point out the highlights. In an essay on Beirut, Orange wanders the city?"a peanut-butter-colored, art deco suburb built up around crumbling mosques and churches"?directionless. She sees a mosque, which "appears blown from blue and gold glass, as though it were set down among a ragged sandbox city and could as easily topple or be taken away." She goes to the Virgin Megastore ("found on all tourist maps of Beirut"), "because it was adjacent to Martyrs' Square, the memorial I had hopelessly been stalking, fended off by an intimidating show of barricades and wire." The city is a large thing, you see, and Orange is small. She can only wander and hope that she bumps into something meaningful.

This brought something back to mind: I was unemployed for a period of time last year, just a couple of years out of college, and during that time I tried supporting myself as a freelance writer. I found myself feeling my way around in a similar manner?not in Beirut; in Brooklyn, but no less small- and lost-feeling. I've always felt that the arts and culture were in dialogue with one another, and that that dialogue is as serious and meaningful a thing as you could write about, but how to translate that feeling into a career I had no idea.

I sought out the advice of other, successful women. The best way to get assignments, I heard, was to pitch stories on war, politics, the economy. Those are the kind of stories that magazines need women to write; you'll have less competition among other women, and you're more likely to land on the cover. Avoid stories on food, family, or fashion: There's too much competition and too little seriousness there. I know nothing about war, politics, or the economy. I know a few things about fashion, a fair amount about food, and nothing about family except what being a daughter has taught me. Why, I wondered, was family not just as important as war? As respectable? As serious? As illuminating about our culture? I found a job before I could find the answers.

My favorite of Orange's essays is about family. In "One Senior Please," Orange visits her grandmother, Rita, at a nursing home in Nova Scotia. Rita struggled with the duties of being wife and mother, battled crippling depression, and reinvented herself as a world traveler following her husband's death. As a child, Rita maintained a distant relationship with Orange, but they grew closer in Orange's adulthood. The essay is framed by thoughts on air travel and its relation to mortality; the senior care system; death, life, and their overlap. In the course of the visit, Orange promises Rita that she will try to "tell her story," and sometime after that?while in the act of writing this essay, Orange tells us?she learns that Rita has died. She stares at her work. "Had I lied to her when I said I would tell her story? Does even trying amount to a sort of lie? Perhaps all I can offer is the setting down of a space, one whose highest aim is that you might roam, however elusively, within its borders."

One way to describe Orange's book is to say that it gives you a sense of the vastness of the modern world; another is to say that it reflects her confusion about it. Both are fair. Orange seems to be without ego in her writing, and terrifically vulnerable. (From the Beirut essay: " 'Is no one waiting for you?' I told him no, or rather yes????It's not Beirut's fault, I wanted to add. No one is waiting for me in general.") She writes to understand the world. In 2010, Orange wrote a review of the forgettable Justin Long-Drew Barrymore romantic comedy Going the Distance for Movieline that included the following dig at Long: "How a milky, affectless mook with half-formed features and a first day of kindergarten haircut might punch several classes above his weight is a mystery ? we are increasingly asked to accept onscreen." Long brought the review up on a talk show, and a month later, Orange wrote a nervous, 3,000-word piece for the Rumpus on writing negative criticism and the costs of the critical lifestyle that was much better than the review itself. Orange can be better at observing her own thoughts than she is at observing the world.

Certainty is exhausting. Orange?s abashment is refreshing. Sometimes while reading, I have visions of certain writers flexing their biceps at their desks; sometimes I hear the sound of chests bumping in midair. When they get lost in Beirut, it is the crux of their experience, and they fucking tell that story, like it's just that easy. But I like that Michelle Orange questions herself. I like that the things she experiences aren't inevitable. The unspooling of Orange's thoughts is what I loved most about reading This Is Running for Your Life, even if it did made her writing less muscular. A (female) friend of mine who'd also read the book said that it was like "listening to a good friend tell a story."

But the philosopher king is not our friend, he's our leader. The world he shows us is the world that is. But why is a cultural critic like a philosopher king? Why is she not like a docent in the world of thought? Why war, politics, and the economy? Why not grandmothers, movie stars, and boyfriends? Family, fame, and love? These questions transcend Michelle Orange, whose introspection is more powerful than her observation in the end. Although I wonder what kind of book she might have written if we all valued our private selves as highly as our public selves. But now my thoughts are getting away from me. Someone, lead me back.

JOHANNESBURG - An official at a South African gun collectors' club where Oscar Pistorius was a member says he steadily became an avid collector of firearms in his Olympic year. He says Pistorius bought a collection of pistols and shotguns, all American manufactured, his favorite.

John Beare, vice chairman of the Lowveld Firearm Collectors Association, told The Associated Press that Pistorius also purchased a semi-automatic rifle for his expanding collection at the end of 2012.

That coincided with the early stages of Pistorius' romance with Reeva Steenkamp, the model he shot and killed at his home in the early hours of Feb. 14.

Prosecutors have charged Pistorius with premeditated murder for killing Steenkamp with three of four shots fired from his 9 mm pistol. Pistorius said he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder.
