Watch Live: President to talk 'sequester' at meeting with governors

President Barack Obama on Monday is expected to implore the nation's governors to put pressure on Congress to avoid the sequester as Obama speaks to the nation's governors at the White House.

Members of the Obama administration, heads of federal agencies and others have been issuing severe warnings to Congress regarding the sequester-- $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts that will go into effect March 1 absent a budget. Warnings have been released threatening fewer responders to handle wildfires, reduced food safety inspection, less help for vulnerable Americans and on Friday, widespread flight delays and cancellations.

"Travelers should expect delays. Flights to major cities like New York, Chicago, San Francisco and others could experience delays up to 90 minutes during peak hours, because we have fewer controllers on staff. Delays in these major airports will ripple across the country," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told reporters at Friday's White House press briefing after announcing that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) plans massive furloughs and closing air traffic control towers if the sequester goes into effect.

The White House on Sunday night released state-by-state reports detailing what they say would be "devastating" impacts on each state as a result of the sequester, but the topic of the sequester was notably absent from Obama's speech Sunday night to the governors, who are in town for the National Governors Association's (NGA) annual winter meeting.

Instead, the president at the White House dinner struck an appreciative tone, commending the governors for steering their states through tough times.

Democratic Gov. Jack Markell of Delaware, chair of the NGA, followed Obama's address Sunday night by emphasizing the absence of politics from the night's celebration. "On this one night it?s a relief -- politics doesn?t drive the conversation. We don?t speak of partisan issues or presidential aspirations," Markell said.

But Markell did note the sequester.

"One thing for sure is certain -- you don?t let issues fester. You get to deal with education and health care, and even the sequester," Markell said to laughter and applause from the audience.

Republicans such as Speaker John Boehner have publicly stated their opposition to the sequester, though others have threatened they are willing to let it go into effect.

Some Republicans over the weekend continued to accuse the administration of exaggerating the sequester's impact.

"They have plenty of flexibility in terms of discretion on how they spend money. There are easy ways to cut this money that the American people will never feel," Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma said on Fox News Sunday.

The president is slated to address the governors at 11:05 a.m. ET from the White House State Dining Room. Vice President Joe Biden, First Lady Michelle Obama and Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden are also scheduled to speak.

'Vampires' attack penguin chicks

Watch the bats feeding on the unsuspecting birds.

Documentary makers have filmed vampire bats preying on Humboldt penguin chicks.

The team travelled to the outskirts of the Atacama Desert in Peru to record how the penguins interacted with other species.

Despite anecdotal evidence of the bats attacking penguins, the behaviour had never been recorded before.

The extraordinary footage features in the BBC One series Penguins: Spy in the huddle.

Humboldt penguins breed in coastal South America where they hunt fish in the cold waters of the current also named after the German naturalist Friedrich Humboldt.

The production team were first drawn to the location by the abundant wildlife, particularly the penguins' survival struggles against a neighbouring colony of 20,000 predatory sea lions.

Although they witnessed vampire bats feeding on the sea lions, it took patience and specialist kit to witness them attacking penguin chicks.

Producer Matthew Gordon admitted that when they first began filming, they were sceptical that the bats fed on penguins.

"Although the local scientists had seen evidence of bite marks on the penguins' feet, no one could say confidently that it happens as they had never witnessed it before," he told BBC Nature.

In the dark caves that are home to the penguins, Mr Gordon, fellow producer Phillip Dalton and cameraman Jim Clare waited patiently in a hide using infrared equipment to monitor exactly what happened.

"As we scanned the colony using the infrared LED, the team observed the penguins reacting strangely to something on the ground, they nervously pecked and showed clear signs of agitation," he said.

"We then fixed our cameras onto one area and waited. Finally, after several hours the team noticed glimmers of light reflecting from the vampire's eyes as it darted around the penguins' feet."

After a further week of observations, Mr Clare was able to capture the bats' feeding behaviour.

"Due to the fact that the penguins are very alert and vigilant the bats seemed to wait until it was extremely dark with little or no moon and star light," explained Mr Gordon.

"Even then, they could not get to feed easily on the adult penguins who were more aware of them. So the bats had to resort to feeding on the less suspecting juvenile penguins."

Mr Gordon described the team as "ecstatic" when they finally got the shots in the last few weeks of a 165 day shoot at the location.

The documentary follows the lives of a variety of penguin species using some unusual filming techniques, including cameras disguised as boulders and even penguins themselves.

Penguins: Spy in the huddle continues on BBC One on Monday, 25th February at 2100 GMT.

First lady to press governors on veterans' jobs

(AP) ? First lady Michelle Obama will challenge governors to make it easier for military members to transfer their skills to civilian jobs.

Mrs. Obama wants states to pass legislation or take executive action allowing veterans to receive professional credentials or licenses based on their experiences in the military. Administration officials said that would allow veterans to apply for jobs more quickly rather than having to take courses for skills they already have.

Mrs. Obama will announce her proposals Monday during remarks to governors who are in Washington for their annual meeting. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will also address the governors during the event at the White House.

