Record Drought Punishes Arkansas Agriculture | Asia Pacific ...

CENTRAL ARKANSAS???One of the worst hit drought zones in North America is Arkansas, as lack of rain threatens livestock as well as crops in closely all corner of the southern state.? Farmers are selling off cattle as well as desperately hoping as for a sustained period of rain to undo the damage that has been accomplished.

?

Arkansas still appear to bes really green. But the grass is short as well as there is not much method nice as for animal feed.

?

Even as temperatures soar from 40 degrees Celsius, big white clouds float in the sky.

?

Occasionally they produce a downpour.

?

A burst of rain is really welcome here, but experts say it is not decent.

?

Meteorologists say more than 38 centimeters of slow, steady rain would be needed in some areas to bring them up to normal.

?

Lack of grass has as forced cattle producers just like Karen Haralson to spend more over expensive feed, as well as she says a now rain has not assisted. ?It put just a little bit of green in the grass, but the whole it gave it was color, it did not?t provide it any growth,? she said.

?

She has had to reduce her herd from more than 250 to around 150, leaving her with too few cattle to operate effectively in the year to turned from. ?To run the farm, I am going to have to have more cows than I have, so when I go to replace them there will be limited replacement, so the price will be much method higher.? So it is sort of of a vicious circle,? she said.?

?

In close Atkins, farmers gather in the Atkins International Cafe at lunchtime as well as reveal their woes to waitress Cindy Johnson. ?The early crops that went in, they spent over the fertilizer as well as the whole, the yields were low.? There is no moisture to put anything back in over the second round, allthing is just dry as well as drought,? she said.?

?

In Faulkner County, Extension agent Hank Chaney says yields over all of row crops, just like soy beans, rice as well as corn, are going to be well beneath 50 percent this year except if rain turned froms not long to come. ?We need at in the least three or 4 days of nice, slow, steady rainfall.? It would be nice, of course, if we may turned a week of it, but at in the least that to assist us soak up as well as as for the ground to recharge,? he said.?

?

Chaney says around 30 percent of the farmers in his area have an edge over Mother Nature because they have ground water they may tap as for irrigation.

?

These centre-pit irrigation cognitive systems are expensive to buy as well as operate.

?

But Chris Schaefers, whose family owns 8 of them, says they turned their money back in more beneficial yields as well as more beneficial credit at the bank. ?It certain does create them feel more beneficial, when you go to your lending officer to acknowledge that you have irrigation behind you, regionicularly in years just like this,? he said.?

?

The Schaefers will advantage from the high commodity prices that are bound to result from this year?s dry conditions.

?

For farmers who may count over their own irrigation cognitive system, it will be a little easier to turned by this drought, but allone else is going to have to rely over Mother Nature.?

If You Are Hit By Two Atomic Bombs, Should You Have Kids?
Tsutomu Yamaguchi was late for work in August 1945, in Hiroshima, Japan, when he saw an airplane drop a silvery speck into the air. He survived the bombing only to make his way to Nagasaki three days later...just as that city was bombed, too.

UK to intervene on both sides of Syria conflict

It's a classic win/win war situation

The Foreign Office cited Assad?s strong trading links with the UK and his nice-looking British wife as the reason to stand by him, and the regime?s brutal repression and shelling of civilians as the moral case for backing the rebels.

Foreign Secretary William Hague said:??We also need cheap crude oil for multinational businesses who may deign to give us a tiny slice of their profits in tax, but at the same time UK voters are starting to notice the rampant destruction now the football?s over.

?People at home are watching reports and getting increasingly concerned the conflict may escalate to special ?war news? and spill over into other telly like TOWIE.

?So we?ve divvied things up, with the Assad regime getting the air support and the tracksuit-clad rebels getting the arms to shoot them down with.

?Fair?s fair.?

Prime Minister David Cameron said: ?This is the kind of diplomatic brilliance that my brand of compassionate conservatism brings to the international stage.

?Can any of us really say that we understand an Arab regime, with all those Sunnis and Shias and so on? What?s important is that we act decisively.

?As a gesture of support for the regime I ordered hummus with my lunch today, and as a gesture of support for the rebels I left it on the side of my plate. Or was that the other way around??

?