The veterans' initiatives are part of Mrs. Obama's "Joining Forces" program, which aims to help veterans and their families. The program has focused in particular on assisting military personnel find civilian jobs, an effort that is expected to take on more urgency as more than 60,000 U.S. troops return home from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

Mrs. Obama will ask states to focus in particular on making it easier for veterans to obtain credentials and licenses for commercial driving, nursing, and emergency medical services, administration officials said. The White House has outlined suggested legislative language states can use for implementing the changes.

Officials did not have an estimate for how much it would cost states to implement the credentialing programs. But they suggested the programs could eventually be a cost-saver by keeping veterans off unemployment.

Mrs. Obama has previously called on states to help military spouses transfer their state-specific credentials when their families move due to changes in deployment. Seventeen states have passed such legislation over the past year, joining 11 states that already had laws on the books.

The officials requested anonymity in order to speak ahead of Mrs. Obama's announcement.

Nigella Lawson speaks her mind, minds her curves

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? America might not know what to make of a celebrity chef as comfortable quoting philosophers as corraling reality cooking show contestants.

And Nigella Lawson is completely at ease with that.

"Today, it's all about marketing and people want to know where to place you," Lawson said during an interview Saturday at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival. "And I suppose I just don't care about that."

Lawson has carved a long culinary career by rejecting steroetypes and speaking her mind.

Most recently, she garnered attention for telling the producers of her latest television venture "The Taste" that they could not retouch images of her to reduce her belly.

It's not about vanity. It's about voice. And she wants hers heard ? or in the case of her curves, seen ? without layers of producers and editors and retouchers reinterpreting her message to viewers and readers.

"I don't need that to be mediated by any other person," she said. "To have your voice tampered with is a terrible thing. It has to be a genuine conversation with the reader."

That's why when Lawson writes cookbooks ? including her just released ode to Italian cooking, "Nigellissima" ? she sends them to the designer long before they go to her publisher. It's a way to preserve her vision for the book rather than have an editor decide how it should look.

It's also why she's comfortable dropping the names of British philosophers ? in this case Bertrand Russell ? in the introduction of her new book, the sort of high-faluten chatter that would end up chopped by most cookbook editors.

As for "The Taste" ? which Lawson shoots with fellow culinary free spirit Anthony Bourdain ? she has ideas for changing it a bit if there is a second season, including more cooking and eating by the teams who compete on the show.

"The producers probably don't want all my extra ideas, but I probably will give them the benefit of my ideas whether they want them or not," she said.

RE Mentions In Popular Culture - Vancouver Real Estate Anecdote ...

?Phil Moore was in the stands on October 9, 2008, and when Candice, joined by Roberto Luongo and Alex Burrows, presented the Bourdon family with Luc?s jersey, he came up with a plan.
When ? not if ? but when I win the Canucks For Kids Fund 50/50, I?ll give back.
?I just knew I was going to win sooner or later,? said Moore, a real estate agent and Canucks season ticket holder. ?I visualized it over and over again, winning and handing out this big cheque.
?If you?re in the shootout and you?re skating down the ice, you have to visualize your move and visualize scoring. If you visualize something over and over again, it just happens.?
And, wouldn?t you know it, it happened.?
?
?The last quarter of real estate was the toughest in 24 years, there were periods where we spent more than we made,? explained Moore. ?The majority of the winnings will go to pay bills, but it was a unanimous decision within the family that we didn?t want a vacation or anything, we?d rather give a chunk back to help out as much as possible.?

HTC settles with FTC over insecure implementation of Carrier IQ, HTC Logger

HTC Logo

HTC America has settled with the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) over concerns that the company put millions of customer's personal information at risk with insecure implementations of software on its devices. The FTC found that HTC did not take a reasonable amount of care in implementing best coding and security practices when creating software for its devices, having this to say:

"[HTC] failed to provide its engineering staff with adequate security training, failed to review or test the software on its mobile devices for potential security vulnerabilities, failed to follow well-known and commonly accepted secure coding practices, and failed to establish a process for receiving and addressing vulnerability reports from third parties."

Those are some pretty strong words for the company, but where it really hits home is the consumer-facing issues that were caused by this lack of oversight. The FTC explains that HTC's implementation of Carrier IQ and HTC Logger on its devices left customer data vulnerable to attack, alongside errors that would let third parties bypass Android's built-in permissions system.

The second part of the FTC's complaint is that it finds HTC was deceptive in telling consumers about the security risks of its software implementations, stating that the device user manuals and interface of the "Tell HTC" app were misleading. Both of these issues in implementation are said to have undermined the normal consent mechanism of Android that would have kept user's data safe.

So what does this mean for HTC? The FTC is requiring that the company develop and release software patches for its devices that are affected with these vulnerabilities, and HTC has said that it has already released some patches at this point. Furthermore, HTC will have to submit to "independent security assessments" every 2 years for the next 20 years. HTC will also be forbidden from making misleading statements about the security of its devices and user's data going forward.

This is a pretty big finding from the FTC, but isn't necessarily uncommon. Although their may not have been widespread exploits that were taking advantage of these security holes, it's important that HTC is going to be making changes to help security going forward. Though we would have preferred if HTC was implementing best practices in the first place, rather than it coming to an investigation by the FTC.

Generic iPhone 5 Accessories Disappoint - Business Insider

M. Woodruff/Business Insider

Generic iPhone Earpods vs. the real deal.

When I held my brand new iPhone 5 in an AT&T store back in December, I knew it was love at first sight.?

Then I forgot my charger at home for the first time.

The three perfectly good iPhone 4 chargers I had stashed in my desk were completely useless, and I went home with a dead phone for the first time ever.

The honeymoon phase was over.

Like the iPhone addict that I am, I knew I needed at least four backups in order to have a guaranteed source of power wherever I went.?

I couldn't stomach dropping another $80 on chargers so soon after blowing $300 on a new phone, which is why I was thrilled to see an incredible Cost Brothers/Via Google Offers deal in January.

For $17 + $5 shipping, I got what looked like a pair of iPhone 5 Earpods, a 10-ft Lightning cable, a car charger and a wall charger (valued at $106 dollars).

I was only interested in the Earpods and charger (I don't drive and my old wall chargers work just fine with the iPhone 5), but since both are worth $20 - $30 a piece, I figured it was still a good deal. I went for it.?

And I was deeply disappointed.?

When the package finally arrived a few weeks later, I immediately tried out the headphones. They looked almost identical to the real thing.?

But it didn't take long to realize these were no Earpods. Everything I listen to sounds as if I'm at one end of a tin can and the music is on the other end of the world. Other people I know who purchased the same deal were similarly disappointed.?

After the earbuds, I took a closer look at the wall charger. According to the label, it's made by a generic brand called "Happy China." The same plug sells for?a measly $1.52?on Amazon.com. ?There are no manufacturers labeled on the other items in the bundle, so I couldn't check.

Maybe all of the items in this kit would be valued at $106 if they were manufactured by Apple, but as far as I can tell, these are exactly the kind of generic knockoffs tech experts predicted would flood the market soon after the new phone was released. I've had $5 earbuds from Big Lots that sound better than what Cost Brothers is selling.

Earlier today, I called up Cost Brothers as a regular customer with a complaint. A representative answered after the third ring, was perfectly polite and even offered to send a replacement pair of earbuds to me straight away.?

But when I called again later and asked to speak with a press representative, they were less than helpful. The person I spoke with (someone named Oscar) told me they "never said the accessories were from Apple" and promptly hung up on me.?

The problem, however, isn't that the product isn't Apple-made. It's that they say it's valued at $106 when it's safe to say it's not. I reached out to a press rep for Google Offers, which is still running the same deal through April, and am waiting to hear back.

The takeaway: If you're looking for low-cost Apple accessories, just know what you're getting yourself into. Most of those amazing deals are simply knockoffs. I did get an extra charger out of the deal, and it works fine as far as I can tell, but I can't help but feel like I paid $22 for five items and got only one that's of any use. I might as well have shelled out the $30 for a new charger from an actual Apple store and saved on shipping.?

O.C. shootings: College student attacked randomly, police say

The rampage began just as the morning commute was getting underway.

Over the course of 75 terrifying minutes, a 20-year-old college student allegedly killed a woman at his Ladera Ranch home before embarking on a string of shootings that stretched through the heart of Orange County and targeted random people during their morning routines.

He carjacked a truck at a gas station, police said. He then allegedly executed a businessman and stole his BMW. A few minutes later, he killed a plumber and took a work truck. He shot indiscriminately at morning commuters on the 55 Freeway, hitting at least three cars.

PHOTOS: Shootings at multiple locations in O.C.

In the end, authorities say he killed three people and wounded three more before turning his gun on himself.

Authorities were stunned by what they described as the ?senseless violence,? which spanned about 25 miles of normally placid suburbia. The gunman, identified as Ali Syed, had no criminal record and left few clues as to his motive, police said.

?I just killed someone,? Syed told one man during the shooting spree, according to police. ?This is my last day.?

Police discovered the gunman?s first victim early Tuesday at a beige-and-white stucco condo in an upscale Ladera Ranch community. Syed, who was unemployed and enrolled in a single class at Saddleback College, lived there with his parents.

Neighbor Jason Glass said he heard three to five loud bangs early Tuesday morning.

He heard doors slamming. Then a car vroomed away from the house.

MAP: Orange County shootings

?I just thought somebody was being really loud and obnoxious,? he said.

Deputies arrived at the neighborhood of doctors and lawyers about 4:45 a.m., after Syed?s parents called 911.

Authorities found the body of a woman in her 20s who?d been shot multiple times. She was not related to Syed, authorities said. As of Tuesday evening, it remained unclear who she was and why she was at his home.

Meanwhile, Syed had taken off in the family?s black GMC Yukon, armed with at least one shotgun. Possibly in his haste to flee, police said, his SUV sustained some damage.

He exited the 5 Freeway at Red Hill Avenue in Tustin around 5 a.m. and pulled into a Denny?s parking lot. There, a man was sitting in an older-model blue Cadillac, waiting for his son. They?d planned to carpool to work.