The Business Network SW hosts are there to assist in getting introductions and ensuring the most benefit is gained from the event.??Feel free to?view this time lapse video of the pre lunch informal networking.?- courtesy of Bitpod Ltd

Every person attending has a badge with their name, the business/organisation name and also a number for the table where they will sit for lunch. Those highlighted in green are?first time visitors to Business Network SW events.

Informal networking over drinks

Every person attending is given a copy of the table seating plan ? this is in Company Alphabetical order and shows
the decision makers attending and which table they will be seated for the lunch along with offers and?opportunities contributed by members.

12.30 lunch is called and at everyone then sits at the table ?who?s number is on their badge. There are table hosts at each table who will guide you through the next?part of the lunch.
During the lunch each decision maker at your table will have 3 minutes to explain to the others the?benefits that you and your organisation can offer; the type of business that you are looking for and?also how other businesses can help you. Be memorable so that other people will be able to?remember and refer. ?Lunch will be served during the presentations ? bread roll, followed by main course (special dietary requirements can be catered for), dessert and coffee. ?Wine is available during lunch.

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR 3 MINUTE PRESENTATION:

? Introduce yourself an your company/organisation
? Outline what you do ? the benefits that you bring to your customers/clients
? What?s new in your world? What?s novel? How will people remember you?
? What type of customers/clients are you looking to build relationships with?
? How could the people around the table help you or your customers/contacts? What are you?looking to purchase, what challenges do you have (also think about this from the perspective?of your clients)
? Can you refer the people around the table to others that you know?

?You can everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want? -?Zig Ziglar?

There will opportunity to ask further questions when everyone has completed their 3 minutes.
1.30 to 1.40 your opportunity to go and talk to someone else in the room (the seating plan will help?you locate them), continue your conversation or start a new one with someone else on your table.
1.40 Speaker ? An informative, enlightening and entertaining 10 minute talk given by a Business?Network SW member.

Latest technology being shown during a 10 minute speaker slot!

2.00pm Lunch finishes ? you can still continue to network with the others in the room, maybe set up a?follow up meeting, gather information from the literature table. A great time to make those?appointments and even continue your discussions in the venue?s facilities.

Some Top Tips

? Ensure that your company is only represented at the events by senior decision-makers;?people who hold the authority to both buy and sell; people who can effectively promote?your company and what it does; people who know the products and services that need
sourcing or re-sourcing that will improve your business.
? Ensure you come with Optitude ? an attitude to look for opportunities for yourself and for?others. Ask yourself, who is there in the room who is in a position to help my company or?perhaps my clients?
? Bring plenty of business cards ? you never know who might ask for one or even 2 ? so?that they can pass it on!
? Prepare your three minute presentation, focusing on the benefits or solutions your?company provides.
? Be there as soon as you can ? 10am for the seminar or 11.45am for pre-lunch drinks.
Seek out people you don?t know. Listen to them and be interested. See how they can?help your company and how you can help their business. Have a polite disengaging line if?in a group, or introduce an individual to someone who you feel may be of relevance, to
enable you to move on.
? Smile genuinely. Shake hands with everybody. Remember their first names ? they have?badges that will help you!
? Listen intently during each 3 minute presentation. Ask yourself during it:

? Can this person help my company?
? Can I help this company?
? Do I know anybody who could use this company?
? During the event refer to the full list of attendees and see if there is anybody else you wish?to meet on other tables.

? Once back at the office, get out and review the business cards from around the table, and?ask yourself:

? Who shall I write to and say how good it was to meet them?
? Who shall I ring and make an appointment to see?
? Who am I going to tell in my organisation about somebody I met today that could help him?or her?
? Who else on my contact list could benefit from an introduction to one of the people I met today?
? Always keep in mind the members of Business Network SW, & always be on the lookout?for any way in which you can pass on leads.

More advice from the from the experts ? updated regularly to assist you in getting more from your networking

Teardown suggests that the Nexus 7 tablet's guts cost $152

15 hrs.

A teardown of Google's?Nexus 7 ? along with?an analysis of its components and some guesswork ??revealed that the $199?device contains about $152 worth of parts.

This estimate comes to us via the researchers at IHS,?an organization that?provides insight and analysis on all sorts of topics. These folks took?an off-the-shelf Nexus 7? meaning that it's identical to one you?could buy ? and?took it apart, piece by tiny little piece.