Syed, police said, pointed his weapon at the man and yelled: Get out. The man sped away. Syed fired, shattering the Cadillac?s rear window and striking the man in the back of the head. The man fled -? he was later treated at a hospital -? and Syed dashed to a nearby Mobil station, authorities said. He spotted a man pumping gas.

?When they made eye contact, Syed started running toward the victim,? said Tustin Police Chief Scott Jordan. ?He said to him, ?I don?t want to hurt you. I just killed someone. Give me your keys. This is my last day.? ?

The man obliged.

Syed hopped into the man?s Dodge pickup and headed north on the 5 Freeway. After he merged onto the southbound 55 Freeway, authorities said, Syed screeched onto the shoulder, jumped out of the truck and opened fire on the cars whizzing by. He hit at least three.

Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said Syed may have realized that the pickup was low on fuel and was trying to steal a second vehicle.

Damita Cunningham was driving on the 55 Freeway about 5:20 a.m. Traffic suddenly halted. She put her car in reverse, thinking she could go around the accident, but a large vehicle backed into her Honda Accord and zipped away.

Cunningham followed the vehicle, which pulled off the freeway. Cunningham walked over to the driver, whom she described as ?sitting there with a blank stare.? He told her a man had pointed a gun at his window. He had been trying to flee.

?He was all shaken up,? Cunningham said.

In the meantime, Syed had returned to the pickup and exited the freeway at Edinger Avenue in Santa Ana. He rammed into another vehicle, slammed into a divider and abandoned the truck, authorities said. Then Syed approached a BMW waiting at a stop sign, his gun drawn.

Melvin L. Edwards, 69, was on his way to work at Rubicon Gear, a small family business that manufactures high-precision gears and shafts. Colleagues described the former U.S. Army combat infantry officer who served in Vietnam as easygoing, hardworking and generous with his employees.

Syed, authorities said, ordered Edwards out of the BMW and directed him to the curb. Edwards cooperated. But Syed allegedly fired three times anyway, killing Edwards.

Cunningham came across the crime scene before she returned to the freeway. She saw a man with a bloodied chest and brown boots.

?I'll never forget those brown boots,? she said.

The gunman was nowhere in sight.

Syed had sped away in the BMW to a Micro Center computer store in Tustin. About 5:40, workers at a nearby Fairfield Inn construction site heard gunfire.

Tom Van Schindel, a project superintendent, said a plumbing supervisor spotted one of his co-workers being chased through an overflow parking lot and drove over to help him. The supervisor was shot in the arm, police said.

Syed, authorities said, shot and killed the supervisor?s KBL Plumbing co-worker. Jeremy Lewis, 26, of Fullerton, had just arrived for his 6 a.m. shift.

?He has a good heart. He showed up every day, on time, ready to do his share of work,? said Craig Heising, another project superintendent. ?When I saw police pull the yellow tarp over him, I was just overwhelmed by the senselessness of it. It's a classic case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.?

Syed escaped in one of the site?s white work trucks. Just before 6 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers caught up with him on the northbound 55 freeway. He exited on Katella Avenue. Near the intersection of East Katella and North Wanda Road, Jordan said, Syed hopped out of the vehicle ?while it was still in motion.?

Syed raised his gun to his head and fired.

Around 7 a.m., Kenneth Caplin had made his way to his nearby office, where he had a clear view out his window. He surveyed the investigators at work and the white truck stranded at a curb. From under a yellow tarp, the shooter?s sneakers peeked out.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Sony wants you to know that the PlayStation 4 is coming this holiday season, but not what it will look like.

The Japanese electronics giant talked about its upcoming console for the first time Wednesday and showed what it can do, without actually revealing the device itself during the two-hour event. Presenters played games that were projected on screens in a converted opera house, but the PlayStations themselves were hidden backstage.

"I don't know that the box is going to be something that's going to have a dramatic impact on people's feelings about the game. It will be a color and a size fairly comparable to previous consoles," said Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, the U.S.-based arm of the PlayStation business.

"There's a big story to tell here, and it's going to take between now and the holiday season to get all the details out there," Tretton said in an interview.

Tretton said the price of the PS4 hasn't been decided yet, but hinted that it wouldn't be as high as the PlayStation 3 was initially. The PS3 debuted in 2006 with two models for $500 and $600. It now sells for about $300.

The PS4 will be jostling for attention this holiday season with Microsoft's successor to the Xbox. Details on that device are expected in June. Xbox 360 came out a year before PS3 and has been more popular, largely because of its robust online service, Xbox Live, which allows people to play games with others online. Having an event this early allows Sony to grab the spotlight for a few months, though the lack of an actual device was noted by many people on Twitter and elsewhere.

Sony did reveal that the insides of the PS4 will essentially be a "supercharged PC," much like an Xbox. That's a big departure from the old and idiosyncratic PlayStation design and should make it easier for developers to create games. Sony Corp. is using processing chips made by Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

"One of the big challenges we faced in the past was that we created great technology that we handed over to the development community, and they had to go through a learning curve before they could harness it. And when they did, we saw some phenomenal games," Tretton said. "We wanted to lower that barrier of entry and really give them the ability to create tremendous gaming experiences from Day One."

The adoption of PC chips also means that the new console won't be able to play games created for any of the three previous PlayStations, even though the PS4 will have a Blu-ray disc drive, just like the PS3. Instead, Sony said gamers will have to stream older games to the PS4 through the Internet.

Other new features revolve around social networking and remote access. With one button, you can broadcast video of your game play so friends can "look over your shoulder virtually," said David Perry, co-founder of the Sony-owned Internet game company Gaikai. With remote play, you can run a game on the PS4 to stream over the Internet to Sony's mobile gaming device, the PlayStation Vita, which debuted last year.

The goal is to make the PS4 so good at figuring out what games and other content you want that it can download it without being asked, so that it's available when you realize you do want it, Sony said.

"Our long-term vision is to reduce download times of digital titles to zero," said Mark Cerny, Sony's lead system architect on the PS4.

The PS4 is arriving amid declines in video game hardware, software and accessory sales. Research firm NPD Group said game sales fell 22 percent to $13.3 billion in 2012. With the launch of the PS4, Sony is looking to attract people who may have shifted their attention to games on Facebook, tablet computers and mobile phones.

Forrester analyst James McQuivey said Sony is missing the point by building what amounts to an upgraded PS3.

"Sony believes the future will be like the past and has built the game console to prove it," he said. "Tablets and smartphones now engage more people in more minutes of gaming than consoles will ever achieve."

Sony showed an updated controller that adds a touchpad and a "share" button. The controller also features a light bar, which means a new PlayStation camera can more easily track the device for motion control.

The bulk of Wednesday's event was devoted to demos of games for the PS4, including a realistic team racing simulator, "Drive Club," super-powered action sequel "Infamous: Second Son," artsy puzzler "The Witness" and several first-person shooter games, including "Killzone: Shadow Fall." Beyond games, the PS4 will let people create animation in 3-D using a Move motion controller ? all in real time.

Last fall, Nintendo launched the next generation of gaming consoles with the Wii U, which comes with a tablet-like controller called the GamePad. The controller allows two people playing the same game to have different experiences depending on whether they use the GamePad or a traditional Wii remote, which itself was revolutionary when it came out because of its motion-control features.

Judging by Wednesday's event, Sony seeks to improve but not revolutionize game play. The games were updates to existing ones, with improved graphics.

"At the end of the day, this is a device by gamers for gamers," Tretton said. "The games that people go out and spend billions of dollars on are your traditional shooters."

The original Wii has sold more units since its launch than both its rivals, but it has lost momentum in recent years as the novelty of its motion controller faded. Nintendo said it sold 3.1 million Wii Us by the end of 2012. It was a disappointing start for the first of a new generation of gaming systems.

In some ways, notably its ability to display high-definition games, the Wii U was just catching up to the PS3 and the Xbox 360, the preferred consoles to play popular games such as "Call of Duty."

All three console makers are trying to position their devices as entertainment hubs that can deliver movies, music and social networking as they try to stay relevant in the age of smartphones and tablets. The PlayStation online network will have access to Sony's video and music services, as well as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, with paid subscriptions to those services. People will also be able to access Facebook.

Death Valley: World's largest Dark Sky Park

Dan and Cindy Duriscoe

The night skies above the Racetrack area of Death Valley National Park.

By Andrea Thompson
LiveScience

Death Valley National Park ? famous for being the site of the hottest temperature ever recorded on Earth ? is being honored with a new superlative after being named a dark sky park, the largest in the world.

The International Dark-Sky Association announced the designation of Death Valley as a "Gold Tier" International Dark Sky Park Wednesday. That tier is the highest bestowed by the IDA and means that you can view night sky objects only visible in the darkest skies on the planet.

Death Valley is a 3.4-million-acre park located in California in the Mojave Desert, near the border with Nevada. It contains the lowest point in the United States, at 282 feet (86 meters) below sea level.

The park is far enough away from the light-polluted cities of the West that its views of the night sky are "near pristine," offering a glimpse of what could be seen before such cities were erected, according to an IDA statement. [6 Stellar Places for Skywatching in the US]

The often cloudless skies also make Death Valley an excellent stargazing spot. (The park averages less than 2 inches, or 5 centimeters, of rainfall a year, with some years seeing no rain at all, according to the park website.)

"Death Valley is a place to gaze in awe at the expanse of the Milky Way, follow a lunar eclipse, track a meteor shower, or simply reflect on your place in the universe," National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis said in the statement.

The park hosts regular astronomy events. The next will be its Mars Fest from March 1-3.

The distant lights of Las Vegas and other major cities do pose a potential threat to the park's skies and nocturnal wildlife, the statement said. Park staff, volunteers and astronomy clubs have urged local towns and private groups to use dark-sky friendly lighting, the IDA noted. The park itself is developing a plan to use light fixtures that direct light downward, instead of allowing it to spill out sideways or upward toward the sky, according to its website.