They calculated that an 8GB version of the device has a bill of materials (BOM) of $151.75 and that a 16GB version has a BOM of $159.25. Once manufacturing expenses are estimated and added, this puts the final costs for the two models at $159.25 and $166.75, respectively.

There are other expenses ??such as?software, licensing, royalties and so on ??to consider, of course. So once it's all said and done,?Google will likely break even on the 8GB model and make a "modest profit" on the 16GB version, the folks at IHS say.

Higgs boson just may, possibly, more or less be proven to exist by ATLAS and CMS teams

Higgs boson just may, possibly, more or less be proven by ATLAS and CMS teams

We had a false alarm over the possible discovery of the theory-unifying Higgs boson last year, but a bit of poking and prodding in subsequent months may well have given us much more definitive evidence of the elusive particle. According to some rare rumors emerging from Nature, both CERN's ATLAS and CMS detectors have seen particle decay signals suggesting the existence of Higgs to within a 4.5 to 5 sigma level of proof -- in other words, very nearly concrete evidence. That's not quite the 5-plus needed to settle the matter, but it's to a much higher level of certainty than before. As if to add fuel to the fire, ScienceNews even located a briefly posted, CERN-made video (sadly, since pulled) saying bluntly that the CMS team had "observed a new particle."

Whether or not there's any substance is another matter. Nature hears that scientists are supposedly still working out what to say at an event on Wednesday, while CERN has made the slightly odd claim to ScienceNews that the yanked video is just one of several pre-recorded segments made to cover possible outcomes -- you know, in that "Dewey defeats Truman" sort of way. Unless the scientists have to go back to the drawing board, though, the focus from now on may be more on learning how Higgs behaves than its very existence. Any significant truth could see researchers proving the validity of the standard model of physics just as we're firing up our Independence Day barbecues.

Jack Mirkinson: 'The Newsroom' Recap: Episode 2

There appears to be an interesting critical split emerging around "The Newsroom." Reviewers -- including myself -- have mostly weighed in with negative assessments, while viewers have tended to praise the show much more fulsomely.

The split has seemed so wide, in fact, that I worried that I'd been too cynical and too hard on the show. But the second episode, "Newsnight 2.0," did not do much to bolster my hopes for "The Newsroom." To be clear: For a series with so many problems, both episodes have mostly held my interest throughout, and as with the pilot, there are frustrating glimpses of a better show lurking within the hour. It's too bad that show hasn't fully emerged yet.

"Newsnight 2.0" also happens to be MacKenzie McHale's name for her reboot of Will McAvoy's show. She unveils it on a whiteboard (she sends the board toppling to the floor. Metaphor alert!) in a meeting with the show's staff.

Will and MacKenzie argue about what should lead that day's show. Will, sensing a story that will run and run, wants to lead with more about the BP oil spill, which his team apparently broke all by itself last week. MacKenzie, integrity at a high, says that there's not enough news in it. She wants to lead with the then-red-hot controversy (we're in 2010, remember) over SB 1070, the Arizona immigration bill.

This is where we get a little taste of Will's rightward leanings. MacKenzie tells the staff that he supports 1070, and that, even though they may have thought him a closet liberal, he's actually a "closet moron." His retort consists entirely of saying "no one in this newsroom's job is being threatened by an undocumented worker."

A "hilarious" moment also ensues when MacKenzie reveals that, even though she's one of the most brilliant journalists of her day, she can't work email! In a little bit of comedy that might have seem outdated in 1995, she tries to send Will a private email, but winds up sending it to the whole staff instead. Whoops! Hopefully she didn't get this mixed up dodging Bin Laden in Pakistan.

This trope is all too familiar -- the hotshot woman is also a kooky klutz. Emily Mortimer is very endearing in the role, but she seems too sensible at her core to descend into screwball shenanigans.

We are led to believe that Jan Brewer, the governor of Arizona, is giving Will an exclusive interview to talk about 1070 because, as MacKenzie puts it, she knows she "won't have to out-shout a crazy person."

It's an odd concept; politicians will normally go just about anywhere to push their message, and why would arch-conservative Jan Brewer skip Fox News for Will, a man who is on record loudly trashing the current state of affairs in America? Unfortunately for Sorkin, he sets himself up for this kind of nitpicking by choosing to weave real events and people into his storylines.