The hottest temperature ever recorded on Earth was made there at Furnace Creek Ranch in July 1913; it was a scorching 134 degrees Fahrenheit (57 degrees Celsius).

Other 'Gold'-level dark sky sites include a large portion of New Zealand's South Island, as well as Utah's Big Bend National Monument and Texas' Big Bend National Park.

Cox's Corner: It's Tournament Time For Winter Sports Teams

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - It?s championship week!

One of the busiest weeks of the season is well underway as the start of spring sports action overlaps with winter sports? championship week.

The quest for an ODAC title actually began Monday evening with the first round of the women?s conference tournament. Lynchburg, Shenandoah, Randolph-Macon and Washington and Lee picked up wins and advance to Thursday?s quarterfinal round at the Salem Civic Center.

Coach Jean Willi?s team will swing into action Thursday afternoon when the Eagles meet Lynchburg College at 3:00 p.m.

Bridgewater will be looking to snap its tournament losing streak as the team has lost in the quarterfinals three consecutive seasons.

The road to the men?s basketball title begins tonight with four first-round games at on-campus sites. The Eagles will host Roanoke and a win would send them to the quarterfinals where No. 2 seed Hampden-Sydney awaits.

The Eagles haven?t played at the Civic Center since the 2010 quarterfinals where they were eliminated by Eastern Mennonite, 87-67.

You have to go back to 2009 to find the Eagles? last victory in conference tournament play. Bridgewater defeated EMU in the quarterfinals, but was ousted in the semis, 77-67, by W&L.

?We?ve been going to Salem the last couple of years, but we?ve just been there for the banquet,? Eagles? head coach Don Burgess said. ?This year we want to be playing in Salem.?

The men?s and women?s indoor track champions will also be determined when the teams congregate Friday at Liberty University?s Tolsma Indoor Track Center. Action in the field events begins at noon while the track events are slated for a 3:00 p.m. start.

The Lynchburg men and Roanoke women appear to be heavy favorites to win the team trophies, but several Bridgewater athletes should be in the hunt for individual titles.

The Bridgewater women could excel in the jumps. Kristen Trice ranks first in the ODAC in the high jump. In the triple jump, Trice is again ranked No. 1 just ahead of teammate Melanie Waters. In the long jump, less than four inches separates the top four jumpers with Green Brown ranked third and Waters fourth.

For the men, Luke Sohl enters the meet with the top times in both the mile and 5000 meters. The men?s distance medley relay also ranks No. 1 in the conference after setting a new ODAC record in the event earlier this season. Freshman jumper Pete Monteleone should be a factor in the long jump where his best effort of 21 feet, 11 ? inches ranks second, just one-half inch behind Virginia Wesleyan?s Ethan Fowlkes.

The Bridgewater riders won?t be competing for ODAC hardware this weekend, but they will be vying for the program?s third consecutive IHSA regional title.

The Eagles are currently third in the standings, but the top four teams enter the final weekend with a legitimate shot of the winning the region.

Randolph College leads the points race with 210 points, just three ahead of Sweet Briar. The Eagles are two more back at 208 while the University of Virginia is fourth with 205.

The riders will head to Roanoke on Saturday for the Hollins IHSA Show and will wrap the season up on Sunday morning at the U.Va. IHSA Show.

Bridgewater junior rider Taylor Rose is also in the mix for the top individual honor ? the Cacchione Cup. The Cacchione Cup goes to the top open division rider in each region and each regional champion advances to complete for the national Cacchione Cup.

Entering the final weekend of competition, Rose is in third place with 57 points and trails the leader by just three points. Hollins? Emma Lane Poole tops the standings with 60 points and Sweet Briar?s Olivia Smith is second with 58.

While the winter season is wrapping up, the spring sports teams are chomping at the bit, hoping for some warm weather this weekend.

Saturday will be a historic day on campus as Bridgewater sends a men?s lacrosse team into action for the first time. The Eagles will play the first game in program history when they entertain Transylvania at 1:00 p.m. Transylvania, like the Eagles, is fielding a team for the first time.

The Bridgewater baseball team will also open its home season this weekend with a doubleheader Saturday against Messiah and a twinbill Sunday with Juniata. Weather has played havoc with the Eagles schedule, twice wiping out a road trip to Apprentice School. Bridgewater has not played since its season-opening loss at Ferrum on Feb. 12.

The Eagles softball team also swings into action this weekend and Coach Donnie Fulk?s team will be tested right away at the 3N2 Invitational in Atlanta.

The Eagles will plays two games against host Emory and Mississippi College during the weekend event. Emory was ranked No. 23 in the 2013 NFCA Division III Preseason Top 25 and is off to an 8-0 start. The Mississippi College Choctaws, like the Eagles, will be opening their season in Atlanta.

Lastly, the men?s and women?s tennis teams open conference play Saturday when they travel to Lynchburg to play Randolph College?

Green Blog: Could Wind Power Cool New England's Price Fever?

As I reported in Saturday?s paper, New England is experiencing a remarkable spike in electricity prices brought on by high heating demand and rising natural gas prices for electric generators.

What role, if any, could renewable energy play in solving this problem?

At the Union of Concerned Scientists, the senior energy analyst Michael B. Jacobs, who has a blog called the Energy Roller Coaster, has been sounding the alarm about over-reliance on natural gas in New England and Texas. The solution, he said, would be to turn to more renewable energy sources like wind so that the demand for gas would be smaller at clinch times.

?You don?t have nearly so much of a price spike if you have more renewables in your portfolio,?? he said.

Wind advocates made a similar argument when the price of natural gas was high about five years ago: that even if wind energy was expensive, it could have a major impact on the price of gas by cutting demand slightly. In the commodity markets, small shortages or surpluses can result in huge price swings.

Jim Gordon, who has been working for a decade to start up the project known as Cape Wind, said in an e-mail that the price spike ?highlights why offshore wind power can be an increasingly important component of the North East?s energy future.??

In a telephone interview, he added that offshore wind was particularly well suited to production when gas demand was at its peak.

?When it?s really cold outside, the wind is whipping across Nantucket Sound,? he said. A $2 million offshore solar-powered wind monitoring station has already demonstrated that, he said.

And that would in turn suppress demand for gas for home heating, he said.

The suppression phenomenon is related to the odd way that electricity is priced in competitive markets like New England. Companies that own the generators offer to supply electricity at a price that is usually based on the cost of production, and wholesale users like Northeast Utilities offer to buy it.

The buyers start with the cheapest power and work their way up. The last megawatt-hour that the buyers agree to take will be the most expensive, and that megawatt-hour sets the price for every megawatt-hour used, no matter what the bidding price was.

If more power is offered at a lower price, the last megawatt-hour accepted will be at a lower price, and all the producers will be paid less.

In New England, however, that implies the introduction of vast numbers of new wind machines because the weather there recently has not been very windy and each individual machine is producing at a small fraction of its capacity. A value of 10 percent has been typical in the last few days. (All of the region?s wind machines are onshore at the moment, though, and offshore wind might do better.)

To get a quick idea of how much wind is now on line, check out this Web page operated by ISO-New England, the grid operator.

The pie chart shows various sources of fuel, and a separate tab breaks down the renewables into wind, wood and refuse. If wind makes up one-third of the renewables total, and the renewables total is 10 percent of the complete electricity mix, then wind is providing about 3 percent of the total energy.

Bearing in mind that New England has about 700 megawatts of wind capacity installed in the six-state region, look at the total demand, in megawatts, on the same page, and match that up against the amount being produced by wind. It changes hour by hour, but it is generally a small fraction of what would be produced when the weather is more favorable to wind machines.

Of course, using wind to solve the problem would require either the capacity for massive energy storage or a transmission system that could bring in energy from distant regions that are experiencing different weather.

Healthy Cells 101 | iNform Health and Fitness Solutions

For those who have sat with an iNform Exercise Physiologist to assess or review your Bioelectrical Impedence Analysis (BIA), you may remember scratching your head at a couple of the measurements to do with your cells.

Clinically, measurement and prescription on Active Tissue Quality and Cellular Fluid Balance have proven significant in enhancing individual health. However my experience with some people is that the concepts can be a little hazy. So I hope to clarify a couple of things to do with cellular health.

The cellular readings that we derive from BIA are based on your body?s reactance to the electrical current that is administered. The ?charge? of your system is then analysed algorithmically to represent the structural quality and functionality of your cells.

It is important to be clear that this is not diagnostic, but rather indicative of cellular function.

CELL STRUCTURE:

Functional cells are encompassed by a fatty membrane with proteins lodged throughout. When we measure cellular quality, we are looking primarily at the integrity of the cell membrane.

The cell membrane?s honour, with right arm raised, is to Protect, Communicate and Regulate.

The cell membrane provides protection to the internal machinery of the cell and facilitates communication between cells. Cells come with varying degrees of nutrient requirements, depending on where they are located within your body. Cell membrane integrity is highly important in regulating the nutrients that enter and exit the cell.

Dietary fat has a direct effect on cell membrane structure.

When we eat foods containing fat, part of that fat becomes the membrane for our cells.? So when it comes to fat intake, it?s not all bad! However, consideration must be given to the type of fats that we consume.

Unsaturated fats, such as Omega 3, provide the correct shape for a functional cell membrane, and improve the communicative ability of a cell.

Saturated and trans fats have a different molecular shape, and function poorly as part of a membrane unit. Microscopic observations of these fats have noted that the membranes of which they formed were less able to communicate and respond to external signals, making the membrane appear brittle.

Good quality fat = good cellular structure

Protein is another macronutrient with multiple functions. The buzz around protein for the last few years has been it?s effect on satiety, muscle growth and repair.

But it also plays some pivotal roles around cellular communication and regulation, whereby proteins act as access gates across the fatty membrane.

Good quality protein = good cellular communication

So there you have it, the 101 on cells! There is plenty more that can be said on cellular function, but at it?s simplest level the message is this:

Good diet = healthy cells!

Cells are the foundation for all of our bodily and physical functions. If we overlook their maintenance in the pursuit of health and fitness, it?s a long road to success!