Sorkin then immediately pits the only two black characters on the show -- producers named Gary and Kendra -- against each other. Gary dings Obama about the oil spill and Kendra snaps at him about it. Then Will, who has been showing off about how much he knows about his staff, says, "Gary's a smart black guy who's not afraid to criticize Obama." It's a real clanger of a line.

We then meet Reese (Chris Messina, decent in a thankless role), a numbers guy and friend of Will's who detests the new tone of the show. He meets with Charlie Skinner, Will's boss. Sam Waterston is still just about the most enjoyable part of the show so far. Charlie tells Reese that he has to stop sharing ratings information with Will, because he doesn't want anything interfering with the new format. "We're going to try doing the news and see what happens," he says. It's hard to convey how wearying it is to have Sorkin whomp this message over your head so many times. We get it! They're renegades, and Will is being torn between his ratings head and his hard news heart.

I'm choosing to mostly skip over the section where Maggie and Jim, the two producers, bicker about immigration, and her news skills. But of course, they are really bickering about each other and setting up the love triangle between the two of them and Don. She has to do the pre-interview with Brewer's people, and the look on her face when Jim, who just met her, finally tells her he approves of her talents made me queasy.

Next up, in what must have seemed a slightly sadistic move on Sorkin's part, Mortimer has to utter the words, "Sloan Sabbith, I'm MacKenzie McHale." The deliriousness of those tongue-twisting names is compounded by the fact that Olivia Munn is playing Sloan Sabbith, hottie economics anchor for the network, who is tapped for a nightly feature on the show. (Also she is a professor at Columbia!) Munn isn't helped by Sorkin's constant references to her looks.

We then find out that everyone thinks that the reason Will and MacKenzie split up years ago is because he cheated on her. Will's told her she can't talk about the real reason they split up, but she gets very agitated about the whole thing. Mortimer and Munn, against all odds, sell the scene, though there are some moments of real peril.

For instance: How could people think that about Will, MacKenzie whines, when he's "an extraordinary man with the heart the size of a Range Rover"? Where is this saintly fellow with the freakishly enlarged heart? The Will we've seen so far is mostly just a pill.

Back to Maggie and Jim! Must we? Yes, we must. Jan Brewer's pulled out of the interview because her press aide went out on a few dates with Maggie in college and is now trying to screw her over. I started noticing that John Gallagher often leaves his mouth open like a fish, and that Alison Pill is much too good for the material she's given -- like seemingly all the women on "The Newsroom," Maggie is smart but stammering, fierce but flighty -- and wow, this conversation is still going on?

"Please, tell me what to do," she finally asks, looking pleadingly up at him. Bad, bad, bad.

So basically they have 90 minutes to find a replacement for Jan Brewer. If you watch cable news long enough, you know that all the networks have a rotating cast of pundits who will show up at a moment's notice to blather on about any subject in the world. Sarah Palin and James Carville have studios set up in their homes for this very reason. But apparently all of AWM's gasbags are on strike or on holiday, because the only people the "Newsnight" bookers can find are a lunatic professor from an online college, a beauty pageant contestant and a gun nut.

Far be it from me to say that these types of people don't pop up all of the time on cable news, but it strains credulity to imagine that a program that prided itself on its intelligence wouldn't at least fall back on some of its network's predictable voices. It also turns what was the best part of the pilot -- namely, the news gathering -- into a drag on the episode.

Unsurprisingly, the whole thing is a total mess, and, for good measure, MacKenzie's idiocy with email rears its head again when she accidentally tells the entire company that she cheated on Will, not the other way around. There's a heated conversation, and then a gentler one, between the two, and we see glimmers of something better between these two very good actors shining through.

MacKenzie delivers another lecture to Will, who strayed by putting a stupid Sarah Palin bit in the night's show. "Be the leader, Will. Be the moral center of this show. Be the integrity," she says. It's maudlin, but at least she asserts her authority over the show's content in the scene, in a nice bit of forcefulness from Mortimer.

Will goes home, only to find that his doorman watched his show and thought it sucked. He then calls Neal and says he's going to anonymously help an undocumented immigrant who Neal brought up earlier in the show. It's supposed to be an example of his essential decency, I guess, but it is mostly just extremely icky. It also makes no sense. Wasn't Will supposed to be against undocumented workers? It would seem that it's hard to maintain your principles when your car-sized heart is revving its engines.