Google posts new Job Openings for Manila Office

When Google officially announced the opening of their Manila office, we saw a lot of buzz and thousands of people started looking for job opportunities with the company. Last week, they finally posted some job openings.

While the good news is that new positions are now available, the bad news is all of them are sales related that?s it?s all in just one department (Sales) and no other openings like in Search, Programming or Products (devices).

One new role was posted 3 days ago and labeled as Vendor Operations Lead (under Sales Operation) and they?re also looking for Vendor Operations Quality Manager (which is under Sales & Account Management).

Both roles require heavy sales background and a deep understanding of Google Adwords platform. This verifies our earlier story about what to expect from Google Philippines.

You can check out the full listings here.

Farmland zoning could cause cuts to costly crop subsidies - The ...

Home ? business ? Farmland zoning could lead to lower crop subsidies

Interview

Chularat Saengpassa,

Pongphon Sarnsamak

The Nation February 18, 2013 1:00 am

Agriculture Minister Yukol Limlaemthong believes the zoning, if implemented at full scale, will revolutionise the country's agricultural sector.

Noting that it is a complementary part of the Bt2.27-trillion logistics investment plan, Yukol emphasised that farmland zoning would be crucial for Thailand in the AEC era when free flows of agricultural goods would be activated.

"We need to implement farmland zoning now. Otherwise, when the Asean Economic Community materialises, Thai crops and related industries will be at a disadvantage," he said.

Under the plan, farmers will learn which zones are appropriate for which crops, boost their productivity, and bolster Thailand's competitiveness. Meanwhile, the logistics development will provide convenient material sourcing among industrialists.

Because of the approaching AEC, Thai farmers must prepare themselves well to compete against peers from nearby countries. Located in the same climatic region, most Asean nations can grow the same crops as Thailand, including rice and rubber trees.

Yukol said the farmland-zoning plan would seek to offer incentives to farmers who plant the right economic crops in the right zones. Guidelines prepared by the Agriculture Ministry have identified which zones are best for which of the country's six main economic crops.

"Definite-ly, they are free to choose the types of crops they want to grow on their land. But we plan to give incentives so that they choose the right ones for their own benefit and also for the country as a whole," Yukol said.

According to the ministry, each rai of appropriate paddy fields can deliver 700 kilograms of rice (or 4,375 kg per hectare). If farmers grow rice in inappropriate zones, yield could fall by half. This explains why Vietnam - which is taking Thailand's place as the world's largest rice exporter - has an average yield of 862kg per rai, against a Thai yield of 448kg.

At present, Thailand's rice-plantation area is 58.9 million rai (about 9.4 million hectares), but only 12.2 million rai is found to be the most appropriate for this crop. Moderately suitable paddy fields account for up to 37.6 million rai while 9 million rai is declared the least suitable.

Yukol said the ministry had issued an announcement on recommended farmland zoning related to the six main economic crops - rice, cassava, rubber, oil palm, sugar cane and corn. In the next step, the announcement will be circulated among provincial governors for further action.

"Through this, we seek to prevent the oversupply of agricultural produce," he said. "Eventually, this could also be used as a way to reduce agricultural subsidies."

Given that about 30 million workers - and voters - are in the agricultural sector, subsidies for farmers have been part of policies of all Thai governments, whichever party leads them. But according to Yukol, subsidies to farmers who grow crops on land declared least suitable for the crops could be cut.

Academics have also urged governments to divert subsidies to finance research and development on plantation techniques and tools, to boost farmers' income.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has previously lamented that Thailand's agricultural output has dropped. She vowed that her government would launch several measures such as farmland zoning in a bid to shore up farmers' productivity. Others include the plan for a single national map (from more than 20 used by different agencies) as well as the plan to improve efficiency of government land.

Yukol hopes the agricultural |sector will one day become so advanced that a watermelon could be traced to its original source, as Japan can do. If the farmland zoning is a success, the government hopes to apply the same concept to the fishery industry, he added.

He said his ministry would work closely with relevant agencies in implementing farmland zoning using budget for the 2014 fiscal year. The Meteorological Department will be able to help with climatic forecasts, while the Commerce Ministry can help with marketing.

Meteorological Department deputy director-general Somchai Baimuang said weather forecasting could be made for up to four months in advance, and that could help plan the farming season.

"We are ready to provide support. The Agriculture Ministry, meanwhile, has sought the budget to procure necessary devices," he said.

Pistorius' agent cancels all future races

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Oscar Pistorius' agent has canceled all future races the athlete was contracted to take part in and says his "key focus" is now defending himself against the murder charge.

Peet van Zyl says there is "no option" but to cancel Pistorius' track dates indefinitely "to allow Oscar to concentrate on the upcoming legal proceedings."

Pistorius was arrested and charged with the Valentine's Day murder of model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

He is being held at a police station in Pretoria, where agent Van Zyl visited him Sunday before announcing the double-amputee Olympian's track career is now on hold.

Van Zyl says Pistorius' sponsorships, including with big-name brands Nike and Oakley, are safe for now. He says "all parties are supportive and their contractual commitments are maintained."