Super Guppy delivers space history to Seattle

John Brecher / msnbc.com

A crowd in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle watches NASA's Super Guppy aircraft approach Boeing Field, carrying a key piece of a space shuttle mockup that will go on display at Seattle's Museum of Flight.

By Alan Boyle

SEATTLE ? It may not be a real space shuttle, but it's ours.

Today NASA delivered a key piece of the mockup that astronauts used for space shuttle practice to the Museum of Flight in Seattle, my hometown. And it arrived aboard one of the most ungainly-looking airplanes ever built. The wingless mockup is known as the Full Fuselage Trainer, or FFT. The plane has a nickname that's more colorful: the Super Guppy.

The Super Guppy looks more like a Super Whale. The wide-body turboprop airplane has a cargo hold that's been built up into a bulbous shape, specifically to carry big stuff for outer space. Only five of the Guppies were ever produced, and they were used to cart spacecraft components around for the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab and shuttle programs. This Super Guppy is the only one of its kind still flying, and this week's odyssey with the most important piece of the Full Fuselage Trainer is one of the highest-profile flights the plane has ever taken.

For decades, the plywood-built FFT sat in a building at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. The crew compartment ??the part of the structure that was flown to Seattle today ? was outfitted with all the buttons, switches, cockpit displays and middeck lockers that the real shuttles had. None of those gadgets worked, but they helped the astronauts get familiar with the layout before they started handling the real controls. Astronauts could also practice how they'd get out of the shuttle in the event of a landing-strip emergency.

With the end of the space shuttle era, NASA's Johnson Space Center no longer needed the FFT, so the space agency decided to donate it for display. The Seattle museum made a play for one of the flown shuttles, and even built a shuttle-sized, 15,500-square-foot Space Gallery to display it in. But Seattle lost out to Florida, California, New York and the "other Washington" in the competition for Atlantis, Endeavour, Enterprise and Discovery. The Full Fuselage Trainer served as the consolation prize.

Most of the FFT's plywood parts could be shipped up by traditional means for later assembly, but the shuttle crew compartment had to be transported all in one piece. That's why NASA's Super Guppy was called into service.

The airplane has a 25-foot-high, 25-foot-wide, 111-foot-long cargo compartment ??big enough to hold the mockup's most awkward piece, even when it's bound up in shrink wrap and a protective steel frame. Over the past couple of days, the Super Guppy has been making a journey from its home at Ellington Air Force Base in Texas, over to California, and then up to Seattle at a top speed of around 200 knots. It wasn't exactly a record-setting pace ??but what the Super Guppy lacks in speed, it more than makes up for in the "What the Heck Is That?" department.

The Guppy flew over my hometown and its surroundings with a Seattle-born astronaut, Greg Johnson, at the controls. Then it floated down to a landing right in front of the museum, which is adjacent to Boeing Field. One of the commentators at the museum called it a "beautifully ugly airplane."

Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire pointed to the craft with pride as the sky spit down rain. "When we get together in Washington state, we can land the big whale right behind me," she said.

Museum of Flight

NASA's Super Guppy and a chase plane fly above the mostly cloudy skies of Seattle.

Museum of Flight

After its touchdown at Seattle's Boeing Field, the turboprop-powered Super Guppy taxis over to the Museum of Flight next door.

Museum of Flight

The entire front of the Super Guppy swings open to reveal the cargo inside.

Museum of Flight

The 65,000-pound Tunner 60K aircraft cargo loader and transporter rolls toward the Super Guppy.

Museum of Flight

The cargo compartment for the Full Fuselage Trainer, wrapped in protective plastic, has been taken out of the Super Guppy for a short ride on the Tunner transporter to its new home in the Museum of Flight's Charles Simonyi Space Gallery.

Several thousand onlookers watched as the Super Guppy's entire front opened up to the side like a four-story-high door.?

"It's really cool that it's actually able to fly," Allison Kirkman, a 10-year-old student at Spirit Ridge Elementary School in Bellevue, Wash., told me as she watched from the tarmac. "It's an amazing plane, and how they built it is cool, too."

The shrink-wrapped shuttle crew compartment was moved out of the wide-yawning Super Guppy onto a 65,000-pound mobile transporter, then rolled over to the museum's Charles Simonyi Space Gallery. Over the next couple of months, the shuttle mockup will be assembled in a place of honor, alongside a Russian Soyuz capsule and a prototype lander that was used in Blue Origin's spacecraft development program. Museumgoers like Kirkman will be able to walk through the shuttle mockup's cargo bay ??and they might even be able to crawl through the crew compartment, just like the astronauts did.

Kids, prepare to be amazed ... again.

Pessimism clouds start to Syria talks

GENEVA (Reuters) - International talks on a way to resolve the increasingly bloody conflict in Syria opened in Geneva on Saturday with foreign powers in dispute over the fate of President Bashar al-Assad.

Kofi Annan, the former U.N. chief who is special international envoy on Syria, has been hoping for consensus on a plan for a unity government that, by excluding from the leadership figures deemed too divisive, would effectively mean Assad stepping down.

However, Moscow, a long-time ally of the Syrian strongman and an opponent in principle of what it sees as foreign meddling in domestic sovereignty, has voiced objections to any solution imposed on Syria from outside.

The United States and its European and Arab allies see no way ahead while power remains in the hands of Assad. The U.N. estimates at least 10,000 people have been killed as Assad's forces have tried to suppress the uprising against him.

"It has always been our view that a stable future for Syria, a stable political process means Assad leaving power as part of an agreement on transitional process," British Foreign Minister William Hague said in Geneva.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said nothing to reporters at the talks.

He and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Russia met in St.Petersburg, Russia, on Friday night but a U.S. official said differences with Moscow over the conflict remained.

"Our Western partners want themselves to decide the outcome of the political process in Syria although it is the job for the Syrians," Lavrov's Deputy Gennady Gatilov said in Russia prior to the Geneva meeting.

Clinton offered no further insights as she arrived for the talks. But Britain's Hague made clear he expected a day of hard bargaining.

"There is an opportunity for the international community to be much stronger and act more robustly but we can only do it with the agreement of Russia and China," he said.

The foreign ministers of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council - Russia, the United States, China, France and Britain - were attending Saturday's talks.

Turkey, Kuwait, Qatar, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby are also taking part.

However, Iran, Syria's closest regional ally, and Saudi Arabia, a foe of both Damascus and Tehran and leading backer of the rebel forces opposing Assad, are not represented. Nor is anyone from the Syrian government or opposition.

WORSENING BLOODSHED

The Syrian conflict has gone from bad to worse since the uprising broke out 16 months ago, evolving from peaceful protests against the Assad family's four-decade dynastic rule to something akin to a civil war with a sectarian dimension.

Although the world has condemned the ferocity of Assad's forces' crackdown on the opposition - including bombardments of pro-opposition areas and mass arrests - it has been unable to halt violence which threatens to draw in more of the region's religious and political rivalries and alliances.

Annan, who brokered a much abused ceasefire in April, said on Friday he was "optimistic" that the Geneva talks would produce an acceptable outcome. Later, senior officials holding preparatory talks there failed to overcome differences. Western diplomats said Russia was pressing for changes to Annan's text.

"It is absolutely essential that the violence stops and that a political transition can begin. Kofi Annan made reasonable propositions and I hope that they will be upheld and that's the point of today's discussions," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, said as he arrived for the talks.

An Arab diplomat told Reuters on Friday night after a preliminary meeting ended in Geneva that the state of the plan was looking bad.

"If there is no agreement, Bashar al-Assad will know he had every possible opportunity to fly his planes and burn towns and the international community will do nothing," he said.

Russia, and China, both conscious of the risk of internal revolt at home, have objected to what they see as Western interference in the domestic affairs of rulers like Libya's Muammar Gaddafi.

Western governments, however, have shown little will to repeat last year's Libyan experience of military support for Arab rebels in Syria, where Assad's forces are formidable and the complexities of religion and ethnicity much greater.

On the ground in Syria, fighting continued on Friday, with particular tension around the northern border with Turkey, a week after Syria shot down a Turkish warplane.

Syrian helicopter gunships bombarded a strategic town in the north and tanks moved close to the commercial hub of Aleppo, rebels said. But Syrian troops kept well clear of new Turkish air defenses installed to curb Syrian action near its borders.
